Per Jonathan Mayo:
Just found out that #mlbfutures starting pitchers will be the O’s Chris Tillman and Junichi Tazawa from the Red Sox
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...
Heisey
One of the interesting players in this game is former 17th rounder Chris Heisey, who has put up one of the more impressive stat lines in the entire minor leagues. Widely seen as a potential 4th outfielder type before the year, the 24-year-old raked in AA (.347/.426/.572, 13/14 SB, 34 BB/34 K) and has carried that to AAA (14 gms, .365/.386/.654, 2/2 SB).
Are you a believer in the breakout and what would be his current grade? I believe it was C+ entering the year.
Heisey
He reminds me of Ryan Spilborghs. 5 solid tools, a solid approach, and solid defense — but nothing spectacular. That still makes him really valuable. That said, I had high hopes for Spilborghs and he has been a bit of a disappointment this year. So we’ll see if Heisey can translate similar potential into big league success.
I’d give Heisey a B grade right now. I think he should definitely contribute at the MLB level but probably lacks the ceiling of the best prospects in the game. Just my opinion though…
heisey
I like the Spillborghs comp. Logical.

me and my friend made a bet
we both drafted 3 hitters and 4 pitchers…we add up total bases and Ks. Whose evers team has more, buys the other a beer.
I took:
heyward
lawrie
tillman
matusz
parker
chris carter
feliz
he took:
wallace
heisley
escobar
tazawa
bumgarner
chacin
drabek
tillman
I really like the fact that the Orioles are giving Tillman as much time in Triple-A as the are. nice curveball!
Chris Carter
Looks like a stiff at first. AAAA guy at best!

Gillies
Gillies is an interesting guy, very under the radar until just recently. Not sure about how his power is going to project at higher levels.
Liddi
Liddi out of Italy…not a guy I’ve ever had a really good feeling for either way. Will he hit outside of high desert?
yes
Yes. If a guy is “tight” and overthrowing, it can cut into their velocity as well as their command.

the Braves have several now don’t they? With Linares in the Carolina league also. They are always a little old, but you have to think Canizares would be useful for someone in the majors.
re: linares
omar?
:p
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
White Sox news, Minor Leagues updates and more
I feel like Cuban players
Tend to be more MLB ready, and gamers then most of the other international free agents, mostly due to the fact that they are generally older, if not veterans already.

Gillies can fly
He made it close at 1st on a simple grounder to the 2B.
wallace
I would be talking about Wallace’s pick at third, relating that to his defensive questions, rather than focusing on Montero
Not a bad play by Wallace from third
He looked a bit awkward and it was slow moving, but still a good play
just pointing it out
nothing against him, but you can’t tell me that you didn’t cringe (especially if you were watching on HDTV)
that goes without saying
Randy Johnson and Greg Oden are in a league of their own, but Brett Wallace and Marshawn Lynch probably head the class of normal people.
stanton
Hmm….Stanton: Dave Winfield? Heyward: Fred McGriff with a good outfield glove?
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Heyward
Reminds me of Derrek Lee from the left side
this one will be rained out
you see the line of storms moving through
imagine that!

now i really really really
wish bumgarner started the game
http://caincecum.blogspot.com/
Ive been looking forward to this game for weeks.
SOB.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com
dammit
The futures game is really important for me. Since Kansas lost the Wichita Wranglers a couple of years ago, my travel expenses to see live games have increased sharply. It used to be I could take a day trip anytime I wanted, but now even a small trip involves a motel stay. I need the Futures Game!
All of us here need it.
Its our crack!

Any relatives you could visit for a while, at areas with a team nearby?
I wish more milb games were broadcasted; hopefully someday soon they will be.

Yeah, my mom lives in Des Moines. I do get lots of PCL games in.

but
But the Futures Game and my annual Arizona Fall League trip are critical.
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions
gotcha. Luckily, I live in the sf bay area, so it is easy to catch cal league or PCL games.
Thankfully, I don’t think were are too far away from more full video being recorded and kept online. As it is, the little snippets some record aren’t enough…but it should get better soon.

PCL and IL games are boring
not a ton of great prospects.
yep
Yes, exactly. I prefer the Texas League and Midwest League trips.

now granted I got lucky this year as I saw Wieters, Riemold, and Tillman play
missed Hanson because that was on a sunday evening. Riemold impressed me more than Wieters and Tillman was by far the best pitching prospect I saw this year. Mejia was the 2nd best, while Alderson is down on my list.
hmmmm I may stay down in the binghamton area either for the Reading or Akron series
depending on the weather and if the phillies give up the farm for Halladay.
I live in Syracuse
So, I have a IL team, but the IL stinks. I was excited when the Nationals first signed on, then Zimmerman and many others skipped. Plus my favorite team is the Astros, so I never get a chance to see any of their players live. I just wanted a peek at Jason Castro for a couple innings.
I missed Castro last year because I was too lazy to get to Oneonta for NYPA ball
What do you think of the Pitkan kid on Tri-City(Astros). I hate going to syracuse for baseball, such a dump of a stadium.
Can't argue with the stadium comment, but we are getting DMB to play there this summer...
I haven’t paid much attention to Tri-City this year, since they have few guys worth seeing (Kemp and ?) but, as far as I can tell he’s the best pitcher on that squad. I’ll have to go see them when they’re nearby and do some scouting though.
by byronlhsdrmr on Jul 12, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I scouted Graham Hicks of Vermont on Thursday night
Needs more consistancy with his fastball, ranged between 86-89 and popped off a 93. Good breaking pitches that are both above average, and a decent changeup at 81-82. The kid could also add about 40-50 lbs to his frame as he is the skinniest pitcher I have ever seen.
I was looking at the gun that Jack McGeary was using
I was sitting behind homeplate with about 10 pitchers and 4 or 5 scouts which is surprising for a NYPA game.
Me too
Yeah..even if the Nats sigfn Strasburg…I bet we dont see him..Hell even Detwiler skipped Syrcuse over(so far)..lots of baseball within driving distance though. But that Stadium and the way its run just get frustrating. How about Daytime baseball on the weekends and some early starts during the week after May 1st
So, should I hook up with Twitter or not? I have to admit, it sounds like a really stupid and useless product to me. But a lot of people seem to like it. Should I give in and sign up?
It's okay, but I use it significantly less than Facebook
It’s basically giving out messages of what’s going on and where your going to people who follow you on there.
Don't give in.
I don’t see what you gain from Twitter… other than hearing that the rain could stop in a half hour. But, if it doesn’t, it’s a big let down. Not worth it.
by byronlhsdrmr on Jul 12, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I already feel overstretched as it is. My cellphone is not intenet capable, so I wouldn’t be able to use it on the road anyway. But would it boost traffic and attention to the website?
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the site is enough
It’s not like twitter is going to allow you to get out more information and the stuff you post really isn’t time sensitive or breaking news that you have to beat another writer too. I think it’s quite unnecessary for you.
Yeah, big news scroops isn’t my forte. My stuff is more sober analysis and projection, lol.
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah
yeah, that’s another factor. No way for me to “twitter from the park” or something, not unless I upgrade my phone, which I have no desire to do.
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I would also point out that most of the responses so far are from people without twitter themselves which in itself might be an endorsement for twitter since that may be a demographic you aren’t hitting. The question is whether you personally want to engage that demographic.
good point
That’s a good point. My goal is to increase website traffic, but without increasing my already-thick workload. I want a free lunch I guess, lol.
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions
also my last point on the Twitter thing, the way SBN is set up now you can link your SBN with a Twitter account so it auto links to your twitter. You don’t necessarily have to use the twitter account other than a place to post links to the site. Then as you get more comfortable with it you decide what you want to do from there.
Yes
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...
by Kinslerhomer on Jul 12, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I actually think this would be good for you
Its a great way to stay in contact with your followers (and for someone like you, you have tons). It also allows you to stay in contact with out people in your industry.
But basically if your at the ball park and you see something you want to tell people about, you post it on your twitter, and everyone who follows you would see it, where now, I would have to come here, see a headline i want to check out and then click and see what its about.
Its really just more of a mobile/instant version of a lot of what you do on your blog.

yah
Yeah, these are the positives. Still thinking on it.
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I don't have internet on my phone either
accidently thought I had a free month of it after I renewed and got a new phone, well I got hit with a 110 dollar bill. I got it shut off and could careless about it, might get a laptop for next year while going back to school and for games.
you dont need internet on your phone for twitter
you just need text messaging…. you send a text message to the twitter phone number and it auto posts it on your twitter, and you can subscribe to certain people you follow if you want their upodates to come straight to your phone.
Check out my baseball analysis blog FANalytics
mediocre. But the commercials are super annoying

good personality, not attractive
But, as some of us know, personality can make up for other negatives:)
some trivia
In one of those ads is the sister of Leanna Creel (Tori) from Saved By The Bell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itDejkU20Ig (the blonde)
so what happens
if it gets rained out?
finish tomorrow or something?
it’s a lot better than the crappy softball game
"If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?"
game
it sounds like they are going to try and get it in
by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions
True or False
Will Heyward, Montero, and Stanton make their MLB debut next year?
Yes for Heyward and Montero, no for Stanton
I think the strikeouts are going to be a big problem from here out
True or False
Do we get a full futures game today?
What inning would Castro come in for Flowers in?
Cause I do have errands to run, so I was thing I could go now and come back in two hours just in time for Castro
by byronlhsdrmr on Jul 12, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions
it's gonna be a rain out
15 minutes they are deciding on the game via BA
100 miles north or south they would be playing right now
that rain band just has stayed over the city
What about if they play it Wednesday?
?
Check out my baseball analysis blog FANalytics
or follow me on twitter
the TV broadcast on ESPN has been repeating the same recorded message each commercial break of last year’s game since the rain delay started. i don’t think they’ve updated it at all with any new weather related information.

gotcha
color me gullible then…any official word yet?
by Michael Cave on Jul 12, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions
i'm not gonna wait and watch
i’m going out and playing some softball with about 16 people in a nice 75 degree sunny day, one of the best looking days in the NE all year
wait
I’ve been taking this opportunity to do Rotowire minor league updates. I do at least 30 of these a week. I want to get a head start this week because I’m also updating the Rotowire Top 100 this week, a time-consuming task.
True or False
Hanley Ramirez will be a HOF SS?
yes
perfect combo of a great bat and a team that doesn’t care about defense
Spectacular!
Now I get to eat my cake and eat it too, as I just walked in the door from the Cubs-Cards game . . .is the restarted Futures Game going to be on ESPN or ESPN2? Will it be shown at all?
7 innings
better than none – i wonder if i’ll still get to see bumgardner
"If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?"
Question for John
You seemed intrigued by Mock before the season and now he’s being inserted into the Nats rotation (Detwiler down). What do you make of Mock’s recent run of dominance in AAA?
47.1 IP, 34 H, 8 BB, 46 K, 1.52 ERA
I guess no Tazawa
I’m sure he warmed up before the rain delay and they didn’t want to send him back out there…
then the gun shut down
and the next pitch was 95
