Aggregate Top 30 of all random users lists

There has been about 10 different top 25/50/100 whatever lists posted on this board in the past couple weeks. So here's the aggregate list. I removed the outliers - those players that were only listed twice or less (basically, most of Dewey's list).

I also removed those players who have played a meaningful number of major league games since a lot of people didn't list them at all (so gone are guys like Chacin, Weiters, etc.)   Of those in the majors, remaining are Tillman, Matusz, Escobar, Latos

Here's the list

  1. Jason Heyward
  2. Jesus Montero
  3. Michael Stanton
  4. Justin Smoak
  5. Buster Posey
  6. Chris Tillman
  7. Carlos Santana
  8. Brian Matusz
  9. Desmond Jennings
  10. Logan Morrison
  11. Madison Bumgarner
  12. Jenrry Mejia
  13. Pedro Alvarez
  14. Dominic Brown
  15. Fernando Martinez
  16. Christian Friedrich
  17. Mat Latos
  18. Wade Davis
  19. Matt LaPorta
  20. Alcides Escobar
  21. Hector Rondon
  22. Kyle Drabek
  23. Jarrod Parker
  24. Yonder Alonso
  25. Martin Perez
  26. Michael Taylor
  27. Chris Carter
  28. Thomas Neal
  29. Jaff Decker
  30. Nick Weglarz

i assume you summed up each player’s ranks from all the listed and compiled this list based on who had the lowest score

either way, pretty close to my own thinking

by gorilla_baller on Aug 12, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yes, just an average.

Ignoring those outliers.

nice guy

A couple of year’s behind me in high school and college. Then he went to work for the Motley Fool, for an old fraternity brother of mine. Doubt he’d remember me, but he’d remember my sister, who was in his class in high school. She said he was the kinda guy who would run up to you after grades came out and ask what you got. Of course that was 25 years ago. Liked Wisdom of Crowds and his stuff for New Yorker

Surprised

I thought Jordan Lyles would be higher given how high Friedrich is. Friedrich has been a bit better, but is much older.

Switch

Latos to where Bummy is and I’m good.

neal is overrated

i bet he wouldnt put up numbers like that in A ball even though hes in A+ ball

In case you hadn't seen in other threads

matthewmafa is an abject Dodgers homer, so Giants and Padres prospects are automatically deducted 65 Lasorda points.

Feliz?

He’s pitched only 4 MLB innings, so I assume he’s still eligible.

Is he really not in the top 30?

by txdave on Aug 12, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Like Chacin

Feliz was just excluded from various lists. I’ve already deleted the spreadsheet, but both of those guys were only on about half of the lists.

Both Chacin and Feliz would have been in the top 30

by Galt on Aug 12, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chacin hasn't pitched too much in the majors

I think he should still be considered. I like the idea though.

Mejia

Was he really ranked highly on everyones list? I thought I read through most of the lists, and I didn’t think I saw him ranked even as high as 12 on any of them.

by DJSlam on Aug 12, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wondering the same thing...

I’m pretty sure Mejia made 10 on Deweys, but I guess it’s because so many guys outside of the Top 10 have been ranked in such weird ways

How did Neal end up in the top 30?

All I did was average

While there were some players who were only on half the lists, I didn’t ding them for not being on the other half.

Feel free to do some quality control if you are so confident I’m either incompetent or lying.

Looking at the lists again, Mejia was 10th in Dewey’s list, 16th on DaveH’s, 13 on Fredericks, and 17 on Cwhitman’s. When I remove guys like Weiters, LaPorta, Gordon Beckham, etc, he moves down into the top 10-15 on the average.

by Galt on Aug 12, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Neal

Was only on 3 or 4 of the 8-10 lists, but when he was listed, it was in the 30 range.

by Galt on Aug 12, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Looks like Dewey's list was the major culprit for pushing Neal up

I honestly should have just ignored that entire entry.

by Galt on Aug 12, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The methodology for this is retarded, then

Some chode puts some scrub in the top 20 and everyone else ignore said scrub, and then said scrub ends up in the top 20, due to some idiot’s faggotry.

Brett Anderson is the Truth. Brett Anderson is divine presence. Brett Anderson is eternal life. Brett Anderson is within you. Brett Anderson is here. Brett Anderson is Now.

No

Simpleton. Read.

I excluded anyone that wasn’t mentioned at least twice.

You want to spend an hour pouring through all the random posts and come up with some statistically accurate method of weighting exclusions, then go right ahead.

by Galt on Aug 12, 2009 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

3/8 or 3/9 or 3/10

indicates that the prospect isn’t that well regarded, and should definitely be excluded.

Thomas fucking Neal. Wow.

Would rather critique others’ work for its faults rather than do their own.

I, for one, appreciate the effort Galt. Even if the methodology isn’t necessarily what I would have done.

You could just assigned inverse value for rank (30 points for #1, 29 for #2, etc), and then ranked by raw score, like how the MVP, Cy Young and ROY are calculated. That said, I appreciate the effort

When reading this list

I saw Yonder Alonso. Haven’t heard much of him this year. What has he done?

Did very well

in the FSL, struggling in AA…. Part of it is bad luck (He’s 14-for-53 on balls in play) but the power is lacking.

Surprise, surprise

Matt Eddy said in today’s chat that he’d rank Mejia 5th in the Mets system, behind (in order) FMart, Holt, Flores, and Niese. Obviously, he didn’t put much thought into it, as it was just an offhand chat question, but it gives some credence to the idea that the general community is overrating Mejia. I think we’re going to see much more conservative rankings for him from the “experts” than people here expect.

by RedSoxFaithful on Aug 14, 2009 5:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

To be honest, I think it's incredibly stupid to rate Mejia behind Holt.

Mejia should be ranked above Flores and Niese too. I’d still put F! above him, but it’s close.

I agree

I think he (Jenrry Mejia) is much better than Holt, and also Flores and Niese. F-mart is still really young, and still has a chance to be very good.

by St.Steve on Aug 14, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea

I noticed that as well. Some analysts just are not sold yet, due to lack of upper-level experience. Also the fact that he hasn’t pitched much recently.

I agree with you that people here tend to overrate him, and I am as guilty of it as anyone. When rating prospects I tend to value ultimate ceiling with very heavy weight. Will be interesting to see more AA starts, but right now I am inclined to rank him as the #1 Mets prospect and top 15 overall.

I forgot to mention that I also didn’t require that anyone be mentioned on multiple lists (just gave them 0 points if not listed)
