Your Ultimate Prospect Team

We all get so caught up in top 25s and what not, how about we as a community try to make our own ultimate prospect team.  Pick a full nine fielders (including a DH, who can play any position), a full 5 man starting rotation, and two bulpen guys.  Use only the top prospects, in your opinion of course.  I'll give it a try

C: Buster Posey

1B: Justin Smoak

2B: Jemile Weeks

SS: Alcides Escobar

3B: Brett Wallace

LF: Matt Laporta

CF: Mike Stanton

RF: Jason Heyward

DH: Yonder Alonso

P: Strasburg, Bumgarner, Tillman, Feliz, Latos, Perry, Schlereth

I know by making something like this, I am essentially throwing myself to the wolves, but I figured it might be fun for the community for people to make their own ultimate prospect team.  This is just meant to, as John says, stimulate and create a discussion.

You see Latos as a RP?

by Mets2k9 on Jul 17, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought...

San Diego just called him up to pitch in the bullpen. He would be good in the bullpen short term, but long term he should be in the rotation. Much like Feliz is.

Nevermind...

he was called up to be a starter. even still I think he would be better served pitching in the bullpen his first year in the majors.

I'm assuming

You like Pat Venditte cause of his freakin’ sweet ambidextrous abilities?

OF COURSE!!!

And look what happened to the last ambidextrous player to make a big name for himself (Pablo Sandoval).

DH: Yonder Alonso?

Ironic…

Anyway, my team:

C Posey
1B Smoak
2B Weeks
SS Brignac
3B Cardenas
OF Saunders
OF Stanton
OF Heyward
DH Carter

SP Strasburg
SP White
SP Matusz
SP Bumgarner
SP Tillman

CL McGee

(I’m not trying to be a homer here by picking numerous A’s prospects… Cardenas just got “moved” to third because of a lack of talent at the position and Weeks was next in line…)

I can see Cardenas over Brett Wallace if you privilige defense

But Chris Carter? Is he really a better hitter than Jesus Montero? Matt LaPorta? Hell, Brett Lawrie? A DH who needs a high BABIP To get a .912 OPS in AA doesn’t exactly scream “superstar”

Ill take a shot

C: Carlos Santana (Posey is right there, though)
1B: Justin Smoak
2B: Jemile Weeks (Im kind of surprised at how much of a consensus pick this is – deserves it, though)
SS: Tim Beckham ( I do like Escobar, though)
3B: Lonnie Chisenhall (Love Wallace’s bat, but he’s not a 3B)
OF: Mike Stanton
OF: Jason Heyward
OF: Desmond Jennings (It really bothers me to have neither Dom. Brown or Taylor in here… or LaPorta, too)
DH: Jesus Montero

SP Strasburg
SP Feliz
SP Bumgarner
SP Matusz
SP Tillman

I think part of what's going on with the Weeks thing

is that 2B is kind of a stepchild position… most players who end up there are failed shortstops… so on the rare occasion that a “true” second baseman is a top-tier prospect, he might be more likely to be seen as the consensus top guy at the position.

Yeah

The only guy I considered against Weeks was Lawrie, but defense won that point. My only question with Weeks is that nobody expected this kind of power – there’s a pretty decent chance that it’s just a small sample size issue

I'll play...

C: Posey
1b: Smoak
2b: Weeks (I don’t really like any of them, have to say)
SS: Escobar (Feel like Beckham or Green (if he signs) could push him)
3b: Wallace (Although check out Alvarez, 368 in last 10 games!)
OF: Heyward
OF: Stanton
OF: Taylor (his numbers over the past year and a half are very impressive)
DH: Montero
SP: Strasburg (I’ll include him because others did, but I think there’s a fair chance he doesn’t sign)
SP: Matusz
SP: Tillman
SP: Bumgarner
SP: Latos
RP: Feliz

I would reverse Tillman and Bumgarner, otherwise I agree entirely.

cardenas over weeks

july OPS so far

Weeks: .343
Cardenas: .988

BA’s hotsheet:

3. ADRIAN CARDENAS
Team: Double-A Midland (Texas)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .423/.444/.731 (11-for-26), 5 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 SO
With an easy, compact swing, Cardenas is the type of player who could sleepwalk his way to a .300 average. His pure hit tool ranks among the best in the organization, and he has the strike-zone judgment (shown in part by his 37 walks and 35 strikeouts in Double-A) to make it all come together for him at the plate. A brief trial in Triple-A didn’t work out, but the lefty-swinging Cardenas is still one of the youngest players in the Texas League, where he’s hitting .358/.429/.489, ranking second in the league in average and on-base and third in OPS.
