Trade Thoughts...

Looking for thoughts on this possible trade...

J Santana for Strasburg and C Santana

Star-divide

My team is in the middle of serious rebuilding, I think we'll be back in the thick of it by 2011. Here's the roster that I'm building from...

C: Posey

1b: A Gonzo, Morrison

2b: Kendrick

SS: Beckham, Furcal, Grant Green

3b: Sandoval, P Alvarez

OF: Upton, Rasmus, Heyward, Vlad, Abreu

SP: Zambrano, Zimmermann, Price, Holland, Tillman, Latos, Bumgarner, Rondon, Lyles, Carter, Bailey

We can freeze 20 men at the end of the season. If we make the trade, then Strasburg would be an 8th SP, if not it would stay Santana.

So, as I said, I don't anticipate being ready to compete until 2011, so who will be the better pitcher from 2011 and beyond? Santana has been creaky the last 2 years, so is he on a downward path? Even if he is on a downward path, he's certain to be above average for a while.

C Santana is a fine prospect, but I don't think he's better than Posey. But he could be someone to trade when he starts to catch in the bigs. When do people think it'll happen?

Just to continue the thoughts...

If Strasburg doesn’t sign, we reverse the deal.

Santana is the bird in the hand, but seems like he’s having some chronic issues that may have moved him from a top 5 pitcher to top 10. Still very very good. However, he’ll be 32 by the time I think we’re ready to make a run. So will he still be a top 10 guy in 2011?

Beyond the hype, it seems as if top ranked college pitchers do have periods of effectiveness, normally cut short by breakdown. Wilson didn’t, but I think he was over-worked his draft year which set the stage for his downfall.

So I expect Strasburg to be effective, maybe being the dominant player everyone expects, the main risk is health. I’ve seen conflicting reports, and it’s mainly been the web scouts that worry about his mechanics. I didn’t really hear anything out of MLB that would cause concern.

It’s certainly risky, and I know you have calculated risks, but maybe tihs is too risky. I’m pretty happy with our current stable of arms, so this may be overkill.

I Strasburg signs...

he could be better than Santana in 2011. Good deal for you if you are rebuilding.

This is exactly the kind of deal Im usually against...

but… I think Id pull the trigger here. Santana and Strasburg are prospects… but theyre both basically ready. Id be very tempted.

Yeah, I'm with you...

For most of my like 15 years in fantasy, I’d been on the side that was getting Johan, not giving. But I’m also a big believer in recognizing your window to win, and concentrating efforts to maximize point production during that time.

We started rebuilding 2007 off-season with a trade for Price, pickup of Heyward, then getting two more draft picks and taking Posey, Alvarez, and G Beckham in 2008, and the rebuilding was underway. This year we for Bumgarner and Tillman, and picked up the other young pitchers.

So right now, I’m thinking 2011 is our year to start making a push, so some of these guys need to go, like trading Abreu, and Vlad clearly needs to happen, then Santana…I just wasn’t so sure about since pitching is so weird. But Stras and C Santana are so close, it felt like they both could be contributing by 2011 and potentially score enough to cover most of Santana’s projected production, and they’re young so it helps with our attempts to build for the future.

off topic, I run a serious money dynasty league that needs a new owner

League just started up a couple months ago, and isn’t playing in 2009, but will start in 2010. League has some of the best owners from around this blog, leagues ive played in and others. Its a 16 team H2H points based with the buy in for next year being $25(going up the years after). Here is a link to the website.

As you can see we have a great looking site and are looking for a new Baltimore Orioles team. The team is stacked with young talent, and needs an owner ready to take over and win!
Just to give you an insight on what we started with: each team kept 10MLB players and 5MILB players. We are finishing up both drafts(MLB and MILB) where we put together a 35 man roster complied of both MLB and MILB players. You have the option to add 5 more players for a complete 40 man roster.

My email is andrew.j.batson@gmail.com or my YIM: jombarii311 or AIM: fishingtilnoon

If you are interested please reach me through one of those sources. I am lookin for someone who is going to be on constantly and wants to make deals for a good up and coming orioles team.

Thanks everyone!

Decided to pull the trigger for a number of reasons…

I think there’s a fair chance Stras is within a stone’s throw of Santana in 2011.
For me, a huge part of fantasy baseball is prospecting, choosing those guys you think will be stars, and watching them develop. So rooting for Stras to dominate sounds more fun than rooting for a slow decline from Santana.

Yup

Its a real risk… and an extremely unusual situation… but no guts, no glory.
