First pick ever
Don't believe the lies Bill!!!! look at the sparkly ERA!!! Sparkly, Sparkly!!! - McCovey Chronicles
Leake?
I’ve only heard that he is one of the safest picks. Am I wrong?
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
I just now saw this.
Questioning Leake is silly. He’s got all kinds of tools. If he flounders as a pitcher, he can be turned into a hitter with strong defense. He’s a very talented kid.

No offense
But Sanchez, Tate, and Hobgood are high school kids who have not, comparatively speaking, received much press; what exactly are you basing your claims on? Have you seen the guys play? Been following them for years?
These guys have been personally worked out by professional scouts and closely scrutinized for months, let’s give them the benefit of the doubt?
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Chad James to Marlins
I really liked the pick. They do a very good job of developing prep pitchers. It works quite nicely for them, considering his upside.
ahhh, I don't think any of those guys.

Nice pick for the Cards
Damn them.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
I think the Cards will sign him, if Miller would have fallen any farhter
I don’t think he could of been signed, unless it was NYY or Bos.

Huh
Astros grab Jiovanni Mier . . .gotta think he was high on Minnesota’s list.
While I’m not sure who the Twins take, I’ll be surprised if the White Sox don’t end up with one of James Paxton or Rex Brothers.
I think the Twins were going pitcher anyway
Mier has question’s about the bat
and
Dinkelman, Tolleson, Plouffe, Singleton, Santana are a lot of middle infielders in their system anyways…just no stars.

Suprise Gibson
Don't believe the lies Bill!!!! look at the sparkly ERA!!! Sparkly, Sparkly!!! - McCovey Chronicles
I'm kinda pissed right now
I would have rather had Rex Brothers or even Tanner Scheppers from ST. Paul Saints.
ugh…. big gamble

yeah, I’ve changed my midset from yesterday…

Yeah, I like that one......
Nice gamble at 22 IMO.
Scheppers
Odds on the Yankees taking him? Money no issue, and they don’t seem to care about injuries as much as upside. Please no Heckathorn…
Personally I am not high on Scheppers. Too much risk for his price tag IMO.

Gibson finished the season topping out at 87
I’m not going to call it a great pick just yet.

Just saying he doesn’t sound like a douche, unlike Matzek.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
well, he is extremely intelligent
I guess I’m just sick of the Twins drafting “smart” players if you’re not capable of graduating form Harvard or Princeton then the Twins don’t want you.
if you’re a pitcher that is, thats the feeling I’m getting right now.

Matzek
He dropped in the fact Oregon is going to let him play 1B. Nicely done Mr. Boras, way to get that price tag up.
I wonder if Colorado took him as a reach figuring they have two first round picks so not signing one of them will not be as devastating. If they do not sign him they get the compensation pick in 2010 (which as of now appears to have a little more talent.)
by bl on Jun 9, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions
he had a fracutred arm
hence the drop in velocity… give him a break.
"If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?"
Mister Signable
Okay tools with decent bat, good makeup. And a relatively low price tag, all things considered.
Davidson and Arnet on the board for the Brewers
Paxton too. Come on, BC.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
The drop in velocity was obviously due to the injury. I saw him in person. He was a legit 91-92 and the night I saw him the slider was FILTHY. I do not even recall a foul ball off the slider that night (vs Oklahoma, a damn good hitting team.) He finished that game with 15 K’s and what should have been on earned run. (Horrible scoring decision to award a hit that led to two runs.
Many doubted the Revere and Gutierriez picks at the time too.
I LOVE this pick for Minnesota.
Trout is from Jersey......
So it was theoretically an easy trip. Although I am sure traffic was bad……
I want Scheppers for the Cubs
that is all … doubt he makes it … but yeah, I’m good with taking that gamble …
I’m just glad Pollock is off the board … I’m open to Tim Wheeler (don’t think he’s come off yet, I just got back in), some lefty arms, if Wilken wants to gamble on a prep MI, I’m good too … a lot of options…
I think there's a good chance Scheppers falls
but I doubt they’d want to give him the money he wants. I also like Wheeler, and wouldn’t mind Brothers, Paxton or Oliver.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad

I think he’s a bit of an overdraft for the Mariners. I was hoping Scheppers or Skaggs.
thats gotta be a financial selection there for Seattle

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jun 9, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
On raw talent, yes
But if they wanted a good up-the-middle player who wasn’t going to break the bank, where else were they going to go?
If you can’t find anybody better, he’s the guy.
overdraft
i have a hard time finding anyone in the late first as an overdraft. For example, the other day, John Manuel or Jim Callis (forgot which one) said Franklin was a solid first rounder.
In saying that, I thought they would go with an arm here. Can understand passing on Scheppers if they are worried, but there are some other arms.
its taken almost 3 hours for the first round - 32 picks
and they are going through the 3rd round – 111 picks; i think either they will only get one minute a pick soon or they will be picking into the morning.
it will speed up once the camera's are off

Just adding to an already strong system
Lot of high upside, high risk arms to go with the somewhat more developed bats. Could be a really, really good team in a couple of years.
Just to let everyone know - the ESPN Draft Wrap-Up show is horrible

Why should this year be any different than the last few? Really, aside from Tom Kotchman’s kids each year, they’ve been something of a circus with a lot of their picks, from their affinity for football players to their seeming willfulness in taking guys they simply aren’t going to sign. Eddie Bane is one of the most over-compensated people in the game.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jun 10, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Right
Typically, at this stage of the draft they would call the kid/his agent to see if they can work something out. Im sure they did their homework and have a number in mind they can afford for Renfroe. In the teens the Sox are more likely to draft a guy without knowing their demands or if they can be signed. They really havent had any issues signing early picks.
They actually called Rich Poythress and were trying to work something out (offering him 1st round money, too!) when Seattle jumped in and grabbbed him without concern for signability:
Rich Poythress’ phone couldn’t keep up with the calls that began flooding in from teams as the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft wrapped up Tuesday night.
With teams checking in on availability and signability, the Seattle Mariners grabbed the Greenbrier High School product with the 51st overall pick and the second pick in the second round.
“It was a crazy last 10 minutes for me,” Poythress said via phone. “Seattle had (picks) 27 and 33, but then I had the Red Sox calling about first-round money in the third round, but the Mariners pulled the trigger when I was on the phone.”

You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.
I like him
But he’s a low upside guy, throws only in the high 80s, but he has gotten results in three years at Louisville. Struggled in the Cape Cod League. I’ve heard he projects to be like Mark Redman.

Best players not drafted?
Obviously Stassi tops the list. Otherwise:
Luke Bailey
Sam Dyson
Kendal Volz
Colton Cain
Zack von Rosenberg
Madison Younginer
Brody Colvin
Kent Matthes
Angelo Songco
Keyvius Sampson
Chris Dwyer
Ryan Buch
Jeff Malm
Jeff Kobernus
Brooks Raley
Those guys were all 2nd round or higher on the mocks here or Andy Seiler’s. Any others I’m missing?
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
Draftees
Kobernus was drafted in round 2. Most of the college guys you listed should be off the board early later today. Raley probably doesn’t sign, at this point he’s got too much leverage for not enough anticipated return. Ditto for Dwyer.
A lot of the prep players probably floated some bonus demands late in the game that are chiefly responsible for their drop. I think the Rangers or maybe the Astros make a strong push to get Cain in the next few rounds. Younginer and Malm both have strong college commitments – I’ll predict that both drop a long way and neither signs. Not sure about Colvin, but he was an LSU commit and he knows how highly he was rated, have to believe that he wants at least supplemental round money to sign and maybe even first rounder money. The rest I don’t have a clue on, maybe one of the draftniks knows.
I love the Sox' first pick of Fuentes
Apparently theyd been hot on him for a long time, scouting him for years and Theo et al flew down two weeks ago. I imagine they thought they were going to get him later but his stock blew up the last few days and they wanted him bad enough they decided to go with him at #28.
Stassi, I feel they genuinely had interest in with that pick…. but they wanted Fuentes more. I wouldnt be shocked to see them grab Stassi later. I think he’s in a real free fall now. His demands are damn high for this point and… well, a pre-arranged deal could certainly have been arranged since the team and Massi’s agent both were getting indications he was going to drop. If they have a pre-arranged deal he could very well be demanding something ridiculous or he goes to college when teams call now.
i love the Red Sox draft in general
Renfroe and Wilson stand out … I liked Alex Wilson quite a bit and think he could move fast as a pen arm, or they could slow him down and see if he can start. Renfroe and Fuentes are both raw, but the Red Sox are one of the organizations where you sorta feel okay about something like that.
Not a huge fan of
Fuentes…
Love the tools, love the athleticism, hate the fact that he swings at EVERYTHING. He is not going to be a prototypical lead off man. He has “0” plate discipline, He is a guy that is going to swing away, and have an OBP driven by his Batting Average.
Does that make him a bad pick, not late in the first. Does that make him the future lead off man for the Sox… VERY unlikely. Then again Ellsbury is the same exact type of player…
He's only 18
Im not too worried about his approach at this point. He’s a carribean teenager… it would only be remarkable if he DIDN’T swing at everything.
Haven't seen Fuentes play
Isn’t he projected like an Engel Beltre?
Not quite as toolsy
less power potential a little more speed worse zone adjustment.
I still don’t think Fuentes was the BPA at that point as it is, much less the best OF at that point

Don't really get
Why teams drafted “signable guys” in the third round instead of taking some chances on some guys with large bonus demands, since the third round draft picks are “protected” meaning you get compensated if a player fails to sign.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Best guess
While those picks ARE protected, delaying the addition of talent to your farm system is rarely a good idea . . .having a bare cupboard in the farm is the sort of thing that gets scouting directors, farm directors, and even GMs fired. So most teams, recognizing that overall talent (and also, the talent level of the players they’re targeting) is relatively comparable from year to year, would much rather have pieces to work with sooner than later.
It looks like some teams tried to make sure that they got some solid/easy signs out of the way in the early rounds. For example, the Red Sox probably still really want Max Stassi . . .but in retrospect, they would have looked silly if they had taken him at 28 and passed up more signable players. After all, the guy is still on the board and can be had along with those other players that the Red Sox wanted earlier. This way, they can get guys that they A) want and B) will definitely get, and then they can take a look at those tough signs at a point where the downside to not signing the pick is much less (and yes, having to wait a year to add a comparable talent to the system is a significant downside).
There is never a shortage of signability guys.
Isn't Austin Maddox still out there?
