No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference.
-- Tommy Lasorda
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

What does a mama bear on the pill have in common with the World Series? No cubs.

Brackman
The wheels fell off a long time ago. Now we’re just waiting for the axles to quit throwing sparks on the freeway.

Goldstein had this today
The wheels have officially come off
Andrew Brackman, RHP, Yankees (Low-A Charleston)
Monday’s stats: 1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 2 K
Yes, he’s a 6-foot-10 righty with (at times) a great fastball who got a $3 million bonus, but he’s also a guy with no extended track record of success anywhere who missed all of 2008 recovering from Tommy John surgery. After the first two months of the season, which could only be described as neither good nor bad, Brackman has completely fallen apart of late, allowing 26 runs over 14 2/3 innings in his last five starts while walking 24. Something clearly is wrong here, and he just doesn’t have the kind of time many do to figure it out. More than anything else, he could enter next year as a 24-year-old (he’s six-months older than perennial prospect Phil Hughes), who has yet to solve Low-A. I received some flak for not putting him in my Top 100 going into the year and, at this point, he wouldn’t even sniff my Yankees’ Top 20 list.

Most helium rise...
For a prospect this season? Is a legit top 50 prospect now imo.

Not minors...
but Brett Anderson was the man tonight.
His 100th pitch was a 97 mph fastball and he was hitting 96 in the 9th inning.
Shutting out Boston is impressive.

That Boston lineup was terrible, though.
by rglass44 on Jul 7, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
really?
that’s a pathetic excuse. a 21-year-old lefty threw a two-hitter on the road, striking out nine, throwing sliders for strikes, and consistently 95-97 mph with his four seamer and that is your response?
by richieabernathy on Jul 7, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Chill dude
His comment:
Shutting out Boston is impressive.
My response:
That Boston lineup was terrible, though.
No doubt it was an impressive outing, and I was glad to watch it (as a Rays fan), but look at who the Sawx threw out there:
Ellsburry
Lugo
Youks
Ortiz
Bay
Tek
Baldelli
Green
Bates
That lineup is awful.

David Pinto called it their "B Lineup"
That’s 4 second stringers – including a rookie called up today. Lowell on the DL, His replacement Jeff Bailey is now following him there and Mark Kotsay bruised his leg a couple days ago. So Aaron Bates got the call. Pedroia was a late scratch with a family emergency.
Anderson is still an absolute stud and looked filthy… but I thought the lineup was an appropriate point to bring up.
by alskor on Jul 7, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That lineup is still better than half the lineups in baseball.
by PissedMick on Jul 7, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe if you factor in pitchers hitting.
Better AL Lineups:
TB
NYY
BAL
TOR
CHA
DET
LAA
TEX
OAK
That’s 9 AL lineups that are better.

insanity
Oakland’s lineup is better than that? In what alternate universe? Look at their roster and that roster’s number again, broseph.

Also, the White Sox...
have scored the fourth-fewest runs in the AL. Only three hitters in their lineup have an OBP over .333.
You clearly haven’t thought much about this.
by PissedMick on Jul 7, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Red Sox were starting 5 TERRIBLE HITTERS.
You can argue they were starting as many as 7 bad hitters.
by rglass44 on Jul 7, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
One of the dumbest things I've ever read
Bates is the only terrible hitter in that lineup.
Green isn’t very good, but he’s a solid role player and there are worse #8 hitters in the league.
Other than that the only player in the lineup that had an OBP under .340 was Ortiz.
by nyy601 on Jul 7, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
SSS
Baldelli isn’t good. Lugo isn’t good. Tek is cooked.
Either way that offense isn’t in top half even if you omit OAK
by rglass44 on Jul 8, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ugh.
Varitek: .243/.344/.482 – 7th highest OPS among catchers
Baldelli: .321/.397/.500 vs lefties this year, .299/.353/.494 career
Lugo: .352 OBP is 7th among shortstops, three points lower than last year’s
Those are the three guys YOU brought up. I’m bored of this.
by PissedMick on Jul 9, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Didn't someone just complain about SSS.
If you think Lugo, Tek, and Baldelli are good hitters at this point you’re mistaken.
by rglass44 on Jul 9, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Baldelli is a pretty good hitter who cant stay healthy enough to play every day.
Tek and Lugo are good hitters for their positions
by alskor on Jul 9, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And you're wrong.
Baldelli crushes lefties. Always has, and damn if he isn’t doing it again this year.
And if every team in the league has to field a catcher and a shortstop, and Tek and Lugo are above average hitters for their positions (if not overall), then how exactly are they hurting a lineup?
Stop, so I don’t have to do this again.
by PissedMick on Jul 9, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whatever dude.
That lineup is awful Bottom 5 in the AL. If you want to think Lugo and Tek are good hitters, think it, but this isn’t 2003. Nick Green is great too. That’s why he gets all the starts over the “above average” Lugo. Tek is such a great hitter nobody wanted to sign him.
The point of my original post was that THAT lineup was bad when someone said “pretty impressive against the Red Sox.”
by rglass44 on Jul 10, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right, they're terrible hitters.
Unless you, you know, look at the numbers.

Andruw Jones
such a great hitter nobody wanted to sign him…?
by alskor on Jul 10, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What?
If that lineup is considered awful, then what does that make this lineup:
Andrew McCutchen
Jack Wilson
Delwyn Young
Garrett Jones
Andy LaRoche
Steve Pearce
Robinzon Diaz
Ramon Vazquez
Virgil Vasquez

One thing:
Bay and Youks have seriously cooled of late and are slumping, so any gains from Ortiz hitting are undermined by that.
by rglass44 on Jul 7, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Bay and Youkilis each have thousands of at-bats of evidence that they’re very good hitters. A couple bad weeks in no way changes how good they are at the plate. A slumping elite bat is still an elite bat, and with random variance inherent in baseball, there’s absolutely no reason to believe that a great hitter going 0 for his previous 20 during a season where he’s putting up big numbers makes him any less likely to punish you in at-bat #21.
by slamcactus on Jul 7, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So how do you judge Bay and Ortiz?
I would say Bay is a very good bat, but not elite. Where do you rate Ortiz?

Someone to keep an eye on. The bonus baby is showing a decent all around game in the GCL. 2/4 with a 2B and 2 RBI today.

A dead ringer for his father appearance wise but not so much baseball wise. Only batting .266 this season.
Perhaps he can make it to the show as a bench/platoon guy…hitting .379 off lefties this season.

Cubs
Iowa beat New Orleans 1-0
Jose Ascanio 3.0 ip, 2 h, 4 bb, 3 k, 1 HBP. Not a prospect anymore, Ascanio has dominated AAA this year. Saw some time in the Cubs pen earlier.
Jeremy Papelbon 1.1 ip, 2 h, 1 k. Just bumped to AAAy. Last name may get him some general attention – being a lefty gives him some Cubs pen attention.
Vince Perkins W, 2.2 ip, 2 h, 1 bb. Former Blue Jays top prospect has had a solid year out of the pen.
Jeff Stevens, SV, 2.0 ip, 2K. Reports earlier in the year suggested that he was getting by off his fastball, as the other pitches were still a work in progress.
Tennessee got shellacked 8-1 by Carolina.
Marquez Smith 1/2, 1 h, 1 r, 2 bb, 1 K.
James Adduci 1/3, 1 RBI, 1 bb.
Both guys have been hot of late. That said, neither really are top prospects, but they are guys that could potentially fill roles if things go right for them (right situation, timing), Smith for his versatility and pop in his bat, and Adduci for his strong OF defense, enough speed, and disciplined plate approach.
Daytona lost to Dunedin, 4-3.
Tony Campana, 1/4, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 SB (26/32 on season). Blazing speed and a good baserunner, he could fill a role if he shows he has enough offense.
Starlin Castro, 3/5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI. What can you say – impressive year for the kid.
Jake Opitz, 2/5, K. I really am intrigued with his bat in a DeRosa-ish way.
Brandon Guyer, 4/5, 1 R, 1 RBI. Struggled at AA, although numbers suggested some bad luck. That said, you gotta perform, and he’s raking in High A now. Toolsy, and still young enough that the demotion shouldn’t hurt, but next year will be big.
Josh Vitters, 1/4, 1 K. We’ll see if he can adjust to the tougher pitching.
Marwin Gonzalez, 2/4, 1 RBI, 1 K. Toolsy kid has had the opportunity (AB’s).
Ryan Searle, 5 ip, 3 h, 1 r, 2 bb, 3 K’s, 1 HBP. Been struggling of late, so this start was a nice sign, imo.
by toonsterwu on Jul 7, 2009 9:50 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
sitting around at the dealership right now, so
Peoria beat Beloit, 7-2.
Ryan Flaherty, 1/4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB. I have no idea what to make of him. Periphs aren’t bad, but for a “polished” college bat, even in the tough MWL, .240/.312/.433 is eh, particularly since it was supported by a hot April. Defensively, supposed to be better than some thought.
Josh Harrison, 4/5, 2 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 K, SB. Now, this is what a college bat is supposed to be like in Low A. Still see a bit Mike Fontenot in him.
Rebel Ridling, 2/4, 2 RBI, 1 K.
DJ Fitzgerald, 2/4, 1 R, E.
Justin Bristow, 5 ip, 2 h, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K. 5th rounder last year, working his way back (forgot from what), he’s been fairly solid over his last 6 starts.
Boise beat Eugene, 5-4. 2009 Boise might not have the exciting names that 2008 had, but it’s an intriguing, albeit really raw, bunch.
Hak-ju Lee, 1/4, 1 2B, K. So far, so good for this raw, toolsy kid.
Logan Watkins, 2/3, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 BB. Former quality prep QB is still developing.
Brett Jackson, 2/4, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI. Wouldn’t read too much into his numbers this year.
Ja-Hoon Ha, 1/4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K. See Lee comment.
Robert Hernandez, 5 ip, 5 h, 2 r, 6 K’s, 1 HR. Couple years back, he was an exciting teenager succeeding in the MWL. PED suspension and injury later, he’s sort of slipped under the radar a bit, but he’s still only 20 with a good fastball/changeup combination.
Josh Lansford, W, 1.1 ip, 1 h, 1 bb, 1 K. Carney’s got 2 pitchers in the family now.
AZL Cubs lose to the AZL Giants, 5-3.
Burundi Davis, 2/3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K.
Cody Hams, 3 ip, 2 h, 1 bb, 2 K’s. Cubs have been active in the Asia and Australia. This Aussie didn’t pick up a baseball until signing, or something like that.
Sadly, DSL Cubs 1 and 2 were rained out
