Which player is the best bet from the 2009 draft NOT to sign

Any player, any round, high school or college. If you had your hard earned money riding on one pick NOT to sign with their team this year, who do you take??? Guessing it would be some later round flyer a cheap team took on a talented HS kid?

My first round pick

Tyler Matzek

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Of the picks that have the highest potential, this is my pick. He did not look pleased to be drafted by the Rockies but it could have been a combination of when he was selected as well.

I think Wheeler was visably upset that the Giants called his name just before the Braves. Born and raised in GA, I bet you he dreamed of putting a Braves uniform on since he first picked up a baseball. I doubt the Braves are in position to take him in a few years if he were to pass up the money to go play college ball but I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t sign.

There are a ton of late guys I don’t think will sign. Maddux is a good one, Brian Goodwin, Richie Shaffer, Andrew Susac…you could list a few hundred guys that should be in this thread before Strasburg in my opinion.

Really the only answer in this thread that is close to answering the question.

Strasburg

for some reason the last couple days I get the feeling the Natinals are going to banish him to a year of indy ball and draft him again next year hoping to save some money.

by smoooooth on Jul 19, 2009 10:25 AM EDT reply actions

Doubt it

Its not worth the risk of him telling them they can’t redraft him.

by CRUSHDAVIS on Jul 19, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

They're on pace to be able to draft Harper anyways

So instead of Strasburg/Harper, they’ll have Harper and some far inferior talent that they’ll be forced to take since the “makeup pick” is not protected and has far less leverage (see: Aaron Crow to Drew Storen). It’s never a good idea to have a first round pick go unsigned.

by jibs on Jul 19, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Ummm....

If they get the first and second pick, and one of them is not protected….doesn’t that mean the other pick is? Couldn’t they theoretically draft Strasburgh again with the protected pick and really screw with him?

by JayWise on Jul 19, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure and walk away without Strasburg or Harper potentially. Why and the hell would they do that? Why would the ownder let Rizzo keep his job?

by jfish26101 on Jul 19, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

Strasburg would have to give the Nationals permission to redraft him.

Also, I think Strasburg goes unsigned too. The Nationals just have so many problems now that I think Strasburg will get lost in them. Besides I can’t see the Nationals giving him the 10+ million he wants.

JOE, you are the first

to write anything close to what I have been writing for months, which is: why should washington bust the bank on a PITCHER who has thrown zero professional pitches.

Last year’s top pick got $6 million
Mark Prior has record of, I think, $10 million.

People writing “yeah, give him $20 million or $30 million” are, IMHO, idiots.

strokemberg has no leverage. Let him sit out a year…

by tuna411 on Jul 19, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

if I were Strasburg

I wouldn’t want to take the risk of pitching in some indy league. If they are willing to give me Prior money I take it all day long. I totally agree with the Natinals not giving him some outrageous record contract.

by smoooooth on Jul 19, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He doesn't have to pitch in an indy league

Everyone already knows how good he is. Hell, he could just go back to San Diego State, quit the baseball team, and just finish up his degree and he’d still be the obvious #1 overall pick next season.

Oh, I don't know

I heard something along the lines of “he’s the best pitching prospect in the history of the amateur draft.” Maybe it was just phone static.

Strasburg has plenty of leverage

His camp’s leverage is to say “you can do one of the following: 1) use your draft pick to get the consensus best pitching prospect in recent memory into your organization, or 2) turn that same draft pick into a middling 3rd round-type talent that won’t join your organization until a year from now.”

by jibs on Jul 19, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

The Nationals knew that Strasburg would ask for a record signing bonus when they took him

To now decide that they will not break the bank to sign him would be a massive management failure. If they didn’t intend to meet his demands, they should’ve taken one of the other top talents this year that had an asking price they could afford.

by jibs on Jul 19, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

If they lowball him, there is no way he gives consent next year.

by jfish26101 on Jul 20, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Minor

I think the Braves view him as late-first round slot and he’s like “hey, I’m #7. that’s what I’m worth”. The Braves, knowing full well that they’ll have more money to spend in next year’s DEEPER draft (and with the impending departure of both Soriano and Gonzalez, both type-A projected), will call his bluff. He won’t sign and the Braves will, most likely, have something like 6 picks in the first round/supplemental.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 19, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

for what it's worth

Minor and his people have reportedly said they think he’s going to add some velocity. It’s kind of a weird claim to make, but given that raw stuff is his biggest question it’s an interesting note.

I really can’t believe that the Braves would be dumb enough to draft a guy that they want to sign below-slot without having a pre-draft deal in place. I think this deal gets done – neither side benefits if there is no deal.

by mrkupe on Jul 19, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

Braves would save $ (which is something we need to do) and Minor could PROVE that he added Velocity in an Indie league and come back next year.

adding velocity? he gonna ’roid?

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 19, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

velocity

I believe the idea out of the Minor camp is that they think natural physical maturity and the benefits of going on a pro style workout and throwing program will help him add another couple of ticks to his fastball. I’m not sure how much I buy that, and it’s unusual for a college pitcher to be using that as a marketing tool for themselves. Nonetheless, there ARE some guys who do end up improving their stuff in the transition (although I imagine you’d find more guys who see a bit of a dropoff).

I don’t think the Braves really care that much about saving money in this case. Braves fans who were hoping they’d draft Jacob Turner or Tyler Matzek might be hoping the Braves forget about Minor and instead set their eyes on a big-time prep arm for next year, but that’s clearly not what they’re interested in. Minor was the guy they decided they liked, and a month and a half ago they liked him enough to commit a top-ten selection and the bonus that comes with that slot to him. Why exactly they like him so much I don’t know, but they’re not going to just give up on signing him. They had No. 7 slot money to offer to any guy on the board that they liked . . .even without going over slot, they could have had plenty of high-upside guys. But they preferred Minor then, and I don’t know why they would suddenly not prefer him to whatever might be there next year.

I would be very surprised if the Braves don’t sign Minor.

by mrkupe on Jul 19, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Unlikely

Minor is probably just holding out for non-slashed slot money. Teams don’t typically play the types of games you are talking about.

And the Braves probably don’t WANT 6 picks in the first-through-supplemental rounds. That would be either incredibly expensive for one draft, or they would be forced to waste some of the picks a la the Giants a few years back (taking Jackson Williams, Wendell Fairley, and Charlie Culberson with their excess picks).

A little off topic, I run a money dynastyt league and need a great owner for the Baltimore Orioles

League just started up a couple months ago, and isn’t playing in 2009, but will start in 2010. League has some of the best owners from around this blog, leagues ive played in and others. Its a 16 team H2H points based with the buy in for next year being $25(going up the years after). Here is a link to the website.
http://baseballheaven.proboards.com/index.cgi

As you can see we have a great looking site and are looking for a new Baltimore Orioles team. The team is stacked with young talent, and needs an owner ready to take over and win!
Just to give you an insight on what we started with: each team kept 10MLB players and 5MILB players. We are finishing up both drafts(MLB and MILB) where we put together a 35 man roster complied of both MLB and MILB players. You have the option to add 5 more players for a complete 40 man roster.

My email is andrew.j.batson@gmail.com or my YIM: jombarii311 or AIM: fishingtilnoon

If you are interested please reach me through one of those sources. I am lookin for someone who is going to be on constantly and wants to make deals for a good up and coming orioles team.

Colton Cain

2 way player that is a very strong commitment to my Longhorns. LHP will be what takes him to the promise land. Pirates drafted him in the 8th Round. There is no chance he signs.

by JDizzidy on Jul 19, 2009 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Cain

I think he’d be open to signing for the right money, but the Pirates have other attractive prep arms they can blow money on that are probably going to come considerably cheaper.

I’d love to see him at UT next year.

Out of first rounders, Tate or Matzek

I think the hard-sign college players all sign (Strasburg, Green, Ackley, etc.).

><

by Blicks on Jul 19, 2009 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

Matzek or Kentrali Davis

Matzek wants $7M and the Rockies have already signed 2 guys who were projected as 1st rounders (T. Wheeler & Brothers) or Kentrali Davis who was a supp. pick by the Brewers-he came into the year as a 1st round talent but had a bad year-adding to Davis’ leverage he was a draft eligible sophomore so he could return to Tennessee.

Grab Some Pine Meat!

The Davis situation is insane. Sets his price, team matches it…oh wait, I want more. Ridiculous.

Shelby Miller

It appears less and less likley every day that he doesn’t end up in College Station.

by CoolCat23 on Jul 20, 2009 10:13 AM EDT reply actions

What makes you say that?

From all I’ve read and heard, if there is a first rounder that doesn’t sign, it’s Matzek. Strasburg, Tate and Miller seem to be locks to be signed – just at the deadline itself.
