Sherrill to the Dodgers for two prospects
The dodgers have acquired reliever George Sherrill from the Orioles for prospects Josh Bell and Steven Johnson according to MLB sources. Here is the link: Dodgers Deal
Some sources are saying that Elbert is in the deal instead of Johnson, but it appears that it will indeed be Johnson What do you think of this deal? I think its pretty even....Bell is a nice prospect but Sherrill will play a key role in the bullpen for the Dodgers down the stretch.

and Steven Johnson continues to pitch better than anticipated.

Thats before the season
I wonder if he’s made any progress this year
Not Much
Maybe a B level prospect or two Cs.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Bell
I saw Bell play in the Cal league last year. He looks decent at the plate. He has an open stance and works the count well. He’s also a big guy and I could see him moving over to first and being a lot like Derek Lee the last few years: good on base and 25 homers.

Bell
He walks a good amount (13%) and his K’s are down (20%) this year at least. Hopefully a sign of some plate discipline. Could be a decent 3B if he sticks.
Love it for the O's ...
okay for the Dodgers. I understand the move for the Dodgers, but I would’ve rather seen them show a little patience on the pen side. There will be arms available in August, and Kuo is working his way back. Value wise, it works for them.
Love it for the O’s, though. Here’s the potential young 3rd baseman for them to build around. That could be a really sweet core in a year. It’s a good gamble for McPhail and Co. Now find some young middle infielders, and wait on the pitching.
to a certain extent
Tough break for the kid, as he has good lefty stuff, but the injuries are a question. That said, he’s back in the bigs now, and give him some time. He was dominant last year.
Again, not saying a bad deal for the Dodgers. I understand it, although it’s a pretty big chip to give up in Bell. I just would’ve waited until August, and let Kuo see how his arm holds up, but I can understand the move from the Dodgers perspective.
I love Kuo
I’m just a bit embittered by the constant injuries.
understandable
I guess the plus side of this deal is that more arms for Torre hopefully means he doesn’t wear as many out (I’m actually not sure how his pen usage has been with the Dodgers, just referencing his Yankees days).
On a whole random side note, I was half hoping that Chin-lung Hu was sent in the deal instead of Steve Johnson. As a guy partial to the Orioles (Cubs fan first, but grew up in the DC Metro area) and Taiwanese players, I think Hu can pick it enough to stick at short if their offensive core develops as expected. That said, local kid angle … and Andy loves picking up a pitcher in a deal.
I'm also partial to the Taiwanese players
Which is why Kuo annoys me doubly.
Torre continued to annihilate Scott Proctor in LA, I don’t really know other than that. I don’t think he’s really changed though.
great trade
for the Orioles. Josh Bell is going to mash against RHP. Hopefully he stays at third and plays with a bit more fire. The knock on him is that he is really nonchalant with his game.
Steve Johnson is incredibly polished, as he grew up around the game. He definitely knows how to pitch and a hometown kid for you guys. I’m rooting for him to make it!
Colletti, you continue to disappoint me.
Why so much hate for colletti
When he’s built one of the best young teams in the league? Am I just being naive?
I understand why
He’s made some haphazard moves, some “wtf” acquisitions. That said, I think he gets bashed a bit too much. He hasn’t really touched the young core that he was given when he joined. Early on, to me, it seemed like he was adding stopgap vets to buy time for his kids, and you could rationalize some of his bad moves (the Pierre one … no … ).
I don’t think he’s a great GM by any means, and I understand the complaints. Some bad contracts, a couple questionable trades, but I don’t think he’s as bad as his detractors suggest.
But that’s me.
What is "young" about that team...
that Ned Colletti has built?
Colleti
Is one of the best GMs in the league. I wish the Giants had kept him and let the dodgers take Sabean!!
wait
are you referencing my post or mets2k9? I said he didn’t move much of the young core he’s given … in guys like broxton, billingsley, kemp, ethier, martin and so forth. mets2k9 called it one of the best young teams in the league.
What did Colletti build?
He inherited Kemp, Loney, Martin, Billingsley, Kershaw, Broxton, and Kuo. He acquired Ethier, Manny, Furcal, Hudson, and Blake, but he has also signed Andruw Jones, Jason Schmidt, and Juan Pierre, while trading away Edwin Jackson and Carlos Santana. On balance, I’d say he’s done a poor job, and has been lucky to join an organization with Logan White on board.
+1
He’s done an okay job, Id say. He’s made some very poor moves, traded away a ton of value and signed some bad contracts. The Dodgers were set up pretty well prior to Colletti taking over. Im waiting for the wheels to fall off so I can mock him… but it hasnt happened yet. So I wont/cant say he’s been bad… but I absolutely refute that he’s a good GM.
again
i need to ask if you are actually referencing me. All I said was I don’t think he’s done a bad job, but I haven’t suggested that he’s built anything. I said he didn’t move much of the young core he was given.
To be fair on my 2 cents on one of those three signings, I didn’t think the Schmidt signing was a bad one at the time. Yes, the declining K rate was a concern, but it seemed like he would still be a solid innings eating 2/3 type starter. I also thought that Andruw wasn’t a bad gamble, but it was unnecessary.
He didn't build it
He was given a whole bunch of top prospects and supplemented them with a sequence of possibly the worst free agent signings in recent memory.

Its funny to me...
The Johnson toss in on this deal is just odd, as he wasn’t really regarded as much of a prospect (that Ive seen), and I wonder how much this was fan service as the Orioles face another second half implosion (adding the son of an incredibly popular former player for the second time in a month)
What are Bell and Johnson's prospect grades?
Is this fair?
Bell C+/B-
Johnson B-/C+
So one B- and one C+ for a pretty legit closer. I guess that is fair in todays market. But then Sherrill is under team control till 2011 right? So why would the Orioles trade him away?? Do they not expect to contend within the next 2 years? What is this a sell high strategy? I am confused.
cowboy probably has fair grades below
Bell’s probably a solid B. Maybe a B-, depending on who is grading. I’d probably give Johnson a C, but I could see C+.
For the O’s, this is a potential hot corner bag that has MLB capability. There wasn’t really much in their system at 3rd, and they got an excellent prospect in Bell. He’s a really nice block for them, assuming he pans out. It was good value, and the O’s can turn to other guys to close. Jim Johnson can probably be decent. Maybe Chris Ray finds his form again. It’s an excellent deal, imo.
Sickels thoughts from BTF’s 2009 Trade Deadline Extravaganza:
Dave Cameron: Speaking of the Dodgers, can I just say that I love Josh Bell? I think Baltimore did really well yesterday.
John Sickels: I agree Dave….I’ve never been really confident about Sherrill and they picked up two very nice Grade B prospects in exchange. Good job Orioles
more:
[Comment From Oriole Tragic]
Anyone – didn’t the O’s get a non-DeWitt 3B prospect in return for Sherrill? Does this guy step in as the O’s top prospect at 3B? Also, anything wrong with DeWitt…was it that the O’s didn’t want him, or LAD didn’t want to cough him up??
12:27
John Sickels: Bell is a very solid Grade B prospect.
12:27
Dave Cameron: Oriole – Josh Bell is better than Blake DeWitt. He has problems with lefties and might not stick at third, but the kid can really hit.
12:28
John Sickels: and Johnson is a pretty good pitching prospect, B- type. I think this is a good haul for Sherrill
Bell
Is probably a B/B-
A lot of mixed reports on him. People seem to either love him and his potential to be a legit middle of the order bat or just think of him as a solid hitter with above average power down the road.
I think the O’s got a B and C+ for Sherrill, which is solid.
ah well
I traded nick swisher/mat gamel for sherrill earlier this year and sherrill immediately did well for me. So this hurts me but I’m happy for the dodgers…

As an O's fan...
I am so pumped about the trade. Haven’t heard of either of these guys we got, but as I read about them they seem like they both have solid upside. Johnson’s numbers seem pretty good and people speak highly of Bell. And besides- Fat people are inherantly better at baseball than others, so I look forward to seeing Bell taking over Melvin Mora’s spot in a couple of years. 3rd base was a concern for the O’s and that trade just addressed it perfectly. And besides- Danyz Baes could close and do just a s good as Sherrill. Love Sherill and everything he did for us but I am totally pumped with what we got!
