Washburn traded to Tigers for French and Robles
Here's a Link
Jarrod Washburn traded to the Detroit Tigers for Luke French and Mauricio Robles (LHP, Lakeland). Seems like a pretty slim haul for the Mariners. If they are actually trying to contend this year, I'm not sure why they don't just hold on to Washburn and try to re-sign him for next year if this was his market value.

I doubt they would've resigned Washburn
That said, I agree that it seems like a pretty slim haul. There’s enough to be intrigued with in Robles to think he might be something, but it’s still not a great haul. I understand that Washburn being a rental didn’t help, but I thought they might’ve gotten a tad more with all the rumors flying around.
The M's have confused me the past couple days
The Wilson/Snell trade indicated a desire to go for it this year, but this trade makes me think they’re packing it in. They SHOULD pack it in, but not sure why the Wilson trade unless the want to keep him around for another couple years.
I don’t know much about the prospects, but I can’t imagine the Mariners would’ve offered Washburn arbitration (he’s Type B right now) so getting something for him is good.

Wilson-Snell trade makes a lot of sense
if you conceptualize it as Clement for Snell and a pile of poop for Wilson.
Plus, Z seems to be a big fan of defense. I definitely don’t read that as being a “win-now” move.

Sure, if they pick up Wilson's option then it makes more sense
I think both trades are good for Seattle in a vacuum. I just see them as sending opposite signals for this year, though the Snell/Wilson acquisitions aren’t this year only types of deals so I suppose even that first trade was made with an eye towards 2010.
Either way, I really like what Seattle is doing overall these days.

Not much of a difference
between Washburn and French
Washburn’s periphs: 5.7 k; 2.4 bb; 0.8 hr; 3.83 FIP
French’s periphs: 5.5 k; 3.2 bb; 0.58 hr; 3.87 FIP
I think they’re interchangeable, performance-wise. French is younger, a lot cheaper, and under control the next 6 years.
French's HR/FB rate is microscopic
That won’t last. His xFIP is 5.52.
I get what Z is trying to do here— outfield defense + fly ball pitchers— but French looks like a sub-mediocre prospect to me.

I should add, however, that Robles is good enough to make the trade work for me on his own
so whatever minimal value French adds is pure gain.

He's selling but also buying to fill potential holes in the future (something BB does pretty well too).
Smart guy.
