The gun on Gameday
Has Felix in the 97-100 range:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2009_07_12_wftmin_uftmin_1&mode=gameday
Tillman was working 92 – 96
that seems more right to me
than the gun on ESPN

feliz
After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard.

Totally agree.

This will be interesting
i saw a few times in Frisco last yr and Feliz was TERRIBLE holding runners. Dont think wallace is really a threat though
Q about Wallace
I’ve heard there are doubts about whether he can stick at third. Is this true?
Yeah, he made a good play earlier in the game, but the consensus is that he'll have to move across the diamond...
not that he will with Pujols there, so I believe St. Louis will play him at third when he’s ready to be called up and suffer with the defense if they have too.
That’s just my opinion on the situation though.

Is it Bumgarner time?
me hope so

i’m guessing he won’t pitch. he was warming up before the delay, so he probably went the way of Tazawa

drabekj
drabek. Ok this guy is having a great year. Looks like he’s overcome makeup issue and the arm problms too
not sure what to think about feliz
Obviously it’s a tiny sample size, but he didn’t overly impress me. Yes, he throws very hard but it was straight as an arrow, his breaking pitch didn’t seem to have that much movement, and I think major league hitters will lay off a lot more of his pitches outside the zone.
Sorry. But I laugh at you, if you weren’t impressed.

"Obviously I’m not doing things like going toe-to-toe with a ninja. Find me a ninja, for one."--Brian Wilson
I'm impressed by the arm, absolutely
just not everything else by that small exposure to him. How many swings did he get on fastballs well outside of the zone? Do you really think major league hitters are going to swing at those?
More than you realize. He’s got a good bit more movement than your picking up, and at that velocity, you don’t have time to be picky. Sure, he needs better control, but he’s super young, so wait on that. Especially with arm like that.

I'm not nailing the coffin shut on him
I’m just saying that from that inning, I wasn’t as impressed as I expected I’d be based on the report on him
This is comical
I’m a white boy who doesn’t think a black man is good enough to manage my baseball team. - LSJ
"I really think that" - LSJ, on being asked by AirJordan
how is it funny?
I’m not saying that I think he’s terrible or anything like that. I’m just saying from that inning, he didn’t life up to all the hype surrounding him in my eyes and I think if you looked past the velocity and hype, a lot of you would too. But whatever, you’re allowed to have your own opinions just like I am but I’m not going to be a dick about it.
It's comical
because you’re actually having a discussion about movement when you could just get the velocity and break data from gameday. 97-101 with about 6’ of break. Yeah, your eyes can tell you what you want, but to straight up dismiss gameday in order to make yourself feel better about a horrid trade is comical.
So your denial, that’s what’s comical
I’m a white boy who doesn’t think a black man is good enough to manage my baseball team. - LSJ
"I really think that" - LSJ, on being asked by AirJordan
so can Zumaya
and he’s lit the world on fire so far in his career. I still really like him as a prospect, I’m just saying from that inning, I wasn’t as impressed as I expected to be.
ok, well what more do want him to do?
throw 110? He threw every pitch over 97 and alot of them at 100 with 6 inches of movement on it, there just arent pitchers who can do that
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
well if I could change something that inning
I’d like to see him throw more pitches in the strikezone because as I’ve said, I don’t think major leaguers will swing at nearly as many balls as minor leaguers.
We'll get a chance to see
pretty soon. He’ll be in the Rangers bullpen in a week or two.

but how many guys are there in the majors that can throw 95 easily and aren’t that successful? A big arm doesn’t necessarily mean success
he wasnt throwing 95
he was throwing 97-101 according to Mayo. The ESPN was not right during his whole inning

I really could care less about what everyone else thinks
Otherwise I’d go “wow, VELOCITY!!!!” like everyone else. I laid out exactly what I thought. Great arm, really good velocity (I dont think it was 101, but 96-98 consistently seems right (and considering the report was 4 mph low, that sounds about right), and a lot of swings at fastballs out of the zone that major leaguers would lay off. Not saying he won’t improve his command, not saying he won’t be a very successful major leaguer, not saying I’m not impressed by his outing, just not as impressed as I expected to be since I really have liked him since he started pitching with the Braves.
alright
But that was 100 MPH stuff, he’s been throwing like that ever since he’s been put in the pen, and you wont find a better fastball in the entirety of MiLB… The pitch is just that unique with great movement, he gets swing and misses on it because of that. He’s been improving his control all year at AAA to the tune of posting the 2nd best FIP in the PCL. He’s walked less and less batters. He still needs to work on his secondary pitches, but he’s 21 YRs old.

why does everyone think I'm saying he sucks?
The guys in the booth were sayin that he could have a big impact on the AL West this season and that ‘s the kind of hype he has, I’m not saying he won’t ever be a huge impact arm and obviously he has a ton of time to improve because he is young, but I just don’t think he lived up to the hype from that tiny little sample.
so, you can tell if someone is throwing 101 by watching on TV?
wow, what kind of eye surgery did you have.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
but wow
He’s REALLY short. I’d love to know his REAL height.
When I met Jimmy Rollins
the man was no more than 5’5"
He’s listed as 5’10"
Same deal with Lo Duca
I’m 5’8 so i can tell the difference between those heights pretty easily too.

well
he didnt see a ton of pitches…grounded out to 2nd…but at 17 not many people are ready for drabek…seriously, is he a miggy clone or what
wallace is also at home.....
but their both butcher like i wouldnt look to much into it

I think it's more telling of the location of the game
Maybe it has something to do with defense but I would guess it is more of a nod to the hometown crowd.
predictable?
Pedro Alvarez gets put away without much of a problem by lefty with decent stuff.
yeah
looked terrible in that 1st at bat and not so good his 2nd either
despite my mention of his height
I really like this one. He’s got the whole package . . .maybe only a couple of minor league arms I’d take over him. Maybe.

ignore the gun. just look at the movement, how the hitters pick it up or don’t pick it up.

Eh
Opening day? Probably would be a really bad idea.
Mid-season? Maybe, but probably still not a good idea unless they move him really quickly to AAA and he handles that competition easily.
I would hope by now we’d all understand the value of a lot of patience. Especially with prospects not yet old enough to drink.
I wouldn't consider it too likely.
Not really a smart idea to rush up a prospect like that. Maybe mid 2010, but I let him have all the AA and AAA time he needs.

I really wanted to see Bumgarner
since reported fasbtall readings are conflicting and to see how pedestrian his secondary offerings are
http://caincecum.blogspot.com/
the reports on the secondary stuff is inconsistent, because the pitch is inconsistent. It can look very good, and it can not. Fastball readings have been pretty consistent: where are you getting the different reads?

Yes, they are. But I still like him.
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions
reasons
-lack of draft pedigree
-plays in the Colorado system (a bunch of offense-happy places)
-some may believe his pop doesn’t project to the majors (related to the second)
-glove questions
I guess it’s a credit to sabermetrics, although mistakenly so in this case?
draft
I think point ONE is the most important one….because traditionalists who still look at the tradiitonal things more than the stat things don’t praise him much, The guy can fly, and usually traditionalists love that.
