Mat Latos

How long before Mat Latos is pitching in SD?

He started the year injured (again) but has been unworldly since starting.  Seemed like the Padres were being conservative starting him in Low A ball but he dominated that level in 25.1 innings of work.  A more agressive promotion to AA should have been a challenge for him however in his 17.2 innings of work there he's posted 9.68 K/9, .74 WHIP, .51 ERA and only allowed 1 earned run and no HRs.

With SD's constant need for pitching will Latos get a call sometime this year?  If he does, pitching in PETCO do you think he'll be able to be an effective MLB starter and future ace?

depends on two things ..

1. can he stay off “the medicine” if you know what i’m saying…and yes i have sources to verify this
2. can he stay healthy

he’s been downright nasty this year.

Stuff

Do you think he has the “stuff” to be a legit number 1 starter?

My opinions...

Latos is living up to expectations. I’d like to see more sustained dominance before I’d promote him again, and given that San Diego is in a rebuild mode, I wouldn’t see why they would bring him to the majors for any significant stint. I think it would be more valuable for him to stay in AA.

Love his numbers, and pitching in Petco is certainly a plus. I think he’s got what you need to be an ace type, for sure. From what I understand, he did have some injuries, but none were really pitching related, not the typical injuries anyway.

All in all, I’m pretty optimistic about Latos.

id think its very reasonable to say hes a top 30 prospect right now, if he keeps dominating he could get the call, depending on how the padres want to handle it but i think most people expect him to be down in the minors til next year
