Stephen Perez-My favorite 2009 draft prospect

I don't see how Perez doesn't get enough hype as a player heading into the 2009 draft. The switch hitting shortstop was only ranked #122 on Baseball America's top 200 draft prospect list.

Perez is that rare switch hitter who can hit well from both sides of the plate. Out of all his tools, the only "average" one out of them is speed. He can field, has power, and can flat out rake period. If he signs, which may not happen,  his ceiling could be that of Hanley Ramirez, maybe even with a tad more power! This is all my opinion, but I would like to see others thoughts on Stephen Perez.

Furthermore, I would love to here Andy, with that great MLB Bonus Baby blog of his, to comment.

I like him a lot too

Switch hitter, decent pop, good upside, great baseball IQ – seems like a fine 3rd/4th round pick. In fact, I took him in our mock!

I think he's 3/4 rounder

I’m not as high on him as you are. I don’t think he has Hanley Ramirez upside, as I don’t see him stealing that many bases or hitting that many homeruns. He does, however, have good baseball IQ, which I like in a player and of course he’s a switch hitter with the ability to hit from both sides, which you have to like. Will he really have the range to play shortstop long term? I don’t buy it. I think he deserves a good look, I think he’s a third rounder, afterall, but I’m not expecting him to.

I don't see the Hanley comp. at all

I agree he sounds like he has some upside but he’s 5-11, 175 or so. He isn’t going to be a massive power hitter. He may end up at second base from what I have read and one scout said his bat was suspect.
If I had to come up with a comp, it’d be Luis Rivas. Like Rivas, I think he has the tendency to try to be a power hitter when he should be hitting the ball to all fields. I’d guess he’ll be a 5th rder, sliding a little due to signability and will go on to Miami.
