Scott Hairston To A's for Italiano/Webb
Very surprising. Italiano was a high draft pick a few years ago with good velocity on his fastball. However he hasn't been healthy so he hasn't shown much. I don't know anything much about Webb, but this is very interesting. Could a Holliday trade be coming? Who knows? Hairston has looked great this year. What's next? Who's going to replace him? Anyone decent? Blanks in OF? A prospect called up?

And a PTBNL
Towers sounded excited about the player to be named in the deal. He said he’ll pick from two pitchers sometime this month to determine who it is. Towers said one pitcher has Major League service time. That player could end up the key to the deal.

A's fans believe it may be Sean Gallagher
But we’re hoping its Eveland or Casilla

I'm also dreaming the A's can pull off that Pennington for Pujols/Carpenter/Rasmus/$50 million trade

Still think this was a win for Oakland
Even if it is Gallagher, who I really like.
That said, a day later, I don’t think it’s that bad for San Diego. Getting 3 decent to above average arms for a 29 year older OF isn’t bad. I still don’t like the return, and I still don’t see why they couldn’t have waited and let the market play out. Seems clear that other teams were interested, and Hairston would’ve been one of the more intriguing names out there due to his low cost, controlled years, and performance.

I like Gallagher, or at least I did
Before Geren made him pitch through pain last season. He hasn’t been the same since.

Stop feeding my megalomania...
Bad personality! Bad! Down!
Anyway, not to steal my own thunder excessively, but there will be news on that front within, at the outside, a couple of weeks.

If you return, I might have to return
I had a whole “Why Bob Geren needs to be put on a rocket that’s fired into the sun, why Orlando Cabrera is my least-favorite baseball player ever, etc.” fanpost planned, but the Oakland GM thread here allowed that particular release. Don’t feel much need to post at AN now.
I’ve been lurking though. It makes me sad.

It better be Gallagher
Otherwise another head scratching trade for the Pads. Last good trade was the one with Texas when they got Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez for Otsuka.

Well, you know except for the other ones
I’m sure they really regret giving up both Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins for Heath Bell before last year.
And sitting here today, it’s pretty hard to argue with unloading Tony Clark for Evan Scribner last year.
And I’d probably still side with their haul in the Linebrink trade (especially if Garrison’s back in Portland for a start or two by the end of the year).

When are the Padres...
…going to compete for more than just a Div. title (best case scenario)? 2011? 2012? 13?
Hairston wouldn’t be a part of the next div. title winning team in SD even if he stayed… Italiano and Webb (even if they are relievers) have a chance to help that team – Gallagher (if it is Gallagher) likewise could help that team. This isn’t a bad trade…

I just don't see why they couldn't have waited
if it was Gallagher. I am big on Gallagher, but he’s hurt. Why not wait and see what he has, along with waiting to see if the market builds up?
That said, it isn’t a bad trade. One can imagine a scenario, if it is Gallagher, where the Padres have a rotation with Gallagher/Latos in 2010, with Webb/Italiano working the 7th/8th setting up for Heath (I guess that should be qualified with, whether or not Heath is there). Peavy’s probably will be gone by opening day next year to save them money. I gotta imagine that they’ll net a decent ready young arm there, giving them perhaps an intriguing young threesome to look at. The system and park should be able to provide 4th/5th starters. If Zawadski’s bat is real, sometime in 2010, they could have an intriguing infield of Gonzalez/Zawadski/Cabrera/Kouzmanoff (the May 15th stat that DePo pointed out was mildly intriguing), and maybe Chase Headley will finally put it together. They’ll struggle, but that could be a very intriguing young squad that could start building 2011 and 2012.

I think that's the idea
It’s a PTBNL, who may or may not be Sean Gallagher . . .they ARE waiting, because if they like what they see out of his arm they’ll take him, or if they don’t, they’ll take somebody else. James Simmons seems like a decent bet, a guy who should play all right in the NL and eat some innings, giving SD some definite value out of the trade.
What’s the deal with Ryan Webb? I remember he was a projection special, and while he’s always given up a lot of hits, he’s played in offense-heavy environments with very solid peripherals otherwise.
by mrkupe on Jul 7, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huh?
Ryan Webb has a career K/9 of 6.9. As peripherals go, that’s pretty damning… especially for someone who’s supposed to have plus stuff…

I wouldn't say damning.
I don’t believe he’s a candidate to be anything more than just a very average pitcher, but he doesn’t walk many and his home run rate hasn’t been bad at all for a guy playing in the environments that he’s had to endure over the last couple of years. Maybe he’ll be capable of eating a few innings in a major league pen over the next few years and saving the Padres some money. Maybe the Padres can unlock something here. As far as third guys in a trade go, he’s somewhat intriguing.
by mrkupe on Jul 7, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just find it very odd to have someone argue that peripherals are in Webb's favor
when I think of him as a classic case of peripherals that don’t measure up to his projection/potential/stuff. I always thought of him as kind of like the A’s version of Edwin Jackson…

gallagher isn't coming off the DL anytime soon
and given they have until the end of the month to pick the PTBNL, i’m wondering if that suggests it isn’t him. he hasn’t looked that good this year, and they won’t get a chance to see him until after their deadline to pick the player. might still be him (since he was a pretty good prospect previously), but maybe this suggests its eveland (who will get at least one start with the A’s, and a few more in sacramento) or somebody else, who they’ll actually get to see pitch this month.

Wondering if it might be De Los Santos
Can’t decide if I’d rather give up him or Gallagher. Probably Gallagher, really.

Speaking of FDLS
Saw this recently (6-30):
Another prospect, Fautino De Los Santos, has been throwing in the mid-90s following last year’s Tommy John surgery. He could be assigned to a minor-league club soon.
