He has really settled in lately. In has last five starts:

30.2 IP, 19 H, 6 ER, 12 BB, 26 K.

The walks are too high, but the rest of those numbers are pretty nice for someone who was pretty raw entering the season.

From BP's daily update:
Hitting the ground running

Jemile Weeks, 2B, Athletics (High-A Stockton)
Sunday’s stats: 2-for-2, 2B, RBI, 3 BB, SB

After missing the first six weeks of the season while getting healthy, Oakland’s 2008 first-round pick has been doing it all in the California League, hitting for average (.344), drawing walks (eight in 10 games for a .453 on-base percentage), showing surprising power (three home runs in 44 at-bats as part of a .591 slugging percentage), and now finally using his wheels to steal his first base of the year. Basically, all systems are go.

I really think he’s going to be a stud.

More Weeks

Saw him play in San Jose last week…looked very impressive. The plate discipline was solid and he roped a few balls. Just hope he doesn’t get overhyped like his brother.

Hope so

Great to see he’s off to a good start. Hopefully the A’s will finally have their answer at 2B…

by purppride1 on Jun 8, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Long-term answer...

…is Weeks, hopefully. Don’t think they need an answer right now with Adam Kennedy hitting an impressive .339/.410/.532.

Cardenas

Anyone know why they have Cardenas playing 2nd when this kid is just a couple years behind him? It’s not like either position is blocked in the bigs. It just seems kinda silly to convert Cardenas when he was a more than adequate SS, from what I recall.

by rutgersjpm on Jun 8, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Convert?

Cardenas WAS a 2b who was being converted to SS wasn’t he guys? No inside knowledge but the A’s may have decided that Cardenas wasn’t going to be an acceptable SS after giving him a look there and, besides Weeks has only been playing again for a week and a half, not really enough time to be worrying about who is ahead of who yet.

Not really an issue having 2 potential, good, big league 2b in your system anyways right. These things get sorted out.

by casejud on Jun 8, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes and No

Cardenas was a SS in high school when he was drafted by the Phillies. They tried to let him stick at the position, but the general consensus was that he isn’t going to be a long-term solution at that position, and moved him to second. After being traded to Oakland last summer, Cardenas was moved back to SS, maybe just to give him a fair chance and see what he could do, but has again been moved back to 2B.

Not that I have any knowledge on the subject, but my guess is that, at best, he’s a stop-gap solution at short, but has the potential to be a better-than-average defender at second. Conventionally, his bat translates very very well to playing second base, but not all that well elsewhere, as he has yet to show that he can hit for adequate power, which would facilitate a move to a corner position (such as LF).

by ajake57 on Jun 9, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Disagree

Obviously his bat looks better at 2B than it does at other positions, but I wouldn’t say that he couldn’t contribute positively elsewhere . . .he’d just be more of a BA/OBP guy with solid gap power.

by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I may have misspoken

I didn’t mean to say he couldn’t play anywhere else, because the kid can flat out hit. But he lacks the power that is typically associated with a person who profiles as a corner position player. So really what I meant is that I think the A’s would rather leave him at second, in order to maximize his value. I do agree, though, that he could contribute offensively at another position.

Rich Harden

He’s making his rehab start tonight for Iowa. Should be a fun game with the wind blowing in.

cubs

Iowa beat Round Rock, 10-3.

Sam Fuld – 2/5, R, 3B, K, SB.
Rich Harden – 4.2 ip, 3 h, 2 r (1 earned), 2bb, 6 K’s.
James Russell – 1.1 ip, 4 h, 1 R.
Justin Berg – 1 ip, 1 h, 1 bb, 1 K, 1 HBP.

tennessee won 3-2 against chattanooga with a run in the bottom of the 10th.

Alessandro Maestri – 3 ip, 2 K’s, WP, HB.
Tony Thomas – 1/4, R, 2 K’s, SB, E.
James Adduci – 3/5, SB, Assist. Too bad there isn’t any power. Well rounded guy in other areas.
Tyler Colvin – 1/3, Assist.

Daytona played 2 with Jupiter, losing Game 1 3-1 in 7. Nothing much to note – a bunch of 0’fers. They won game 2, 3-1 in 7. Strong team pitching effort from Muschko, Sasser, Sommer, Cales, giving up 1 h, WP, and an unearned run.

Starlin Castro – 1/4, R, E.
Jovan Rosa – 2/3, 2B, RBI, E. I keep hoping he gets going.
Luis Flores – 1/3, 2B, RBI.

Peoria lost to Kane County, 5-4.

Josh Harrison – 2/4, 2 R, 3B.
Josh Vitters – 0/3, RBI.
Kyler Burke – 1/3, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K, SB.
Rebel Ridling – 2/3, RBI, BB, K, E.

comp

What is a good comp for this kid? GG defense, decent average (if pretty empty), 25-35 steals, right? Is he some middle point b/w Tony Fernandez and Omar Vizquel? I think he’s going to have a strong, long, unspectacular career . . .

Sounds about right

Tony Fernandez with less walks, I guess. I think Escobar will show some surprising (in context) power once he’s been on an MLB workout regime.

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

Quinton Miller

Anyone know when he is going to make his MiLB Debut?

Kid in the Pirates system. I have heard good things about him. Anyone with any clues?

Miller

I’d guess whenever the GCL season begins. There’s also an outside chance that he starts the year in the NYPL.

do those leagues begin?

I think in a few weeks

It’s after the people drafted have a chance to come. It takes a little time for them to sign and to warm up and then they start

Carter

2-2, 2 R, HR, RBI

Hit his 8th HR of the year. Now has 31 XB hits on the season.

Has cut his K-rate to roughly 25% and is hitting .295 through half of today’s game. Word is the A’s altered his swing a little bit, which accounts for the high ammount of doubles and lower strike out totals, but the HRs appear to be on the way—Has hit 7 since the start of May.

When is Carter

Going to get the call to the Show? He has been pretty consistent

by jepmotors on Jun 8, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Think

He’s a level a year type guy. Still learning to play first and recognize the breaking balls. Still young, just 22 years old.

by asyouwish33 on Jun 8, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Any chance

he becomes a solid regular in Oakland? Or is he just gonna be another guy that they dont give a real shot to?

I think with consistent playing time he can be a pretty good 1b for years to come.

The Giants

not only was it the Giants, but it was a Giants team who is fricken tired. Rain Delay’s every day for the past week or so. They showed how much time they’ve waited for delays in this road trip, it’s nearing in on 10 hours.
