Aaron Poreda traded to San Diego

For Peavy? According to Heyman (who I don't believe a word he says) http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/mlb_trade_talk/posts/72805-padres-agree-to-deal-peavy-to-white-sox

But also http://twitter.com/FollowThePadres says 4 pitching prospects:

Clayton Richard
Aaron Poreda
Dexter Carter
Adam Russell

Now it's on MLB trade rumors http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/peavy-dealt-to-white-sox-again.html

And I can't even get to 75 words with all of those links.

Didn’t John already set-up a trade deadline discussion thread?

by fartballs on Jul 31, 2009 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

No, he didn't.

He set up a “trade rumors” thread. This is not a rumor. It’s a trade.

And clearly Jake Peavy is important enough to warrant his own thread.

Why didn’t you chastise knightgalt for his thread?

by Galt on Jul 31, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, I was thrown-off by the title “Trade Deadline Discussion Thread” in the hompage.

I have a feeling

Carter’s gonna be the best piece from this deal a few years from now.

Time for a better agent

Why, oh why would Chicago want to trade for Peavy given his injury? Well, you’d imagine the agent would say some thing about how Peavy is a “gamer” and “tough” and “be back to help the White Sox make the playoffs” and “still owned through 2013”.

You know, since the deal is already done, there’s no reason to say anything but positive, right?

Nope, here’s his David Axelrod’s response:

“Frankly I am flabbergasted that the White Sox would want to make this deal with him in his physical condition,”

by Galt on Jul 31, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions

Barry Axelrod

Small note, maybe nitpicking, but I’m pretty sure it’s Barry. I’m pretty sure he’s the agent, and the other guy is a White House advisor.

Very surprised that this one got revisited with so little fanfare

Getting 4 arms is a coup in its own right in this day and age, but none of these guys excite me. Maybe Carter. Poreda feels like a pen arm, and to be honest, I guess I’m not sure what to think on Richard. Think he’s better in the pen as well, but I guess he’s a usable back of the rotation guy.

by toonsterwu on Jul 31, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

I'm just not sold on Richard as a starter

Certainly, I like his power stuff as a pen arm, but eh, something doesn’t bite for me as a starter. A very good pen arm? Sure. Potential closer? Perhaps. I just dunno about him as a starter. But that’s me.

by toonsterwu on Jul 31, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Black will develop Poreda well.

He’ll at least be a damn good closer. But if he gets to where he should be imagine this rotation:

Latos
Poreda
Richard
Portillo
LeBlanc

Randy Wells. A product of the Roy Halladay School of Pitching, located in Toronto, Canada. Possible relocation.

by Cub Style on Jul 31, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Sean Gallagher's got to be in that mix as well.

and Gaudin has been a league average starter. I keep him around, even if its just to eat innings.

Whoops! Forgot about Seany!

Would be nice if we had him back hah.

Black's not going to teach him anything Cooper couldn't have.

Anyway, yeah, he’s got good heat. Might take him awhile, but he should be good.

by Daniel Berlyn on Aug 1, 2009 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions

When are you thinking that rotation would be in place?

I think next year’s has the following rotation candidates:

Young
Latos
Stauffer
Richard
Poreda
Correia
Gaudin (please no!)
Geer (please no even more!)
Ramos
LeBlanc

Further out I think the following are legitimate SP candidates:

Portillo
Bass
Pelzer
Kluber
Luebke
Castro
Hefner

odd that you don't have

Gallagher in there. I would think he’d be in the mix as a candidate.

by toonsterwu on Aug 1, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm likin Castro...

Giant, hard thrower, and a 9-65 BB-K ratio over his last 10 starts. I don’t know much else about it.

Also, don’t under estimate Carter, he’s a college arm whose always had good stuff, had a real bad final year in college, needed to iron out some things to get command of his stuff, which it seems major league instruction has helped him accomplish. The White Sox were bringing him along slow, not sure why he hasn’t been promoted yet, but given his age, experience, stuff, and now performance, I could see him be a fast riser for the Padres.

peavy projection

i think he will be an average starter in the AL, and plagued by nagging injuries the rest of his career. good guy though.

by son.of.sourman on Aug 1, 2009 4:18 AM EDT reply actions

when

do you guys expect Poreda to be called up?

by adesai on Aug 1, 2009 4:29 AM EDT reply actions

I assume they just want to stretch him out as a starter

He’s been pitching out of the White Sox bullpen for a while.

by thejd44 on Aug 1, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I am in an NL Only league and had Peavy, so I have the rights to 1 of the guys who came over

Who should I take?
Poreda or Richard?

If I take Poreda, I need to cut a minor leaguer and my weakest is Tim Alderson.
Scouting reports or opinions would be lovely.

by loop on Aug 1, 2009 9:55 AM EDT reply actions

without knowing the rest of your roster and what your

short term/long term needs are, and not being the best at fantasy (sort of stopped years ago … though I still sign up for an occasional yahoo league that i always forget about)

I’d go Poreda. I think Poreda’s got a better chance to be a better pen arm, and I’m not too enthused about either Poreda/Richard as starters. That said … I think my gut feeling would be to keep Alderson.

But others may feel differently.

by toonsterwu on Aug 1, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Richard

Because I think a decent starter is more valuable than a middle reliever. I think Richard can be a starter, and a decent one. At this point I think Poreda is a bullpen guy in the making.

by thejd44 on Aug 1, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I think long term

its equally likely Richard ends up in the pen and Poreda at the front of a rotation, actually.

by alskor on Aug 1, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i just don’t know enough about either pitcher thats all. I dont really ask fantasy help questions normally, but I figured this was the place to learn about those two pitchers

Padres rotation

think next year’s has the following rotation candidates: Updated

Young
Latos
Stauffer (#5 starter)
Richard
Poreda needs major work on secondary stuff and control (closer)
Correia (#5 starter)
Gaudin (please no!)
Geer (please no even more!)
Ramos (NO)
LeBlanc (Hell NO)

Further out I think the following are legitimate SP candidates:

Portillo (#1 OR #2 Pitcher)
Bass ( type # arm)
Pelzer (at wrost a type #3)
Kluber (NO)
Luebke (type #4 pitcher)
Castro (#1 OR #2 Pitcher if get his change better)
Hefner (type #4 pitcher)

Where do you see Gallagher?

It’s been mentioned earlier in this post, but this guy’s got sick potential when healthy and given a fair shot in the rotation. And he’s young.

And Gaudin is actually a quintessentially league average SP right now. That’s not bad at all.

by Blicks on Aug 1, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a hard time understanding how a guy who is acknowledged to have as good of stuff as Gaudin

has been cut from at least two (three? can’t remember how he got to Toronto) major league franchises. He has good sink on his fastball and an above-average to plus slider and decent changeup. His command sucks, but overall he’s an arm worthy of a spot in a major league rotation. And he’s really young for how long he’s been hanging around, too— this is only his age 26 season.

I think the key is his MLB walk rates

I think his good “stuff” is really just his slider. He puts extra guys on base, and probably gets into a lot of hitter’s counts, where he’s forced to go with his fastball (which according to Fangraph’s pitch values, has never really been that effective of a pitch). Pure speculation on my part of course.

Ok, fantasy question for the community

In my AL Only League you get the option to sign the players returning in a trade from the NL for your players. In a multiplayer trade we award first choice to the best player.

Who should get Peavy? The Aaron Poreda owner or the Clayton Richard owner?

by alskor on Aug 2, 2009 2:54 AM EDT reply actions

My vote

Poreda.

Higher rated prospect before the season by a wide margin. Higher ceiling.

One criteria we often use is which player the NL team most wanted. I would say Poreda. Im interested to hear people’s thoughts.

by alskor on Aug 2, 2009 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Ask DePo on his blog

He might answer with who they rated higher.

by jibs on Aug 2, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Ha

I was going to, but Im afraid to go too far here. We already gave him to Poreda’s owner (with a couple dissenters).
