I Actually Really Enjoy This List

My list didn’t contain players that are currently in the majors. But this is my take on yours.

I love your placing of Montero. He’s definitely put himself in top 2 consideration when the year ends.
Disagree with Tillman over Bumgarner, but maybe you like the improved secondary pitches and distance to the majors.
Lyles is looking good, but he’s in Low A ball. He’s maybe top 30 now, but move him up to high A with good results and I’ll let him surge. Same with Moore.
Thank you for placing the three Phillies top 30. They 100% deserve it and I can see each of them in the top 20 this year.
Feliz has totally underwhelmed me. As of now he looks a bit like Henry Rodriguez when he’s in the bullpen. Control problems with amazing velocity.
Freeman is easily underrated. I know you’re a Braves fan but below Blanks? No thanks.
McAllister over Latos? Disagree do to the lack of stuff. Although pitchers like McAllister might be ranked higher this year due to the success of “He who shall not be named”
Alderson is a pitcher I don’t like, but dominating at AA at his age deserves a top 20.
Villalona is 19. In A+ ball. And doing well. And has huge potential. He’s going to bust out next year for sure. Top 30 at least for me.
Finally, Marrero isn’t showing enough power for me. It’s kind of concerning the loss of power this year. I need to see a bit more of him before going top 50.

Feliz

Feliz in the bullpen: 4.2ip, 1bb, 4k.
Feliz in June/July: 27ip, 3bb, 20k.

Loved it too

+10 to montero, nice job there

The only thinks I didn’t like were McAllister on the list at all, Lyles about 30 spots to high, and Laporta 20 to low.

Otherwise by quick glace, job well done.

Weeks

Would haved liked to see Jemile Weeks sneak in somewhere, but I know it’s still early since he came back from injury.

Don't want to be an A's homer..

..but I think Cardenas, Carter and Weeks all have good shouts to make the top 50.

by DeJay on Jul 4, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

this was..

way better than I thought it would be…

However, Lyles and Kelly ahead of Feliz is a logic fail for about 3 different reasons.

as is is Marrero in the top 50 at all. I wouldnt love to hear his justification for that.

by jsmall404 on Jul 4, 2009 12:20 PM EDT reply actions

Reasons

Marrero still has a high ceiling and Feliz IMO is going to be a relief pitcher.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 4, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

...

just because you still have a high ceiling dosent mean you are a top 50 prospect. alot of guys have just as high of a ceiling and have played a lot better than marrero.

Morrison

Just because he got hurt doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be in the top 50. Why isn’t he in there. However I think your list for the most part was correct.

by mlefkee2 on Jul 4, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

If we are taking upside into account like Marrero, Morrison should def. be included and ahead of Marrero.

Flores

A lot of these lists have dropped Wilmer Flores because he hasn’t dominated the Sally league at 17, but I think you’re right in keeping him in there for holding his own.

I agree, somewhat

I think Flores is more in the mid forties. He has tremendous upside and a ridiculous fly ball rate. If that continues, he could be a big home run hitter when he fills out, but right now, he just hasn’t produced to warrant a 32 ranking.

No David Price?

Nice list overall. Most of my quibbles with it are relatively insignificant.

I imagine he considered him as graduated.

also better than expected

I like the aggressive rankings of Moore and Lyles, though they may be a bit more aggressive than I would do myself; but I’m curious why they have such helium, but Jason Knapp doesn’t make the top 50. It seems he’s tied to the same comet as Moore and Lyles: great ceiling, great performance, tons of ks. I would also slot Alcides Escobar in the 25-30 range.

Chris Carter I think is a top 30. And Jemile Weeks is wildly variable, from 25 to 75 (hard to get a read on him this early). I also like Weglarz as a top 40 guy.

I suppose I would boot McCallister, Saunders, Marrero, Norris, Flowers to make room for Escobar, Carter, Weeks, Knapp, Weglarz.

Felt the same way about Lyles

As for Weeks, I’m really excited about him, but think it’s too early to put him top 50. Hopefully he rakes all year and it’s not a question. (I’m not an A’s fan, but he could be a really exciting player.)

by aap212 on Jul 4, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

i'd put him

1 or 2. 2 for now, but in about 40 ABs for Wieters I put him at 1

oh and

14 innings for Hanson, so anywhere from 1-3 depending on when you’re putting him on the list

It's okay

I don’t think Lyles or Kelly have any business being this high . . .both of them have decent stuff, but I’m not sure either projects as more than a No. 3 pitcher at this point. The comparison between No. 17 Moore and No. 18 Kelly, for example, is not even close for me. I’d gladly take No. 30 Kyle Drabek and No. 41 Martin Perez over the Lyles/Kelly combo.

Alvarez isn’t this good. His raw talent is huge, but the contact problems have been an issue since college. He draws walks and his power is still elite, but those are his plus skills and there’s a not-inconsiderable number of minuses cropping up.

I could go on . . .but basically I think your ranking system is very skewed towards “what have you done for me lately” (not that this is uncommon for this site . . .), and more towards safety rather than upside with the exception of a few personal favorites (Flores?).

Oh, and if you think Neftali Feliz is a reliever, he’s not No. 21 on your list.
