Tyler Pastornicky
Tyler Pastornicky.
A quick note on a Blue Jay prospect to keep an eye on, 19 year old Tyler Pastornicky of the Low A Lansing Lugnuts. A 5th rounder out of a Florida HS in the 2007 draft. After somewhat of a rough start to the season in which he hit just .203 in the month of April, which if forgivable considering that he was playing baseball in cold weather for the first time in his life. Since April, Pastornicky has been a spark plug for the Luggies hitting in the 2 spot, getting on base and swiping all kinds of bases. he's been a model of consistency for an otherwise inconsistent Lansing Lugnuts squad.
Currently, Tyler is riding a nice 13 game hit streak, during which he has collected 18 hits in 44 ab's, and has struck out just once during the streak. Also, since April, he's stolen a total of 35 bases while being caught just 6 times.
Tyler also has a gun for an arm at shortstop, being clocked as high as 91 mph across the diamond, while playing a very steadily defensively. The only thing Tyler needs to work on is getting a bit strong so that he can add a few more extra base hits into the mix, as he only has 13 all season in 288 ab's, with no homers. But the way i see it, every stolen base after a walk or single is just the same as a double.
One final note on Tyler is his eye at the plate, which is well above average, as his BB/K ratio sits at a healthy 29 to 36. Lots to like about this guy.
(just for ships n' giggles) minus the month of april, this is his season line:
61 games, 68 for 227, .300, 8 doubles, 3 trips, 0 hr, 20 rbi, 22 walks, 28 k's, 35 sb, 6 cs.

True or False.
Pastornicky is a better prospect than Justin Jackson?
Not sure
It’s clear that Justin Jackson has serious contact issues but if Pastornicky is unable to develop any pop then Jackson could still be the superior prospect. I’d like to read some scouting reports on Pastornicky indicating whether he has a chance to hit for some power in the future or if he is very limited in that department. That said, I’m a very big Pastornicky fan and I’m curious to see what might happen next year with Justin Jackson struggling so mightily in High A and Pastornicky on schedule to graduate from Low A.
On another note, another Blue Jay prospect who is having a fantastic year is Moises Sierra. He’s drastically reduced his strikeouts (and also increased his walks some) and the result has been a very strong offensive performance thus far. His power is still developing but I’m optimistic on him. He’s also been heralded in the past as having one of the strongest arms in the minor leagues.
True.
Pastornicky is a better contact hitter and the plate discipline isn’t even close. He’s also faster and a better base runner. Jackson has better power and possibly slightly better defense but in the end Pastornicky is an above-average defender who is a leadoff hitter that will steal bases while Jackson, until proven otherwise, is John McDonald with more pop.

Arms
-I would say Eskstein’s arm topped out mid 80’s max whereas Pastonicky top’s 90.
Wheels
-Pastornicky with 66 sb’s in 128 pro games. Eckstein needed 203 games to reach 66.
Bat
-it’s hard to compare the 2 because Eckstein went to college while Pastornicky did not. Hard to not call it a draw.
Defence
-with Pastornicky having the superior speed (range), and arm, that definitely sways things his way at the short stop position.
I don’t really see the connection….
Pastornicky has better tools than Eckstein by far
it was a bad comparison. He is also rather refined for a HS player which is showing in his preformance this year versus Jackson’s.

Moises Sierra
“Blue Jay prospect who is having a fantastic year is Moises Sierra.”
Agreed. I was actually going to make a seperate thread about him at some point, but instead I’ll just point out that he went 1 for 3 tonight, with his 39th rbi, and drew his 21st walk. He also used his rocket arm to throw a runner out.at 3rd tonight. Ho hum for 20 year old Moises Sierra.
His last 7 games = 15 for 35, .429, 2 dubs, hr, 5 ribbies, 4 walks, 4 k’s, and a stolen base.
Markus Briskers has great potential
He hit a homer today for Auburn. He should have started there in the first place this year.
