July 31-August 2 MiLB Thread

Now that the July 31st trade deadline has come and gone, we can get back to discussing our favorite minor league prospects, their upside and their game performances.  There is a full slate of games this weekend and this seems like as good a place as any to discuss those games.

Like many of you, this daily thread is one of my favorite parts of this site.  With that in mind, let's get down to business...

quick question

I saw a note a couple of hours ago that Josh Reddick’s contract has been purchased by Boston . . .are they promoting him to the majors? If not, why did they do that now and not on September 1?

Quite ambitious…But, if this thread totally dominates, we’ll clear some room on the website for “July 31-August 2, Part II” ;)

Daniel Gutierrez

Daniel Gutierrez is slowly working his way back for Wilmington.

In his second appearance of the season, he came on in relief and went 2 IP, with a hit and two K’s.

Nothing too special…yet. Have high expectations for him.

Very nice to see....

Hasn’t had many XBH lately. Hopefully he starts to adjust to A ball hitting by the end of this year.

July 30th I think got skipped....but Dan Hudson yet again

6 IP , 10 K, 2 BB, 2 H

Better numbers at AA than A+, he is ready for AAA. I think this guy is flying under everyone’s radar (I’m not the first to say this as others have, just bringing it up again). This might also be the reason why the WhiSox felt okay trading a lot of their other top pitching prospects on 7/31 because they feel they got a future Ace in the hole.

Hot Sheet Report Chat

on Baseball America said he was still likely a bullpen arm.

Kyle (Lexington, KY): Dan Hudson’s been a lot better than I think most people thought he would be. What is his ceiling?

J.J. Cooper: I’d still say he’s more a back-side of the rotation or bullpen guy, but those guys are quite valuable.

really?

I know the fastball is supposedly low 90’s, but I thought he had good secondary offerings. I guess he is a bit maxed out frame wise, but there’s physical maturity relative to growing into your body. A bit surprised.

Thanks for the update. I’m prolly in the same thought as toonster in that I heard his FB was nothing too special but his other pitches were developing nicely. Should be interesting to see how the Sox handle him.

Jay Jackson/ Cubs

anyone have any idea why Jay Jackson was demoted to Hi-A and started thursday night? also Brett Jackson was promoted to Lo-A and went 2-6

Chris Withrow promoted to AA

I think he’s doing a lot better than anybody realizes, but his high ERA is masking things a bit (he’s had what seems to be extremely poor luck on BABIP and LOB%). A 20 year old with a 2.96 FIP and 105 Ks in 86 innings in the Cal League is very impressive though. The Dodgers have been limiting his innings this season, so his last few outings have been pretty short, and it will be interesting to see how he gets used in AA down the stretch.

The walks obviously need to come down, but for a guy with a 1st round pick pedigree, good FB velocity (I’ve read 92-94, touching 97), a good breaking ball, ARL in his favor, and gaudy strikeout numbers, Withrow’s performance has received very little attention. I personally think he is a top 100 prospect at this point.

Pedro Alvarez

3-4, 1K, 0 BB

Hitting .302/.352/.534/.886 with 8.5% BB% and a 24.5% K%.

BABIP is high but the ISOP is still strong and those BB/K numbers are definitely moving in the right direction. If he can hit close to this level the rest of the year and keep those trends with the BB/K numbers moving in the right direction, this was a very successful first pro season.

Promoted to AAA. Starting CF for the 2010 Rays (Upton to RF)?

by ProspectTube.com on Aug 1, 2009 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

Well....

What do you see them doing with Zobrist then? With Crawford entrenched in LF, and Upton in CF, I don’t know where else Zobrist would play next year besides RF with Bartlett at SS and a healthy Iwamura at 2B.

by DJSlam on Aug 1, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Iwamura might be an attractive trade option

$4.25M option for next year. Though he isnt under team control after that. Has a clause that he must be extended or granted free agency.

He’s also coming back off a pretty serious injury and is going to be 31 next year.

I would probably use Zobrist at 2B with Brignac as my backup plan. Option 2 is to split time between Zobrist and Iwamura at 2B and use Zobrist as a 2000 Mariners Mark Maclamore super sub type. Playing him all over at different spots and resting guys. I know fans hate that… but it can certainly be effective.

by alskor on Aug 1, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

fans don't hate that

Well, at least fans that have Ben Zobrist on their fantasy baseball team don’t.

by mrkupe on Aug 1, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Zobrist is too good to split time.

come on man.

Iwamura is not going to block his bat at 2B.

by daveh33 on Aug 1, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

his wOBA is .423 right now

behind Pujols, Mauer, Fielder, and utley.

does anyone honestly think Iwamura is going to keep him out of the lineup?

give Maddon more credit than that

by daveh33 on Aug 1, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

So… I think most people don’t consider this a new true talent level for Zobrist.

.340 BABIP and all. People are pointing to a power explosion… he slugged .505 last year with a .253 ISO. His ISO is .273 this year. He had an unlucky AVG last year and a lucky AVG this year.

He’s a very good player… not saying he’s not. They have a lot of very good players, though.

by alskor on Aug 1, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Iwamura has a team option, quite possible they decline it and put Zobrist there. I suppose they could put him at SS but I’m not sure he can handle the D. Besides 2B, I think RF would make the most since.

As far as Upton to RF, that is probably what they will do eventually but I don’t think it is going to happen next year. I’d be surprised if Jennings breaks camp with the team and impresses enough to move Upton off CF next year. I could see a callup midseason, some starts here and there but I don’t think he will be moving Upton till at least 2011.

Brett Marshall to have Tommy John surgery

It’s a bummer, he started going on a nice run for a while after a rough beginning, but then had a brutal June/July. With the exception of Chamberlain, the Yankees’ big bonus-money arms from the past few drafts have largely been a steady stream of injury disasters.

Carter continues crazy hot

.500 batting average in his last 10 games. 2 for 2 with an hr and a triple and a walk last night. When is he going to get called up to AAA?
