Around SBN: Jon Jones Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Small Sample Size

The perils of small sample size: as I mentioned yesterday, Eric Hosmer didn't look very good for Burlington on Sunday, but on Monday he looked much better, pulling a Wily Peralta 92 MPH fastball for a home run to right field, and in general just showing a quicker bat. Don't judge a player on just one game!.

I will be doing a live chat this afternoon, starting at 1 pm CDT, at Amazin Avenue.

And as usual for Tuesdays, i'll be on theBlogTalkradio with Jeff Erickson at 11 am CDT.

Bat Speed

There are actually two categories of bat speed. One is ultimate bat speed — call it “native bat speed.” The other is the bat speed that a hitter can routinely bring to bear in a game, and it’s affected by the quality of the pitching and by the quality of the hitter’s pitch recognition.

You can judge the first by watching batting practice or by watching highlight video.

The other can only be determined by watching a player over a period of time.

How did Peralta look?

Certainly not his best line, but I’m very excited about him.

It was a great selection of awesome.

hmm

Needs a better third pitch if he wants to start. But has closer-quality stuff, yes.

Don't judge a player on one game?

Keith Law disagrees with this statement.

Dammit, you got it in before me

Actually, I think it's ok to formulate opinions based on one game

What Law does that bothers me is he doesn’t make it clear it’s a limited view AND he never seems willing to change that view. If you only see a guy once, you have to make it clear to your readers/listeners/viewers that it’s not all the information. And you have to be willing to admit that the one time you saw the guy might not be indicative of his actual ability. This, I think, is where Law usually fails.
