Love him
And shortstop is the right call, at least for now.

Have him do both in the AZL
and extended. You don’t have to make that decision right away

I've not heard the comp publicly
…but think about how Matt Bush was rated as a prep…
Solid bat (average) possible potential power, slick fielder, cannon arm
by pffriberg on Jun 6, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bush had a two cent head though

I think that is beinbg generous
In reality you would probably get change from 2 cents.

Rockies take OF Everett Williams Texas HS
by threesixteen on Jun 6, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Damn, nice pick
You are having one hell of a draft.
by RedSoxFaithful on Jun 6, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I had no clear option for this pick
I like Williams alot, but OF is an organizational depth and just took Wheeler. There were five other players strongly considered here. Let’s see if one drops to pick 57. Also need to consider budget a little.

arizona
Arizona up. Might want to consider a budget pick here given purke cost

again
I really think we need more direction from John pre-draft in future years.

renfroe
I’m going to go ahead and allow renfroe. But no more expensive picks for arizona or I will override.
by John Sickels on Jun 6, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
KG posted his top 50 this AM
and has Renfroe rated 28th
by pffriberg on Jun 6, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nobody doubts he's good
I think he would’ve been off the board well before now if not for signability.
by mrkupe on Jun 6, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
guys stop
we don’t need to be THIS critical
by pffriberg on Jun 6, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
But, that was just completely nonsensical
:(

Surprised he fell this far
Any reason why?

supposedly
he had some sort of ankle injury so he wasn’t pushing off the rubber prompting him to sit 85-88 rather than his usual 88-91 touching 92

You and the Rockies are kicking the shit out of this draft now.

Skaggs and Gould
were two of the other 5 I considered.
by threesixteen on Jun 6, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
whatever
what guys ask for and what they get are two different thing, last I checked I never heard of pick who you can sign. We weren’t given a budget and guys asking prices are just that asking prices. So get over yourself

you do know this is a mock draft right?
by GoldenSpikes24 on Jun 6, 2009 2:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
this isn't who YOU'D pick. it's who you think the DBACKS will pick.
by thegoldengreek33 on Jun 6, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's both
It is supposed to be a mixture of both.. I should have made that more clear.
by John Sickels on Jun 6, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll say one last time
it’s not at all clear how the draft should be approached, so I think what Golden Spikes is doing is fine. Others are doing different approaches about taking into account signability, or even team philosophy, which I agree with, but Golden is playing fine within the (lack of) rules.

I like it!

I'm all for BPA
But that will be an interesting logjam between Fielder, probably Gamel and Pythress.

by RedSoxFaithful on Jun 6, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
aren't you worried he only threw as his teams closer in high school?
by thegoldengreek33 on Jun 6, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have 5 picks in the top 50.
I can afford to take a risk- Younginer gives us an extremely high ceiling pitcher, that might not have the same signability concerns that others have because of his closer history.
by RedSoxFaithful on Jun 6, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
very true
he’s got as good of stuff as any prep arm, but more than likely a reliever down the line.
by thegoldengreek33 on Jun 6, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually
He’s got some pretty significant signability concerns. College is a very good possibility for him.
But I quite like your reasoning otherwise. Interesting move.
by mrkupe on Jun 6, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
just saying
he doesn’t have a ton of leverage and won’t get much overslot. it’d probably be wise to sign now.

maybe Sciosia can platoon him with a weak hitting catcher
by thegoldengreek33 on Jun 6, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good pick
Considered him at up 34, in part due to signability, so it makes sense.
by threesixteen on Jun 6, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks
I’m very pleased with my first 5 picks. I really got to bolster the pitching depth of my system, with Paxton, Wilson, and Younginer, and Davidson/Phegley should do wonders for a system that really shies away from offense.
I think I managed to keep signability in mind, too. While Paxton and Davidson will ask for a lot, I think Wilson and Phegley will be a little more cost-sensitive, and Younginer doesn’t have as much leverage as other HS arms.
