Sure sounds like Crow may fall
I wonder who pops him if he keeps dropping … how bad could his demands be (saw a blurb somewhere that said Crow’s demands were high). If Detroit passes at 9 … then … ?
There are rumors that he would cut the Royals a hometown deal
Not sure I believe that, but it would be awesome to have him.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Really? That would be awesome
Is that just message board fluff or has someone reputable mentioned it?

Message board fluff
A few posters at a Royals board say they recall Crow saying he would give them a discount when he was at Mizzou and that he grew up a Royals fan

Hmmm, well it is interesting
and I know for a fact he grew up a Royals fan. We’ll see what happens shortly.

howdy eazy
sure looks like the royals are going to have much better options than could’ve been anticipated a week or so ago.
what's up buddy
Yeah it looks like it, but teams also seem to follow other teams’ lead in situations like this, and I’m not sure I see the Royals bucking the trend here of passing on the big names. We’ll see.

this is a pretty interesting draft
i’m starting to shudder at the thought of matzek and crow falling to nyy/bos
I gotta think
someone is willing to spend before that … aren’t the cardinals looking for a lefty? … if Matzek falls … I gotta think he’d be at the top of their list. Maybe Crow and Cleveland? That sounds like a match.
Yankees and Redsox will load up again
and then hopefully i’ll see them in the NYPA
hmmm i will be able to see him in oneonta
could have talked to porcello back in 2007 down there if I knew anything about going to minor league games then. He warmed up for a week down there apparently the new GM told me down there last summe.
bad picks right now
Pirates with a 2nd round catcher
Braves with a late first pitcher
is it that bad
There seemed to be a lot of suggestions late that Storen had moved up into the mid-first range potentially. And in the NAts case, with the likely payout they’ll be given one Strasburg fella, I can understand going for a guy like Storen if he comes cheaper.

so, who's the most signable HS pitcher left at 11
that the Rockies will take (BA blog)? Does that mean Shelby Miller, considering he’s supposedly a tiny bit cheaper than Matzek or Turner?
Good question
But no, I think Miller is still well out of the range they’re thinking. I’m thinking more towards Garrett Gould, Tyler Skaggs, somebody like that.
Gould or Skaggs at pick #11 overall? what?

chad james?
he’s probably in that next mix
Mayo’s latest Top 10: 1 SS; 2 Ackley; 3 Tate; 4 T-Sanch; 5 Hobgood; 6 Z-Wheel; 7 Minor; 8 A-White; 9 Matzke; 10 Storen – #MLBDraft

If Catcher Tony Sanchez went that high I’d be pretty darn surprised…
same goes with P-Matt Hobgood.
by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jun 9, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions
only time will tell
but all the late rumors (BA for example) seem to point that the top 8 being pretty much set. In Hobgood’s case, it seems like a situation where teams might’ve had him higher than fans for some reason. After all, seemed like the Rockies had Hobgood as their top option, if you buy the rumors.
Latest update on Rocks/Royals from Callis
Nothing new on the Rocks front – says signable prepster, but does throw in Rex Brothers.
Says Jenkins on Royals, with Green/Myers as thoughts. A’s with Green, Scheppers, or Matzek.
and crow keeps falling … Cleveland?
Didn't the Royals really like Myers?
They had him in for a workout just the other day and really liked him, IIRC . . .but maybe they weren’t anticipating Jenkins being on the board?
Royals have been linked to Myers and Green a lot
Yes, supposedly they loved his workout and have really been looking to add a catcher or shortstop
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Both do want a lot of money
Green obviously wants a lot, and the buzz suggests Myers is looking for $2M or maybe more . . .maybe they think Jenkins will be an easy sign?
I hope that's not the reasoning
They don’t have another pick til the third round – you think they could overpay. They did shell out $9 mill to Kyle Farnsworth – they can’t pay $6 mill to Aaron Crow, Jacob Turner, Mike Leake or Grant Green?
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
supposedly they are in on quite a few of the top latin prospects
which may cause them to take a guy who will sign for slot.
baseball rules.
A little surprising
If they’re going for signability in an arm, you think they’d be going withe m.o. of late years and grab one of those second-tier prep arms rather than the polished Jenkins.
Keith Law said the Brewers tried to negotiate an over-slot deal with one of the high-priced prep players
I wonder who it was. Very unusual for the Brewers.
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
Gotta think it was one of the arms
maybe Turner or Purke? I mean, if they go overslot, with the way the system is, gotta think it’s an arm, right?
They tend to like really live arms
Shelby Miller comes to mind here.
If Crow goes in mid teens, where is Scheppers in all this?

Strong?
The pitching is solid, but the bats just aren’t very impressive . . .just because a lot of pitchers may go in the first doesn’t mean they’re necessarily guys teams would like to take in the first, it just means that they’re the best of what’s available.
Can't wait to see how the Sanchez pick goes over in Pittsburgh

it’s not bad pick IF they spend the money elsewhere (later in the draft or international free agency).
Doesn't really matter
The McLouth trade may have been a good trade too, but the fans are pissed. A signability pick #4 overall is not going to make people happy.

man
This signability thing is out of control this year.
If I’m a fan of the Bucs Os or Giants, Im not too happy with my teams first round pick.
Wheres Turner, Crow and Matzek?
Disagree on the Giants
While I preferred Crow or Matzek, I don’t think Wheeler is an overdraft. O’s and Pirates fans should be pissed, though.
yes
Although will anything ever top Josh Vitters in 2007?
My theory...
The experience scarred him so horrifically that he went into a slump and needed a year and a half to get out of it.

Think teams are holding off on big top-10 bonuses...
in anticipation of spending more in later rounds of what is supposed to be more of a deep, not so top-heavy draft?
Very nice pick
Thought they may have gone for Green there..
I bet the Tigers take one of the big pitchers here and pay what they are asking. Porcello II (Matzek or Purke?)
disgrace
This draft is a joke so far.
MLB will have to fix this crap.
Bottom 10 teams are picking guys with less talent, b/c they’re more signable.
Looks like the Red Sox and Yankees will win again!
"In 1962 I was named Minor League Player of the Year. It was my second season in the Bigs." - Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker
I'm not so sure
It all comes down to a budgeting issue.
Teams like the Royals have budgeted big numbers for the draft and it is starting to pay off. The Giants are in a big market could have gone with a bigger player. The Brewers offered Sabathia $100mm last year, they can afford to draft a signability risk.
It all comes down to priorities.
Certainty is a big deal
Knowing that you’re definitely going to bring in talent is a really big deal, especially when we’re talking about the PR-related concerns that come with a first round pick. You can always find signability guys later, whether it’s a round later or ten, but you can’t have a first rounder back and losing out on a safe sign because you risked your pick on a pricy teenager who you couldn’t get a deal done with anyways is a bad way to build your system.
Detroit takes Turner
They’ve been connected with Turner for quite a while now, and apparently they weren’t swayed by any of the other names that dropped.
nah, Turner is excellent he is better than Purke in my opinion and probably Crow too, not Matzek though.

Kelly and Bard.
If KC can sign him, that's a good pick.
What are the odds Crow won’t sign two years in a row? At some point, he has to realize that it’s better to take a little bit less money to actually play in affiliated baseball, right?

Nice
They just showed that Mike Trout is at the draft . . .wearing a $2.5+ million suit.
Is Green a reach here if that's who Oakland takes?
He’s the highest ranked position player (I think), and the A’s could use a few of those, but the pitchers are probably better bets.

Is Reynolds quick enough to play 2B perhaps?
I mean he’ll be a FA by the time Borchering arrives…so…
On a related note
Borchering takes the lead in the “worst draft profile picture” race . . .is “Frankenstein” an acceptable comp for a prep player?
Quote from Huntington:
“We looked at the draft overall and put together a process that is best going to allow us to allocate the tremendous resources Bob Nutting has given us. This draft is going to be judged on 50 picks, and this was not a year — in our minds — to spend a huge chunk of our budget on one player. This is going to be spread over multiple players. We have a chance to flood our system with quality prospects.”
I guess not being cheap, just being selective. Good year for that I suppose.
Yeah.
If they take a couple of above-slot guys in the next couple of rounds, especially, then it will make a lot more sense.
Interesting
I guess we’ll have to wait and see. It’s a bold strategy, one that could really pay off big if they do it right. If they save $4M by taking Sanchez over, say, Matzek, and use that money to buy Sano and then two over-slot signs for $1M, for example, that’s actually pretty sweet.
The Pirates seem to be putting a strong emphasis on building quality depth, and I have to say, their GM seems to be very grounded and focused on his own development philosophies rather than making the moves he doesn’t want to, even though they would be in line with consensus opinion.
