Martin Perez promoted to AA

Martin Perez, the Rangers 18 year old phenom, has just been promoted from Low A Hickory to their AA affiliate Frisco Roughriders. On the season Perez is sporting a 5-5 record with a sparkling 2.31 ERA in 93.2 IP with 105 strikeouts and only 33 walks.

Perez won't turn 19 until the start of next season. Look for him to be on a very strict innings/pitch count and either come out of the bullpen or start and only go 3 or 4 innings much like Neftali Feliz did last year.

I must get to Frisco

but it might be hard to know when he’s pitching if he’s in the pen.

I think he'll be like Feliz last year and stay as a starter

Just only pitch a couple innings each outting. His record won’t look good since he probably won’t pitch deep enough to qualify for wins but could get losses but I think they will keep him on a starters schedule.

If they do bring him out of the pen I think they will do it on a schedule not like a normal reliever. I doubt seriously we see Perez pitch on back to back days or even every other day.

I live here

I will definitely go if we can figure out when he’s pitching. Anyone know for sure?

I fail to see what the point of this (the promotion, not the fanpost) is

He’s clearly not pitching in the majors this season.

because its sexy.

I knew him at #15 was too low. damnit. should’ve had him at 8 or 9

by daveh33 on Aug 11, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Is that the only reason to promote someone?

He has dominated Low A hitters. The Rangers affiliate in High A is in the Cal League and the Rangers have shown a dislike for the place for their uber-prospects. Last year they did this same thing with Feliz and he didn’t seem to be fazed by it. Of course he was about 2 years older than Perez is at this time. This is all part of their long term plan I suppose. Get his feet wet in AA right now, go into next year ready to go and spend most if not all in AA. If the Rangers are in a playoff race like they are this year he could be a late season callup out of the pen if needed. More likely however is to get him ready for the start of the 2011 season when he will be the ripe old age of 20 and can step into the rotation at that time.

whoa dude

way too logical. Please try to be more sensational in your reasoning from now on. Ex. They are moving him here so he can jump straight to the majors next year like an A’s prospect would do.

Reasoning:

My guess, it’s a reward for a good season and a test to see if he can handle AA to start next year. If he fails and they don’t think he can handle it – I think the will send him to Hi-A for a while but if he is successful I’d guess he starts next season in Frisco.

James Simmons???

alright then
I was wondering if you could give me a quick rundown on this Cliff Pennington that’s playing SS now for Oaktown. I’m looking for what his chances are to be holding the job next year, his approach, if he’s just a slapper or if he’s looking to drive the ball some, and if you see him using his speed like he did in the minors now that he’s up with the A’s. Could he be Marco Scutaro with more speed? Any light you could shed on him would be greatly appreciated and I didn’t want to start a whole post for him.

by smoooooth on Aug 11, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Best upside comp for Cliff Pennington is "white Luis Castillo"

He might be as good as league average, but I’m not all that optimistic. He’s very much of a slap hitter. High walk rates in the minors, but they’re not likely to carry over to the majors, where pitchers will just pound the zone constantly without fear of him doing serious damage. I think a more realistic guess at his career would be Willie Bloomquist.

Basically, if he can hold it together at the plate and play solid shortstop defense, he won’t kill you out of the #8 or #9 spot in a batting order. But you can tell how much the A’s believe in him by the fact that they paid $700K to ink Dustin Coleman last season and drafted Grant Green with the first pick this season.

thanks

i saw the walks and the SB he had in the minors and was slightly encouraged that maybe he be a solid producer for a SS. I picked him up in my dynasty as part of my rotating Jose Reyes fill in, thanks Jose Reyes, he’s got to be better than Ty Wiggington as long as he’s getting AB’s. But looks as if I can leave him out of my long term plans.

Cool-- now I can play the "gotcha" game too! Boy, this is fun!

Try actually, you know, clicking through to that first quote. Or even just reading the second line, which ought to have made it instantly obvious that I was not talking about your boy.

The second one is at least actually about Martin Perez…

Oh, snap!

Perhaps I didn’t read through the whole conversation and you were referencing someone else in the first quote. Forgive me. I went back remembering the latter quote and just grabbed the former when I saw it while scanning.

But I like how you won’t admit you were wrong even a little.

That’s cute.

Abrasive in a befuddlingly vitriolic kind of way and never wrong!

No wonder you’re teh awesome.

I have utterly no sympathy for people who misquote others

Call it a legacy of my academic life, whatever. It really sets me off. Read what you’re fucking quoting next time.

[If anyone else is interested in knowing what he’s referencing and is not well versed in the search function, the exact quote is this:

Simmons has more upside than Perez does
because he’s a starting pitcher.

The Perez in question is Chris Perez, the Cardinals-turned-Indians relief prospect, not Martin.]

As for the rest, we’ve been over this before: I don’t think my statement was wrong. Perez really would be doing well to post similar numbers to Simmons in AA at age 21. That he’s made a lot of progress toward that this year, at age 18, is very creditable. Clearly he’s going to rank a lot higher now than he did last year (meanwhile Simmons’s horrible season has to have him ranking a lot lower). So the ranking was wrong, but I don’t think it was unjustifiable in a “taking Matt Bush with the first pick” kind of way. The two players were 3 spots apart on last year’s Community list.

I don't want your sympathy.

You’re a vitriolic douche who launches into attacks of others rather than enter into real discussions.

It is what it is.

I just find internet docuhes like you humorous is all.

Although I’m glad I could give you the wiggle room you so obviously felt like you needed to feel like you “won” this whole thing.

So, you win.

Good for you.

Well, fine

False, but fine.

I do care about the opinions of the actually intellectually honest people who might be reading this thread, though. Some of them may be interested to know that I did not, in fact, claim that James Simmons has a higher upside than Martin Perez.

Because he has absolutely nothing left to prove in low-A and they want to challenge him a bit over his last few starts?

He was pretty likely going to start next season in AA, or at the very least be on the fast track for a promotion there in the early Spring given his advanced skill set and how much Texas absolutely hates sending its stud prospects to the baseball purgatory that is Bakersfield (they’ve been trying to get out of that affiliate deal for years now- terrible, terrible situation there).

I fail to see how this doesn’t make sense.
