Bryce Harper on cover of Sports Illustrated

Article is here.

"Baseball's LeBron"

He's now on the radar of the entire baseball universe, not just prospect hounds.  The article has quotes from his mother that indicates they are serious about having him get his GED this summer and enrolling him in a juco in the fall so that he would be eligible for the 2010 draft.  It's also interesting that when he was 12 years old, he was flying around the country without his parents as a "gun for hire" for junior tourney teams.

I'm sure he'll live up to the hype

I think the last time a HS Baseball player made the cover of SI he was never heard from again.

I thought I heard

It was some kid who threw a bunch of no-hitters in the 90s. I’m not even sure he ended up having a pro career.

well, Im glad his life seems good

It doesnt matter how good a Pitcher looks when they are younger, throwing a baseball as hard as you can over and over again is just so stressful on your arm and no pitcher is safe from suffering career ending injuries even at the age of 21

And Again

The inevitable and predictable backlash rears it’s ugly head.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Who you callin ugly?

I don’t think he’ll be bad by any stretch, just that its awfully tough to live up to that kind of hype.

If he jumps into the draft early, that could be a big mistake.

The history of those players is not good. I’m not in the group that thinks he could dominate the minors right now. He still needs to mature.

Josh Hamilton had a good home life too. I just really worry about these kids when they are just talked up and talked up from the time they are 12 or whatever and are EXPECTED to be great. It’s so much pressure to live up to, and as a young person trying to deal with everything else from girls, school, whatever else, it’s a lot to ask. The kid is 16! Jesus, I can’t even imagine how I’d react if I was 16 and all this was happening to me. I hope it works out but I think most of the time these phenoms have serious wrinkles exposed when they get into the real world
