Around SBN: Preakness 2012: I'll Have Another Wins Again

Ruben Tejada v. Starlin Castro

While both are 19 and currently in AA , Castro is about 5 months younger and significantly less AA experience.  Tejada stands 5'11" and 165lbs while Castro is 6'1" and 160lbs.

Tejada 2009 AA  .290/.347/.372 with a.082 isop, 6.9%BB 10.9%K and 16/18 SB

Castro 2009 A+  .302/.340/.391 with a .089 isop, 4.9%BB 10.6%K and 22/33 SB
Castro 2009 AA  .200/.289/.225 with a .025 isop, 11.1%BB 0.0%K and 0/0 SB *very small sample

Who would you rather have in your system?  Which player has the higher upside? Lower floor? I'm not familiar with their defensive (li-)abilities so I'll let ya'll chime in with that.

For reference Wilmer Flores is 6'3" 165lbs and just turned 18 in low-A:
Flores 2009 A  .269/.306/.346 with a .077 isop, 4.1%BB 13.1%K and 2/4 SB

Wilmer Flores is not 6'3 165

He’s gotta be hitting 200 already if he’s rated at 20 speed.

I heard on another site

That scouts wonder if he broke his foot at an early age, apparently he runs funny (turns his foot in). This could explain the awful speed despite not being that big. He’s still pretty skinny, from what I’ve seen.

I'm a Mets fan so I'm biased

but I absolutely love what Tejada has done this year. He had no business in AA after his horrid year in the FSL last year, but he has far exceeded expectations. He supposed to be real nice with the glove, but his arm isn’t great. That’s fine so long as Jose Reyes comes back and is himself next year as Tejada would be great to have at second. His ceiling isn’t ridiculously high, maybe Luis Castillo in his prime (around 4 or 4.5 WAR at best) with a bit more pop and a bit less speed, but I think at worst he could be a nice back up infielder.

well, i am biased

fully acknowledging that, not directly because I’m a Cubs fan, but because as a result of being a Cubs fan, I know more about Castro than Tejeda.

I’m going with Castro. I think he has the higher upside. I’m not sure who has the lower floor, but Castro’s floor isn’t that bad. Castro has gotten rave reviews for his character/leadership in A+ from his coaches, comparing him to Jeter in some respects (no one is saying that he’ll be that good … just similar leadership/clubhouse skills at the same points in their career. The errors are disconcerting, but a lot of it seems to do with consistency. He’s young – he was in Arizona last year. We often focus on how a push impacts offensive ability, when it also impacts defensive ability. The field at Daytona, from what I understand, isn’t the best. The ability, by most accounts is there. Now, if he’s committing the same number of errors next year, then I’ll be worried. He’s a smart player who has a pretty solid swing. There is some expectation that power will eventually develop, as many think he’ll add a good amount of weight as he physically matures. He’s got solid speed as well.

Sounds very similar to Tejada

I really can’t say I would definitely rather have Tejada because I don’t know enough about Castro, but they sound similar. Both have good character, it sounds like Tejada has better defense, and Castro probably has more power ceiling.

Both are nice prospects, not great, probably B- level.

Tejada

He’s supposedly a high character guy. Works hard and all that intangible mumbo jumbo.

very high floor for him

I’d say the intangibles are a part of it — also an MLB caliber glove in the middle-infield, good K-zone judgment, the ability to put the ball in play and underrated speed. A lot of people throw around the Castillo comparison, but Tejada drives the ball a lot more than Castillo.

Agreed

Tejada’s got a lot of floor, upside is questionable. He can put the bat on the ball and play good defense, which is where the Castillo comp comes from, but Tejada’s got the glove for SS and at least a little bit more offensive upside. At worst he seems like he’ll be a useful reserve, at best, a valuable SS with a nice bat and nice glove, but not likely a star.

what happened to tejada's walk rate?

It was quite nice at the start of the year, April and may, but has plunged last month or 2. Small samples, but if he had kept the walk rate up with everything else, he’d be a little higher in my book, but as is I like what he has done this year.

Tejada

by a slight margin. Very slight. He’s a little bit more developed, but otherwise i don’t see much of a difference numbers-wise.

For Tejada

I see almost zero bust potential. Don’t know anything about Castro, but I’ll be shocked if Tejada doesn’t at least manage to be a solid utility infielder who starts for a couple years (barring injury).
