I have a question — does the draft start at 6 or is it the telecast that starts at 6 and the actual first pick will be announced later?
Damn these timezones!

eh
Better than every other year, when it started at noon. The fact that there’s actual coverage is a plus. Much better than streaming a conference call over the internet.

Earlier!
They need to make it start earlier. I am off all day, but I have to wait until 6pm EST for it to start. It should start at 2pm EST so I can sit around all day and watch the draft and overeat.

high schoolers
Most of the high school first round guys are asking for huge money, even some previously considered signable….apparently the agents have upped their demands at the last minute.
Normally I don’t think this would be a big deal, but with the economy sour a lot of teams aren’t really happy about this. Expect more people to drop than just Purke and Tate now. And college guys could go higher than expected.

Where there are 2 schools of thought on Green
he either isn’t as good as he was thought to be during the Summer wooden bat leagues or he really did have a hand injury for the first half of the season last year that wasn’t enough to take him out of the lineup but was enough to hurt him in the field and the plate.
The 2 camps are pretty well split; if he had a hand injury why did they not tell everyone, vs. they played the hardest schedule in baseball and needed him in the lineup as another offensive threat, real or imaginary.

I meant Mike Minor
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems

Minor disagreements
I’m sure that’s part of it. We haven’t heard a peep about his bonus demands, leading me to think that he’s almost certainly willing to sign very quickly for slot, and maybe even underslot if he’s picked high enough. And the Reds are kind of cheap.
The complaints around Minor center around his ceiling . . .I think even those who like him don’t think he’s more than a 3 at this point. But he IS rather safe (and by safe I don’t mean a guarantee to perform, but in that you know exactly what you’re getting with him). If he’s, say, a No. 4 starter and can get to that level in a year or maybe a little more, that kind of certainty appeals a lot to teams that have financial and economic considerations in mind. Some teams don’t want to have to worry about risk, and BA doesn’t mind risk at all . . .but of course, they’re spending other people’s money here.
by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Green is a Boras client thus you can bet the farm on him NOT signing for underslot. The big thing is that if he starts to fall Boras will 100% demand an above-slot contract, babbling about Green being the #1 SS and a Top 10 talent and whatever else he wants to pull out of his ass. At that point does anyone even want to deal with that situation considering we’re talking about a prospect who may not even be able to stick at SS and who displayed next to no power at all this year?

I would not be suprised to see a team take a shot at him
in the 1st and give him a complete medical workup and a take it or leave it offer over slot but not hugely so. It would have to be a team that has a fairly deep system and enough cash to be willing to pony up the money if he will sign but be OK talent wise in system if he won’t or his medicals are horrible.

What’s the strategy here? Obviously looking to get more money, but why make a change right before the draft?
This is what is kind of annoying about the draft – it gets manipulated, and the players aren’t drafted by ability. Either get a slotting system in place or just make them all free agents.

I thought Kipins was a defensive all speed CF. Why are people so high on him?

I'm not high on him
He’s a lot like AJ Pollock, imo, without the speed.
I think he will probably be a good hitter, gap to gap with not a heck of a lot of power, but if he isnt playing 2B, he doesnt really hold a lot of value past 4th outfielder.

No one doubts that Scheppers has the best arm in the draft other than Strasburg, but because of last year’s shoulder problem he could go anywhere from 5 to 25.
Am I to take that as Scheppers will not fall past the Angels, or did “5 to 25” just sound euphonious?

Quantifying signing a Draftee Earlier than Later
What kind of difference in value do you think their is between signing a draftee right after the draft or negotiating till August? How much more valuable is it to a team to sign a player earlier and allow them to get into the system faster? Allowing a player to play rookie play his first season till having to wait till 2010 to play his first stint at organized ball.
I think a good example is the Cardinals Brett Wallace. He was signed quickly and than went on to have a good second half of baseball and than a good season of Winterball in AZ. What kind of value did the Cardinal’s gain by signing Wallace earlier and getting that first half season out of the way? It could be argued that by doing it they will get Wallace a half season sooner if they didn’t.
My whole point is that if additional value is gained by signing a player earlier. Wouldn’t a draftee before he actually starts playing top value be immediately after he got drafted? So does it make sense to over pay a draftee early to get him playing soon as possible?
I don’t know the answer to these questions but would like to hear your guys thoughts.

according to Keith Law his secondary stuff was putrid and people were think he's gonna be a bullpen guy
by Bravesin07 on Jun 9, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, he might
His secondary stuff is not “putrid”. He might be a bullpen guy because teams aren’t sure about the third pitch yet . . .he throws a splitter as his change, which understandably doesn’t thrill a lot of people. Not that it couldn’t be scrapped for a real change, but then you start wondering if he’s really the guy you want then. But the fastball is quite good (probably a bit more lively than Balester’s) and his slider gets good reviews all over the place.
Law has some good ideas, but he’s wrong on this one.
by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think people are usually referencing
his lack of options beyond a fastball/slider, and few pitchers can survive on just two options. I could be wrong, but remember watching unc games this year and, to my untrained eye, and based on the commentary, the slider looked good (if not slider, then a breaking ball of some sorts).
by toonsterwu on Jun 9, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another big overdraft here
Do the O’s have finance issues they are worried about? Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I like Hobgood but not in the upper half of the first round. Wheeler, Matzek, Purke and Turner, as well as Crow are all better options here with the O’s, as would Green or even Borchering.
by backtocali on Jun 9, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The problem
Everybody is so frickin expensive. It’s a draft where the alternatives to the alternatives are asking for like more than twice as much as you’d want to give them, and where Tanner Scheppers and his duct-taped-together shoulder starts sounding like a reasonable draft pick just because his demands are being dwarfed.
If they like Hobgood, then good for them. They’ll have a player that they like and they won’t have to worry about crazy contract demands . . .they can hold off on signability decisions until later in the draft.
by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like it
Hobgood is not a top five talent, but he’s a very polished solid arm that they can sign easily. With the other arms in their organization, I think this is a pretty sound strategy, and they can try to sign someone overslot later on.
