Q about Wallace

I’ve heard there are doubts about whether he can stick at third. Is this true?

by RWRays on Jul 12, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, he made a good play earlier in the game, but the consensus is that he'll have to move across the diamond...

not that he will with Pujols there, so I believe St. Louis will play him at third when he’s ready to be called up and suffer with the defense if they have too.

That’s just my opinion on the situation though.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

not sure what to think about feliz

Obviously it’s a tiny sample size, but he didn’t overly impress me. Yes, he throws very hard but it was straight as an arrow, his breaking pitch didn’t seem to have that much movement, and I think major league hitters will lay off a lot more of his pitches outside the zone.

by was385 on Jul 12, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry. But I laugh at you, if you weren’t impressed.

I'm impressed by the arm, absolutely

just not everything else by that small exposure to him. How many swings did he get on fastballs well outside of the zone? Do you really think major league hitters are going to swing at those?

by was385 on Jul 12, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

More than you realize. He’s got a good bit more movement than your picking up, and at that velocity, you don’t have time to be picky. Sure, he needs better control, but he’s super young, so wait on that. Especially with arm like that.

I'm not nailing the coffin shut on him

how is it funny?

I’m not saying that I think he’s terrible or anything like that. I’m just saying from that inning, he didn’t life up to all the hype surrounding him in my eyes and I think if you looked past the velocity and hype, a lot of you would too. But whatever, you’re allowed to have your own opinions just like I am but I’m not going to be a dick about it.

by was385 on Jul 12, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

It's comical

because you’re actually having a discussion about movement when you could just get the velocity and break data from gameday. 97-101 with about 6’ of break. Yeah, your eyes can tell you what you want, but to straight up dismiss gameday in order to make yourself feel better about a horrid trade is comical.

So your denial, that’s what’s comical

ok, well what more do want him to do?

throw 110? He threw every pitch over 97 and alot of them at 100 with 6 inches of movement on it, there just arent pitchers who can do that

well if I could change something that inning

I’d like to see him throw more pitches in the strikezone because as I’ve said, I don’t think major leaguers will swing at nearly as many balls as minor leaguers.

I really could care less about what everyone else thinks

Otherwise I’d go “wow, VELOCITY!!!!” like everyone else. I laid out exactly what I thought. Great arm, really good velocity (I dont think it was 101, but 96-98 consistently seems right (and considering the report was 4 mph low, that sounds about right), and a lot of swings at fastballs out of the zone that major leaguers would lay off. Not saying he won’t improve his command, not saying he won’t be a very successful major leaguer, not saying I’m not impressed by his outing, just not as impressed as I expected to be since I really have liked him since he started pitching with the Braves.

by was385 on Jul 12, 2009 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

alright

But that was 100 MPH stuff, he’s been throwing like that ever since he’s been put in the pen, and you wont find a better fastball in the entirety of MiLB… The pitch is just that unique with great movement, he gets swing and misses on it because of that. He’s been improving his control all year at AAA to the tune of posting the 2nd best FIP in the PCL. He’s walked less and less batters. He still needs to work on his secondary pitches, but he’s 21 YRs old.

why does everyone think I'm saying he sucks?

The guys in the booth were sayin that he could have a big impact on the AL West this season and that ‘s the kind of hype he has, I’m not saying he won’t ever be a huge impact arm and obviously he has a ton of time to improve because he is young, but I just don’t think he lived up to the hype from that tiny little sample.

Opening day? Probably would be a really bad idea.

Mid-season? Maybe, but probably still not a good idea unless they move him really quickly to AAA and he handles that competition easily.

I would hope by now we’d all understand the value of a lot of patience. Especially with prospects not yet old enough to drink.

I wouldn't consider it too likely.

Not really a smart idea to rush up a prospect like that. Maybe mid 2010, but I let him have all the AA and AAA time he needs.

Matusz

I think he’ll need time to solidify his command at the highest levels. . .but he’s got a nice deep repertoire of quality pitches.

matusz

ok, matusz impressions…..it was just one inning, but IIRC he looked smoother in college. I liked Drabek’s delivery a lot better.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

honestly

drabek looks like the son of a MLer. That is type of delivery you teach to your kids, wow

by Michael Cave on Jul 12, 2009 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

heh

This guy just jumped 10-15 spots on everybody’s list . . .well, the ones who didn’t have him rated properly, that is.

by mrkupe on Jul 12, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha

he did on mine admittedly

by Michael Cave on Jul 12, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

I had the top three Phillies guys all top 20. Drabek i had over Latos. Kid’s a beast.

Hey guys, I run a music blog. alternative, powerpop, punk, electronica, screamo, etc etc, check it out. http://muzikdizcovery.blogspot.com/ artist interviews and many other stuff. free cookies! (not really, but still) :D

That wasn't his delivery coming out of high school though

The Phils “rebuilt” his mechanics after his TJ surgery.

really?

well they did a good job.

by Michael Cave on Jul 12, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed according to BA

“Ben Badler, whose sitting down behind the plate, reports that Yohan Flande strides toward first and throws across his body” via twitter Flande has some problems 2

I really wanted to see Bumgarner

since reported fasbtall readings are conflicting and to see how pedestrian his secondary offerings are

http://caincecum.blogspot.com/

by caincecum on Jul 12, 2009 7:07 PM EDT reply actions

the reports on the secondary stuff is inconsistent, because the pitch is inconsistent. It can look very good, and it can not. Fastball readings have been pretty consistent: where are you getting the different reads?

I've heard 92-94

ive heard 93-96 bt yea I understand what you mean i’ve heard it’s been plus to underwhelming at times for that reson

by caincecum on Jul 12, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he floats in that range….no real difference in those reports(92-96). The key for him will be the change.

samuel

Samuel….pretty ugly numbers.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

numbers don't lie

Eric Young Jr. homers off him, not a huge power threat.

Eric Young Jr.

When is he gonna get a call-up?

by mplaka21 on Jul 12, 2009 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

young

Eric Young!!

I really think people underrate this guy, and I’m not sure why….he’s very fast, son of a major leaguer.

Fielding

I heard his glove was bad at second – shift to outfield (Uptons) may be in his future

by byronlhsdrmr on Jul 12, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

glove

yeah i’ve heard that too. But i’ve seen him play a lot in the minors and he’s never looked bad to me…maybe not great, but not bad.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

his stats are pretty pedestrian for a guy playing in a hitter paradise

by superk1ng on Jul 12, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

yes

Yes, they are. But I still like him.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

reasons

-lack of draft pedigree
-plays in the Colorado system (a bunch of offense-happy places)
-some may believe his pop doesn’t project to the majors (related to the second)
-glove questions

I guess it’s a credit to sabermetrics, although mistakenly so in this case?

by mrkupe on Jul 12, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

draft

I think point ONE is the most important one….because traditionalists who still look at the tradiitonal things more than the stat things don’t praise him much, The guy can fly, and usually traditionalists love that.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

young

guys like that are usually overrated, not underrated

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

DEEZY

with a solid AB. want to see him run

by daveh33 on Jul 12, 2009 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

Samuel is short-arming the ball

could see arm-issues arriving unless he changes something.

Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson

by gore51 on Jul 12, 2009 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

if his arm could hold together, and he matures a little, I could see a SU or CL later on

Just saying.

LOL at Dodgers for giving him up for Casey Blake.

samuel

Samuel has got some stuff, but very unrefined

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Carter

Popup. He’s a true A. Though he’d be a true A if he GIDP or struck out.

by Orodawg on Jul 12, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

No

He’d be a true A if he was on the DL.
