Jeff Clement : Total erosion of strike zone judgement?

Jeff Clement

What happened to the K judgment?  Does this show he is pretty much a Triple-A slugger?

Star-divide

It's like he took his MLB strike zone judgment with him.  I've been fooled by this guy twice now in my fantasy leagues.  I'm done with him.  I even got tricked into getting excited when it was mentioned he was going to be traded today.

The Mariners

I don’t think there is anything wrong with Clement, just the team he plays for. the guy has nothing to prove at AAA yet he is just going to rot there because the M’s are stupid, and have mishandled him from day 1. I love Griffey, he’s my favorite player ever, but lets be honest between him and Sweeney in the DH spot they have stolen 400 ABs that should have went to Clement. He’s buried and if he doesn’t get out of the organization very soon he won’t have much of a career.

might as well post the deets here...

Ian Snell and Jack Wilson to Mariners in exchange for Jeff Clement,Ronny Cedeno, Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin, Nathan Adcock

not ideal...

A trade to to an NL team is better than rotting in Tacoma, but still….

I guess Clement is going to be spending his time at 1B now?

Or

Could it precursor a Doumit deal?

by Dfarth on Jul 29, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting, but

I thought it was generally agreed upon at this point that a) given his defensive acumen and b) given his Gary Carter knees, that Clement didn’t really have a future behind the dish. Do you think the Bucs would try him there?

Re:

Honestly, I think the most likely scenario is Clement at 1B and he will spell Doumit on his days off. Guess we will have to wait and see…

He's now a Pirate

Clement + 4 others for Jack Wilson and Ian Snell.

It's possible

that he will get flipped to the AL in a deal already set up.

250 PA

Dude’s had about 250 plate appearances in the major leagues. Think it’s a bit too early to give up on him.

Yep

Only 25, crushes Rs, hits for power and was jerked around by the M’s. Playing Griffey & Sweeney over Clement was dumb. Ian Snell is a nice return.

Question: Why do the M’s want Jack Wilson since he is a FA in 2 months? They’re 6.5 out of the WC behind Boston and behind TB. Or do they think they can re-sign him (I know they love the D).

by The Colonel on Jul 29, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

They plan on re-signing him

Couple of very good trades – getting rid of Bentacort who was awful, and pulling in a much better defender and average bat. Snell is obviously the prize moving to a strong pitchers park (not sure how well he’ll adjust to the AL though).

Suprised they didn’t go for Sanchez and move Lopez to SS. Didn’t he come up as one?

Lopez

Is stretched enough as it is playing second. No way he could handle the move to short.

Club Option

Cot’s shows Wilson with a $8.4MM club option for 2010. Rumor also is the Pirates are sending a large amount of cash Seattle’s way, which makes sense given how much the Mariners gave up to get both Snell and Wilson.

I love the trade for both teams

Not really sure why they sent Clement straight to AAA…he had been hitting pretty well as of late. Either way looks like they have a decent option at 1B now on days when Doumit catches.

by napes22 on Jul 29, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

I'm guessing they sent him to AAA to learn how to play 1B

He’s only played there a handful of times in the minors. He is not ready to be a first baseman right now, it would be foolish to put him out there on the big club. He can be a decent first baseman in the future but it’ll take a little time to learn a new position. Its a shame he didn’t go to an AL club where he could DH while he learns to field. His bat is as ready as it will ever be.
