Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

July 27th Minor League thread

These wonderful things have been tailing off a bit lately (none yesterday) and I missed it so I thought I'd do my part.

Here's some of the prospects and former prospects taking the mound today...

AAA: Tom Gorzellany (4-3 2.46), Matt Moloney (7-6, 2.51) vs Shairon Martis, Wade Davis (8-6, 3.22), and Esmil Rodgers (1-1, 6.23) - who BA recently put in thier recent top 50 and I had not heard of. Any body seen this kid?

AA: Brian Matusz (6-0, 1.88), Kyle Drabek (6-1, 3.12) - we'll watch and see if he's pulled early, Tyson Ross - A's 2008 2nd rounder makes debut in TL, Lance Lynn (9-3, 3.22) - Cards big 6-5 250 Righty is very underated IMO.

A+: Mark Rogers vs David Bromberg (8-1, 2.86) is an interesting matchup,

A: Dexter Carter (6-2, 3.16) 136 K's i n 111 IP,

Also one notable game has been played already - future stars Mike Stanton, and Logan Morrison homered in the first for all the runs the Jacksonville Suns needed (and all they got) in a 4-3 win over Birmingham. Stanton's was a majesctic, 3-run bomb and Logan followed to make it back-to-back.

Enjoy watching and posting!

Derek Norris...

With yet another HR. One of the best catching prospects in the minors IMO.

by soccerman0 on Jul 27, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions

Quick

Between Derek Norris and Jesus Montero, who has more walks, more extra base hits, more HR, and a better chance to stay behind the plate? Granted Montero’s ARL makes him a better prospect at this point, but Norris is definitely one of the better catching prospects around.

by Dfarth on Jul 27, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The only catching prospects that I think are better:

Jesus Montero (and as you said, he probably wont stick there)
Carlos Santana
Buster Posey

I think Norris is a top 50 prospect at this point. I wonder why he hasn’t been called up to Potomac yet. Speaking of Potomac, Danny Espinosa is another guy that I think is drastically overrated. Speed and Power at the SS position (not to mention a plus glove)….gotta love that.

Underrated I think you mean.

Dfarth, to answer your series of questions. In my opinion...

More Walks – Montero by a hair
More Extra Base Hits – Montero
More HR – Norris by a hair
Better Chance to Stick – Norris, but I don’t think he sticks either

others:
better AVG – Montero
higher floor – Montero
higher ceiling – Montero
more K’s – Norris

Are those projections?

I was asking who has those things right now…which is Norris for all the things I asked. I still think that Montero is a better prospect…

buster posey

0/0 with 4 walks yesterday. DID I READ THAT RIGHT?

in all seriousness he’s off to a slow start in AAA but it’s a big adjustment and I think he will do well eventually

by son.of.sourman on Jul 27, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Posey...

is doing just fine in AAA.

7BB 5K and 3 doubles in 34 AB show he’s managing the strike zone very well, and hitting the ball hard. Don’t let a low batting average after nine games influence you.

by PissedMick on Jul 27, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

BB/K

. . .but 4 of those 7 walks came in one game. So before last night’s game, did you find his 3/5 BB/K ratio in 34 ABs to be evidence of managing the strike zone very well, or did you just get sucked in by small sample size?

by mrkupe on Jul 28, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

and 3 of those K's came in one game

So REALLY he’s had a 3/2 BB/K. See what I did there?

by superk1ng on Jul 28, 2009 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

his issues right now are all BABIP related

He’s working good counts and swinging at good pitches but hasn’t gotten hits so far. He’ll be okay.

Juan Duran

0/3 with 1 BB today in the rookie gulf coast league.

.193/.260/.307/.567

but still 17 and raw so it’s much much to early to write him off, i think/hope. do you guys like him?

by son.of.sourman on Jul 27, 2009 8:40 PM EDT reply actions

Two

Carlos Santana just hit his 4th home run in 4 games.
Ryan Kalish just took Kyle Drabek deep. He’s had a great July after a rough transition to Double-A. Without an otherworldly August his season line in AA may keep him out of the top-100 overall, but he’d definitely be on my personal list.

I like them about equally.

But I can see why people would prefer Brown. I’m not sure you can really go wrong either of them.

As far as physical specimen go I’ve never seen a baseball player like Michael Taylor, he’s a freak. I think some people are selling his projection short, he’s still learning to lift the ball and when he does learn to do so the results are going to be scary. He’s one of the smarter ball players around as well. I’m definitely a fan of his.

San Francisco’s AA Connecticut 2B, only 23 (9/11/85) and has some skills with the stick:
3-3 today, BB, 2 errors (11 on season), and a 2-3 with 2 BB yesterday:

Intense season line:
hitting .354 with a 47:46 BB:K ratio, 1 HR, 12 SB (13 CS ouch), OBP around .450, SLG around .425, has greatly improved every month. Really think he’s something with the bat, and awful with the glove, maybe a move to another position could help him.

Chris Carter. 1-3 (2b), 2 walks, 2ks.

RE: Drabek

Is anyone concerned about his AA L/R splits?

Today Reddick, Kalish, and Anderson, three good LH prospects went 4-9 off him with a double and a homer (Kalish).

by ajake57 on Jul 27, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really

identical K, BB, and HR ratios (actually a bit better vs. lefties).

The only differences are the .363 BABIP vs. lefties and .223 vs. righties which doesn’t seem sustainable.

He has given up many more doubles, which indicates that it’s not ALL BABIP luck, but it’s not like he’s got Cahill’s splits.

Carlos Santana

Garko gone.

VMart surely next. Does Santana skip AAA and get called right up, or do they let him season a bit more in the minors until at least September?

by Galt on Jul 27, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

I def. see Santana getting called up if Vmart is dealt. Maybe not away though. They might let Shoppach get some more at-bats and see if he can get near the mendoza line.

by Ion293 on Jul 28, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

misunderstood the post

Thought the call was Santana to replace Garko. Santana for V-Mart obviously makes sense. But I disagree that VMart is “surely next” because the Indians wisely traded Ryan Garko.

by cowboy4eva on Jul 28, 2009 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

There was a report today that

a Cleveland exec was “1,000% sure” that VMart and Lee would both be traded b/c of financial issues.

by alskor on Jul 27, 2009 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yahoo quoted an article from the Boston Globe

saying Cleveland turned down Buchholz for VMart as well as Bowden/Masterson/OF prospect(unnamed) for VMart. Alskor you seem to be very on top of all things Red Sox, do you think a deal gets done there? Or was this maybe before they traded for LaRoche?

RIP Nick Adenhart

by gatling on Jul 28, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow

I can’t believe Cleveland would turn down those offers.

by Ion293 on Jul 28, 2009 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Buchholz for VMart

I believe the rumors were Boston turned that down and countered with a Bowden/Materson type offer.

by cowboy4eva on Jul 28, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

that sounds right.

I’m thinking Clay Buchholz is starting to wonder who he has to kill to get out of Pawtucket for more than 2 days at a time.

Seriously. If the guy had ended with the “terrible” luck of getting drafted by, say, the Nationals, he’d probably already be well into his 3rd major league season and looking forward to that big payday in a couple more seasons.

And if you’re Michael Bowden? Your best bet is to fake your own death.

by mrkupe on Jul 28, 2009 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions

He is in the MLB rotation now

The Wakefield injury has allowed a prolonged look. Another major reason I can’t see them trading him.

by alskor on Jul 28, 2009 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup

That’s what i was just saying too. I definitely saw it reported both ways, but this one seems much more likely.

How bout this: Does anyone put together a better offer for VMart? I would rather have Wade Davis, sure… but if its just Davis and filler vs. Bowden/Masterson/(Kalish?). Tough call. Probably take the Boston offer.

The idea of Tampa swooping in for VMart and/or Lee terrifies me. What a great fit for the Rays either of those would be. When I saw the report that they were trying to land both I nearly crapped myself.

by alskor on Jul 28, 2009 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

They are still very interested in VMart

as well as Cliff Lee.

Ive also seen it that the Sox turned down VMart for Buchholz – and it makes more sense if the Sox turned down Buchholz+ for VMart, IMO. I have to think if the Tribe got offered Buchholz for VMart they could probably have found a middle ground by now. Conversely, if the Sox had decided to give up Buchholz in a deal they would probably not have blinked if Cleveland asked for a bit more. This also makes sense in light of that Bowden/Masterson + offer.

Jon Heyman reported today that the Sox are frustrated and not getting anywhere on VMart so theyve been focusing on Adrian Gonzalez. Frankly, I dont see much chance of either happening. The Red Sox are very good as they stand now. They would absolutely love to get a middle of the order hitter, but there really isnt a pressing need on this club.

Theo Epstein loves to add impact players at the deadline and is very creative when doing so… so you never want to say never, but I just can’t believe theyd part with so many of their top prospects. They adore Clay Buchholz, though there are (totally unsubstantiated) murmurs of frustration with off field stuff. Nothing bad, but coachability sort of stuff you could say… nothing out of the norm for young kids. They still love him and think he’s going to be a 1/2 starter. Its really hard to see them parting with… even for a VMart.

Its really tough to say right now… I think I see Boston standing pat or making another non-major move. Theyd like to get someone who can hit RHPs and play the OF (preferably an infield corner, too). Right now the only backup OFer is Baldelli. Nate Green is the 5th OFer at this point. That’s not gonna cut it.

I dont see any chance of Adrian Gonzalez. The price will be sky high. Cliff Lee would be nice, but I also can’t see them paying that price. I wouldnt be shocked to see them swoop in on Halladay. I think VMart is the most likely of those four, but not particularly likely. Im sure the Rays having interest in Lee and VMart is a major factor in their interest as well.

VMart would be an ideal fit. Switch hitter, Can play catcher and 1B. They can rotate Tek, LaRoche, Lowell and VMart (with a lion’s share going to VMart). That will allow them to play matchups a lot, will strengthen the bench a great deal and provide complete insurance in case of a Lowell injury. Further, the extra rest for Tek and Lowell certainly couldnt hurt, either.

I kind of rambled here… its just a very tough call on what they will do. Ive gone back and forth on it a lot. I wouldnt be shocked either way. Personally, I would love to see VMart in Boston… but I just wouldnt give up Clay Buchholz for pretty much anyone. I still see a future Ace there.

by alskor on Jul 28, 2009 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess

if they can make a deal for an impact guy without giving up Reddick, Kelly or Clay they would do it. Might add Bard to that list, too. So if they can make a guy like a VMart or Lee happen for Lars, Masterson, Bowden, Tazawa, Kalish, Pimental, Doubront… those types… well, I think they would pull the trigger. Seems like something that will go down to the deadline and then fifteen minutes after we hear about some clever move we werent expecting. In the meantime we’ll hear a lot of blockbusters theyre considering but dont pull off. Theo keeps his hand in EVERYTHING. He also runs a lot of interference on Tampa and New York.

I also think they could very well get an impact guy without giving up Reddick, Kelly, Clay or Bard. That’s more ammo than a lot of teams have. Gonna be very interesting.

by alskor on Jul 28, 2009 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for responding

It would definitely make more sense if Boston turned down Buchholz-VMart, I found that kind of odd that it said Cleveland had said no. A buddy and I were going thru the Boston system the other day trying to figure out who they might send to Oakland if they did trade for Cabrera, and we went 15 names deep at least on guys that were pretty much no chance types…just shows how deep Boston’s system is and how they could pull of two major moves and still have a good farm system.

Jiovanni Mier

Went 3-3 with 2 doubles and 2 walks today. Still very early obviously, but so far Mier has looked pretty good as an 18 year old SS in rookie ball. He’s batting .311 with a .419 OBP and a .485 SLG (.333/.443/.517 in July). He’s walked 16 times and struck out 21 times and has 7 SBs (caught twice) in his approximately 120 plate appearances on the season.

I’m still not really sold on Lyles’ ceiling, but I quite liked Mier pre-draft. I thought his bat might have been a little underestimated . . .but man, was anybody expecting this?

Between a reasonably well rounded and better-than-expected bat and good defense at shortstop, I imagine he’ll be a popular youngster for those of us who like to partake in top prospects lists at year’s end . . .and with good reason.
