The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

Heisey

One of the interesting players in this game is former 17th rounder Chris Heisey, who has put up one of the more impressive stat lines in the entire minor leagues. Widely seen as a potential 4th outfielder type before the year, the 24-year-old raked in AA (.347/.426/.572, 13/14 SB, 34 BB/34 K) and has carried that to AAA (14 gms, .365/.386/.654, 2/2 SB).

Are you a believer in the breakout and what would be his current grade? I believe it was C+ entering the year.

by rdf8585 on Jul 12, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

Heisey

He reminds me of Ryan Spilborghs. 5 solid tools, a solid approach, and solid defense — but nothing spectacular. That still makes him really valuable. That said, I had high hopes for Spilborghs and he has been a bit of a disappointment this year. So we’ll see if Heisey can translate similar potential into big league success.

I’d give Heisey a B grade right now. I think he should definitely contribute at the MLB level but probably lacks the ceiling of the best prospects in the game. Just my opinion though…

heisey

I like the Spillborghs comp. Logical.

me and my friend made a bet

we both drafted 3 hitters and 4 pitchers…we add up total bases and Ks. Whose evers team has more, buys the other a beer.

I took:
heyward
lawrie
tillman
matusz
parker
chris carter
feliz

he took:

wallace
heisley
escobar
tazawa
bumgarner
chacin
drabek

tillman

I really like the fact that the Orioles are giving Tillman as much time in Triple-A as the are. nice curveball!

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

It is a little scary how good the AL East could be in a couple of years with all the talent that is coming from the O’s and Rays farm systems and the amount of money the Yanks and Sox are willing to spend.

by yondaime4 on Jul 12, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

he really

does have a heck of a curve

by miraclemets on Jul 12, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

he wasnt very impressive, only throwing one CB for a strike, didnt command the change was was 88-91..obviously only one inning though

Liddi out of Italy…not a guy I’ve ever had a really good feeling for either way. Will he hit outside of high desert?

tillm

Tillman looks tight. Nervous?

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

Yes. If a guy is “tight” and overthrowing, it can cut into their velocity as well as their command.

Cuban guys…would you invest a lot in Cuban players?

They just said he was 19. Ha!

by sunking1056 on Jul 12, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

the Braves have several now don’t they? With Linares in the Carolina league also. They are always a little old, but you have to think Canizares would be useful for someone in the majors.

Ok, now we’re talking. I love this guy. On tv it looks like he’s slimmed down a bit. too.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

With as much as has been written about his inability to stay at C, I was expecting Prince Fielder’s body. Montero doesn’t look nearly as thick as I expected

I would be talking about Wallace’s pick at third, relating that to his defensive questions, rather than focusing on Montero

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

Not a bad play by Wallace from third

He looked a bit awkward and it was slow moving, but still a good play

I live in Syracuse

So, I have a IL team, but the IL stinks. I was excited when the Nationals first signed on, then Zimmerman and many others skipped. Plus my favorite team is the Astros, so I never get a chance to see any of their players live. I just wanted a peek at Jason Castro for a couple innings.

by byronlhsdrmr on Jul 12, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

I missed Castro last year because I was too lazy to get to Oneonta for NYPA ball

What do you think of the Pitkan kid on Tri-City(Astros). I hate going to syracuse for baseball, such a dump of a stadium.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 12, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't argue with the stadium comment, but we are getting DMB to play there this summer...

I haven’t paid much attention to Tri-City this year, since they have few guys worth seeing (Kemp and ?) but, as far as I can tell he’s the best pitcher on that squad. I’ll have to go see them when they’re nearby and do some scouting though.

by byronlhsdrmr on Jul 12, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I scouted Graham Hicks of Vermont on Thursday night

Needs more consistancy with his fastball, ranged between 86-89 and popped off a 93. Good breaking pitches that are both above average, and a decent changeup at 81-82. The kid could also add about 40-50 lbs to his frame as he is the skinniest pitcher I have ever seen.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 12, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I was looking at the gun that Jack McGeary was using

I was sitting behind homeplate with about 10 pitchers and 4 or 5 scouts which is surprising for a NYPA game.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 12, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too

Yeah..even if the Nats sigfn Strasburg…I bet we dont see him..Hell even Detwiler skipped Syrcuse over(so far)..lots of baseball within driving distance though. twitter

So, should I hook up with Twitter or not? I have to admit, it sounds like a really stupid and useless product to me. But a lot of people seem to like it. Should I give in and sign up?

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

It's okay, but I use it significantly less than Facebook

It’s basically giving out messages of what’s going on and where your going to people who follow you on there.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 12, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly I feel the same way as you, but it is so popular at this point for what you are doing it is almost a no brainer.

by yondaime4 on Jul 12, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't give in.

I don’t see what you gain from Twitter… other than hearing that the rain could stop in a half hour. But, if it doesn’t, it’s a big let down. Not worth it.

twitter

I already feel overstretched as it is. My cellphone is not intenet capable, so I wouldn’t be able to use it on the road anyway. But would it boost traffic and attention to the website?

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the site is enough

It’s not like twitter is going to allow you to get out more information and the stuff you post really isn’t time sensitive or breaking news that you have to beat another writer too. I think it’s quite unnecessary for you.

by was385 on Jul 12, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

twitter

Yeah, big news scroops isn’t my forte. My stuff is more sober analysis and projection, lol.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It certainly won’t hurt, but not having a web capable phone makes it less workable.

by yondaime4 on Jul 12, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

yeah, that’s another factor. No way for me to “twitter from the park” or something, not unless I upgrade my phone, which I have no desire to do.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I would also point out that most of the responses so far are from people without twitter themselves which in itself might be an endorsement for twitter since that may be a demographic you aren’t hitting. The question is whether you personally want to engage that demographic.

by yondaime4 on Jul 12, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

good point

That’s a good point. My goal is to increase website traffic, but without increasing my already-thick workload. I want a free lunch I guess, lol.

by John Sickels on Jul 12, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

oh I totally understand, but you know, more traffic = more book sales :-)

by yondaime4 on Jul 12, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

also my last point on the Twitter thing, the way SBN is set up now you can link your SBN with a Twitter account so it auto links to your twitter. You don’t necessarily have to use the twitter account other than a place to post links to the site. Then as you get more comfortable with it you decide what you want to do from there.

I actually think this would be good for you

Its a great way to stay in contact with your followers (and for someone like you, you have tons). It also allows you to stay in contact with out people in your industry.

But basically if your at the ball park and you see something you want to tell people about, you post it on your twitter, and everyone who follows you would see it, where now, I would have to come here, see a headline i want to check out and then click and see what its about.

Its really just more of a mobile/instant version of a lot of what you do on your blog.

you dont need internet on your phone for twitter

you just need text messaging…. you send a text message to the twitter phone number and it auto posts it on your twitter, and you can subscribe to certain people you follow if you want their upodates to come straight to your phone.
