Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

WARNING **fantasy trade question**

Wouldn't normally do this, but I can't decided whether or not to do this deal.

DMB keeper league

I get:  Aaron Hill and Buster Posey

I give: Yovani Gallardo

I already have Cano at 2B so i don't really need Hill, but Salty hasn't really worked out behind the plate, so I could use Posey.

I love Gallardo, but I have the pitching depth to move him.

Is Gallardo's potential as to be an ace to much to give up or should I do it?

Hill and Posey

Not even that close imo. All pitchers, especially young pitchers, are risky and you get a top hitting 2B and will have a top hitting C in a year or two, both of which are hard to find.

But they're not top hitting position players

And he is an ace

I would say Hill is a top 5 2B

Posey has a chance to be great.

So do you trade an ace for a top 5 2B and a top 5 propspect? Both are at premium defensive positions. If I didn’t already have Cano at 2B I would have done this in a heartbeat.

Depends on how deep the league is

But I would do it, especially since you are out of it this year, so you have plenty of time to clear up your 2B situation, and you can afford to wait for Posey.

And I wouldn’t say Yovani is a fantasy ace. I would rank him about 20-25 among SP’s for fantasy. He is great for K’s, but still walks a ton and has high pitch counts.

Again, it depends on the league, but I would do it in a heartbeat, even with Cano.

re: I like Hill and all

but Yovanni is an Ace, and he kicks major stats butt in all the pitching cats. I made an interesting trade early in the season (Y. Gallardo, Chipper, O-Dog for Pierre, K-Rod, Blake)…and I kinda regretted it. I needed saves at that point and had a fairly deep rotation…but oh well.

I’d keep YG if I were you.

so who wins that deal? (my own :)

seeing how you gave up

a potential #1 starter, Hall of fame 3B and decent 2B for a closer, benched OF and ok 3B I’d say you pretty much got hosed.

Ignoring the biggest factor

This person has Cano on his roster. How many 2B’s can you use in this league? Are we really already giving up on Salty thinking Posey will be that much better? Salty is 24 years old – most catchers don’t hit stride until 26ish from things I have read.

This deal does nothing to improve his team if he only can start 1 2b each week. Hill has more hr’s and rbi’s but Cano has a higher average, more 2b’s and 3b’s, more runs scored, slightly higher OBP and comparable slg %.

In terms of Posey v. Salty – Suzuki is finding his way this year at age 26, Montero is hitting stride this year at 26, Napoli is 27 and broke through last year at ….26. Gotta give these catchers a chance. I think even Jorge Pasada was 26.

This is a good looking trade on paper in terms of value but not when you factor in the other components of this persons team.

if I did the trade

I wouldn’t keep both Hill and Cano. I would use them as trade bait and try to pick up a player I need, as well as get a possible catcher of the future.

Also, it is a sim league, not a basic fantasy league. So if I couldn’t move Hill or Cano, I could use one at DH or Platoon them at 2B.

In sim, take the hitters

honestly. I play a BBW league, and offense beats pitching in those leagues.
