Signs of Life

Good to see Guerra showing signs of life. The Twins do so well developing talent from the draft but seem to have whiffed in the Santana and Garza trades…although Delmon is still crazy young and showing some signs of life recently.

Flores
2-4 but no extra base hits

Is now hitting .285/.320/.365 which is OK but that SLG (and ISOP/LD rate) is so low. Still 17 and plenty of room to add power, I’d say he is starting to adjust to the level (which he is very young for), if that power comes watch out NL East.

Alvarez
1-3 with a 2B and 2 K

The AA experiment really hasn’t went well. He is still showing some power but a 3.3% BB% and 40% K% in his first 30 PAs is pretty ugly. BABIP is .143 and his LD% is up from 8% in A+ to 12% showing his batting line should look better but those peripherals are alarming.

by jfish26101 on Jul 4, 2009 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

Certainly possible with the Mets but I’m not sure it would be wise. I don’t think he will magically start hitting for power if let at his current level but I don’t see why the Mets constantly rush their prospects. It’s borderline irrational and harmful to their development but they know more than I about the subject. If he continues his current production (last few weeks) for a few more weeks, I could definitely see a promotion to end the year and further test him.

by jfish26101 on Jul 4, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Blocked

They already have Tejeda and Coranado at AA and I don’t see either one going to AAA.

And if one of them does, it is more likely that Havens goes up to AA and Flores goes to the FSL where he’ll probably fail to hit for power.

Mets don’t seem all that concerned with whether he hits for power though do they? F-Mart had similar problems just not as bad. Of course nobody expects Flores to stick at SS (unless the Mets brass see him as a MLB SS?) so he could always move to the OF or 3B?

What you say does make sense though and I think it would be better for Flores development. Thanks.

He’s already pitched as many innings this year as he did all of last year. They’re giving him long breaks in an attempt to prevent injury.

hmm

first thing with him is health. he has missed time in each of his first four pro seasons. this year is the first season he hasn’t missed any time, thankfully. he played some 2B last year but been exclusively at SS this year, which leads to be believe he can play there in the majors. and obviously there is a GLARING hole at SS with the major league team so they won’t hold him back. i see him finishing this year in AA and then going to the fall league, followed up by an invitation to big league camp next spring. then we’ll see after that.

he's baseball young

went to college on a football scholly as a WR. and i like that he’s advancing somewhat quickly. the age would be a tad more concerning if he was doing a year by year thing at each level. he’s going to be 24 next year and on the cusp of the Majors, which is more than fine.

what he did in Wilmington was pretty impressive for how much of a pitchers park that is. might see a power uptick now that he’s in a more hitter friendly park.

Niese & Niesen

Jon Niese CG 5H 10k shutout. 126 pitches. Mets really need to call this guy up at this point. He’s been pretty dominant for the last half dozen starts.

Also Eric Niesen with his second best AA outing, 5 IP, 1 R, 5H, 2 BB, 9 SO. A bit more under the radar, has struggled with walks a bit, but still a 10.7 SO/9 so far after 5 starts in AA. One of those guys who can look really good at times, but other times struggles with his command/mechanics, leaves the ball up some, and gets hit. I think he’ll more likely end up a good bullpen arm.
