Sure sounds like Crow may fall

I wonder who pops him if he keeps dropping … how bad could his demands be (saw a blurb somewhere that said Crow’s demands were high). If Detroit passes at 9 … then … ?

There are rumors that he would cut the Royals a hometown deal

Not sure I believe that, but it would be awesome to have him.

Message board fluff

A few posters at a Royals board say they recall Crow saying he would give them a discount when he was at Mizzou and that he grew up a Royals fan

what's up buddy

Yeah it looks like it, but teams also seem to follow other teams’ lead in situations like this, and I’m not sure I see the Royals bucking the trend here of passing on the big names. We’ll see.

this is a pretty interesting draft

i’m starting to shudder at the thought of matzek and crow falling to nyy/bos

by daveh33 on Jun 9, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

I gotta think

someone is willing to spend before that … aren’t the cardinals looking for a lefty? … if Matzek falls … I gotta think he’d be at the top of their list. Maybe Crow and Cleveland? That sounds like a match.

bad picks right now

Pirates with a 2nd round catcher
Braves with a late first pitcher

by Bravesin07 on Jun 9, 2009 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

is it that bad

There seemed to be a lot of suggestions late that Storen had moved up into the mid-first range potentially. And in the NAts case, with the likely payout they’ll be given one Strasburg fella, I can understand going for a guy like Storen if he comes cheaper.

by toonsterwu on Jun 9, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Jenkins better

I thought they were pretty locked into him at #10?

by daveh33 on Jun 9, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope

They’ve been known to be on several different guys over the last week or so, with Storen being a slight favorite over Jenkins.

so, who's the most signable HS pitcher left at 11

that the Rockies will take (BA blog)? Does that mean Shelby Miller, considering he’s supposedly a tiny bit cheaper than Matzek or Turner?

by toonsterwu on Jun 9, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

Good question

But no, I think Miller is still well out of the range they’re thinking. I’m thinking more towards Garrett Gould, Tyler Skaggs, somebody like that.

by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Gould or Skaggs at pick #11 overall? what?

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jun 9, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

What?

If they want a HS pitcher who’s both talented and signable, those seem like good options. toonsterwu mentioned James as well there.

You can’t just conjure an arm out of thin air. The pool of available players isn’t changing.

but all the late rumors (BA for example) seem to point that the top 8 being pretty much set. In Hobgood’s case, it seems like a situation where teams might’ve had him higher than fans for some reason. After all, seemed like the Rockies had Hobgood as their top option, if you buy the rumors.

Latest update on Rocks/Royals from Callis

Nothing new on the Rocks front – says signable prepster, but does throw in Rex Brothers.

Says Jenkins on Royals, with Green/Myers as thoughts. A’s with Green, Scheppers, or Matzek.

and crow keeps falling … Cleveland?

by toonsterwu on Jun 9, 2009 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

Didn't the Royals really like Myers?

They had him in for a workout just the other day and really liked him, IIRC . . .but maybe they weren’t anticipating Jenkins being on the board?

by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Royals have been linked to Myers and Green a lot

Yes, supposedly they loved his workout and have really been looking to add a catcher or shortstop

Both do want a lot of money

Green obviously wants a lot, and the buzz suggests Myers is looking for $2M or maybe more . . .maybe they think Jenkins will be an easy sign?

I hope that's not the reasoning

They don’t have another pick til the third round – you think they could overpay. They did shell out $9 mill to Kyle Farnsworth – they can’t pay $6 mill to Aaron Crow, Jacob Turner, Mike Leake or Grant Green?

I'm not so sure

It all comes down to a budgeting issue.

Teams like the Royals have budgeted big numbers for the draft and it is starting to pay off. The Giants are in a big market could have gone with a bigger player. The Brewers offered Sabathia $100mm last year, they can afford to draft a signability risk.

It all comes down to priorities.

by backtocali on Jun 9, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Certainty is a big deal

Knowing that you’re definitely going to bring in talent is a really big deal, especially when we’re talking about the PR-related concerns that come with a first round pick. You can always find signability guys later, whether it’s a round later or ten, but you can’t have a first rounder back and losing out on a safe sign because you risked your pick on a pricy teenager who you couldn’t get a deal done with anyways is a bad way to build your system.

Quote from Huntington:

“We looked at the draft overall and put together a process that is best going to allow us to allocate the tremendous resources Bob Nutting has given us. This draft is going to be judged on 50 picks, and this was not a year — in our minds — to spend a huge chunk of our budget on one player. This is going to be spread over multiple players. We have a chance to flood our system with quality prospects.”

I guess not being cheap, just being selective. Good year for that I suppose.

Yeah.

If they take a couple of above-slot guys in the next couple of rounds, especially, then it will make a lot more sense.

by rockchalk on Jun 9, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

especially if they sign Sano

by alskor on Jun 9, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

I guess we’ll have to wait and see. It’s a bold strategy, one that could really pay off big if they do it right. If they save $4M by taking Sanchez over, say, Matzek, and use that money to buy Sano and then two over-slot signs for $1M, for example, that’s actually pretty sweet.

The Pirates seem to be putting a strong emphasis on building quality depth, and I have to say, their GM seems to be very grounded and focused on his own development philosophies rather than making the moves he doesn’t want to, even though they would be in line with consensus opinion.

Wow, two bats for Arizona

Yeah, but there are better outfielders than Pollock on the board

And I thought they were going to take one bat and one arm.

Some of that, but

True CFs are hard to find, and Pollock has the ability to be that with a solid bat. A nice move for a team that’s always more comfortable with college players.

Glad he’s gone.

I saw him play many times last year, nice player

but he only grades out as an average major leaguer

Im with you on that sentiment

by backtocali on Jun 9, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

very very happy that pollock didn't make it to the Cubs

didn’t care for him … i don’t like Brett Jackson, but I preferred gambling on Jackson to taking Pollock

And from me

This means the Cubs will be more likely to take friggin’ Brett Jackson.
