Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Franklin Gutierrez

Not sure if you have noticed, but this former prospect is quietly putting together a pretty good season for the Ms.

2009 Stats: (291 AB) .296/.356/.464, 44 R, 12 HR, 40 RBI, 6 SB, 61/26 K/BB

Believe it or not, he is actually hitting better at Safeco (hell for RH hitters) than on the road.  Over the past couple of seasons he has gained the reputation of a guy that rakes lefties, but struggles against righties.  However, a .284/.335/.405 line against right-handers this season isnt exactly horrendous.  From what I remember, he was considered a pretty good prospect 4 or 5 years ago.  He had the 'toolsy' label coming up through the minors.

Do you think he is finally putting it together or is he just on a hot streak?  FWIW, he plays excellent defense in CF.

a little of both. I think he’s a good player considering his defense, though. Should hang around MLB for awhile and I see some upside there.

Joe Carter upside?

I read that comparison on a Seattle prospects site. Not sure if I agree with it though. Joe had mo power.

I see more of a poor man's Mike Cameron

Lots of glove with a little bit of speed and power.

Not as good as peak Mike Cameron, by any means, but a player who brings the same elements to the table, but nowhere near the same quantities, other than the glove.

No Joe Carter

…. but i think Gutierrez’z gains as a hitter are for real. he just looks like a ==differnet guy lately. really worked at being more selective early in the season- moving runners over- and just contributing offensively. now is getting pitches to drive and his very good natural power is starting to show.

Btw, i dont take or get the chance to gloat a lot but Gutierrex was involved in the ONE fantasy trade I posted about here in my years on this site (got Gutierrez, Erick Ayabr. and Asdrubal Cabrera- gave Jose Reyes and a toss in) and 94% said I got the short end as well as saying such things as Josde Reyes was a “sure thing” not true, that Gutierrez was a “bench player” and. Erick Ayabr was a “utility player”- true excpt hes hitting .300 and could win the gold glove at Short

Is that a joke?

What about Torii Hunter? Adam Jones? Carlos Beltran?

3.5 Wins Above Replacement so far

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=cf&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=6&season=2009&month=0

ZiPS projects him to have a .347 wOBA this year, and with a +20 glove in CF, he’s 26 year old a 5-6 win player who makes the league minimum and isn’t a Free Agent until 2013.

He has the same slash line as Jones but much better defensively.

Right now, Jones only beats him in arm strength. Jones has more upside, though.

I love Fangraphs

But defensive stats still have a very far way to go. So you can’t go and take their defensive values as gospel. Nick Markakis and Shane Victorino apparently nave turned into an atrocious fielders this year. Also, Adam Jones is a putrid fielder.

defensively?

Sure.

Has been better so far this season? Maybe.

Better than all 3 players period? No.

Still a very good player though..

right-handed Curtis Granderson?

Grandy struggles vs lefties, Gutty vs righties.

Both have similar power potential I beleive.

Grandy gets the edge in SBs, but I think Gutty can hit 20 SBs in a season eventually.

Both play excellent defense in CF.

Perhaps this is too optimistic of a comp, but it might not be THAT far off.
