Fernando Martinez vs Michael Taylor

Fernando Martinez (20) of the NY Mets had success in his time in AAA Buffalo this season, leading the IL in extra base hits in his time there.  Michael Taylor (23) of the Phillies has also seen tremendous success in his time in the minors this year.  Both will probably be ready to play in the majors next season, and both may be blocked by their clubs depending on what happens in the offseason.  Given the choice between the two, which prospect would you rather have?

I think there is more of a stigma about Martinez because he’s been a prospect for so long. Accusing a player of being older than he really is shouldn’t be done. There is nothing you personally have to prove him older than he is, is there? So why throw out the accusation?

obvious problem

the question is attached to many high profile Latin players, and rightfully so. On a yearly basis top Latino prospects are busted for lying about their ages and changing their identities. Martinez carries the question just as any of them do. IMO, I can see why, as he was 6’0", 185 pounds when he signed and looked like a fully developed man

by ScottAZ on Aug 20, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no chance Martinez is older than his listed age

Omar Minaya has known him since he was a child — he wouldn’t have signed him otherwise. The Mets are very cautious about this, which is why they prefer guys who are absolutely the age they are listed as — sons of big leaguers (Pena, Urbina) or kids fhtey’ve been tracking for a while.

I think with Martinez is

that he’s been in the minors for so long, that people tend to forget that he’s still really young, and has potential to be almost anything or anyone at this point. That said, the injury concerns are somewhat legitimate. All in all, though, I think Martinez’s age and production at AAA at his age make him the better prospect.

Martinez is 3 years younger, and put up a higher OPS at AAA in his time there then Taylor has. Is there really any debate on this one?

by adropofvenom on Aug 19, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

Yes

Normally I agree with you but, Taylor is athletically pretty special and is blooming only a bit late. Taylor seems to be able to stay healthy too, which is a plus. That should be an edge for Martinez, being younger, but it isn’t.

by casejud on Aug 20, 2009 3:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea...

Martinez is younger, has more potential, has proven more, and plays better defense. The only thing Taylor has on him is Martinez has trouble staying healthy.

by joegonzo on Aug 19, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

I went with Martinez

but looking at their stats I’d hardly agree that he’s proven more.

Then its a draw

cuz being healthy is really freakin important

Funny thing

The consensus in the comments so far is that its FMart and it isn’t that close. The poll results right now show 27 votes for FMart, 31 votes for Taylor. Will some of the Taylor votes explain their reasoning?

by Ophidian on Aug 19, 2009 10:58 PM EDT reply actions

not sure why people are so high on martinez

their AAA numbers are pretty even, but neither is a sample size worth anything and all of taylor’s other numbers have been just ridiculously good…eventually jesus martinez needs to announce that he has come again and maybe at that point I will be a believer, until then, he and jose tabata can go be young and use that as an excuse for the next five years

by IHateMitchMustain on Aug 20, 2009 4:52 AM EDT up reply actions

It's not like Fernando has ever been bad though

He’s been above average at every level he’s played in while being much younger than the competition. And this year he was certainly the best player you’d consider to be a prospect in the IL until his call up in June. The only thing holding him back is his injury history.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

Same with Tabata...

when they are both on the field, they are each very good and each top prospects. Their only problem is staying on the field. If either can put their injury problems behind them(they still have plenty of time) then they will be great players.

Michael Taylor

He can swing a bat, run to 1st, catch a ball, and sneeze without getting injured.

He is better than F-Mart.

by FanBall on Aug 20, 2009 12:29 AM EDT reply actions

Both very good players and its a close call

If I bought into FMart as a CFer I would probably vote him, but I went Taylor.

They both have a good set of tools, but I like Taylor’s approach, health and track record better so he gets a slight edge. Not convinced that Im not making a mistake though, as FMart probably has a higher ceiling. I wish I could wait another year before answering. I was never a huge FMart fan… he was always more tools than production and I get sick of hearing ARL for four years… but this year he’s impressed me.

Does Dom Brown also belong in this discussion? I think I like his tools best of the three.

by alskor on Aug 20, 2009 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

No

Domonic Brown is irrevevent to who is better between Taylor and Martinez- lol

prospect burnout

I think FMart has been around so long people almost expect him to be established in the majors by now, the fact that he isn’t causes the anti FMart sentiment. And I think the injury prone label is a bit premature, a young kid not physically mature trying to keep up with the wear and tear of a season isn’t always easy to do. I expect as he gets stronger and learns how to prepare himself better for the long seasons I expect the injuries to slow down.

I don’t think he’s going to be as good as he was hyped to be but he is still a better prospect than Taylor. Taylor is basically 4 years older than FMart, and while some are sick of it, in this case age makes a big difference. FMart put up a respectable line at Double A at the age Taylor was as a senior in HS. Taylor is a good prospect but his line as a 23 year old in AA is what I would expect from someone that age that is well thought of. Now that both are in the AAA/Majors territory I expect to Taylors numbers start to come down, like they did in AAA this year(I know sample size, but wait for a bigger sample and I’d bet you’ll see the same trend). FMart on the other hand I expect his numbers to keep improving, he should have stayed in AAA the whole year but the Mets aren’t the smartest organization out there. So I would expect Taylor to be the first one of the two to put up respectable numbers in the majors, but 3 years from now I don’t have any doubt Martinez is the better player.

by GoldenSpikes24 on Aug 20, 2009 8:59 AM EDT reply actions

Taylor, and it's not even close.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, FMart is by far the most overrated prospect in baseball history.

Dewey Finn = Dylan McKay, King Billy Royal = Zack Morris, RedSoxFaithful = Millhouse Van Houten, Paul Thomas = Steve Urkel, Galt = Screech Powers, Bravesin07 = Richard Stabone, Hero66 = Beavis, Slurve = Phoebe Buffay

by Dewey Finn on Aug 20, 2009 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

Ever heard of Homer Bailey or Delmon Young?

Even if he’s overrated, that statement is ridiculous. He was never the #1 prospect in all of baseball.

Delmon Young

this past week would beg to differ….

True, but for all the hype and expectations

he hasn’t been very good.

+1

Delmon was supposed to be a surefire superstar. Ranked #1 almost unanimously for a couple of years and he is barely replacement level right now.

by yoda1 on Aug 21, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

In baseball history?

Todd Van Poppel, off the top of my head, was far, far more overrated. Sean Burroughs, perhaps? Jeremy Hermida’s slugging under 400 this year, and pretty much everyone in the world called him a top 3 prospect. I think you might be overestimating how high anyone has ever ranked Martinez.

by aap212 on Aug 20, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

A draw

with a slight edge to Michael Taylor.

Fernando has far more projectability, and is also younger, but a much greater risk.

Michael Taylor may be less projectable IMO but he’s healthy and his approach is more polished.

by METSMETSMETS on Aug 21, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

That's the best explanation so far.

Taylor has a lower floor, with a greater chance of getting there. F! is risky, but overall, I personally prefer his upside.
