michael taylor: 4/5, 2 2Bs

i’m ecstatic to have him, chris carter, and tyler flowers on my sim league team. it’s a lot of beef, a lot of bat.

human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

whoa

He is red hot. Carter is too. Nice group, all 3 having their doubters coming into the year.

by wobatus on Jun 29, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jeez

and this is after his 3 hits and a hr and 4 rbi’s yesterday…this kid needs to be in AAA and is making a big push to be a top 10-15 prospect

by miraclemets on Jun 29, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what are the odds

he doesnt even get a chance to be a top 10-15 prospect?

by wildthang on Jun 29, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

slim

simply put, the phillies don’t need him right now, and his performance in AA kinda makes him untradeable. 6’6" 250 lb. people don’t hit .350 in AA. it really doesn’t take a trained eye to see the massive potential in his bat, not to mention the colossal downside of trading him if he does hit his peak.

anyway, because there’s still a quedtion as to whether taylor can be this good at the major league level, his value as a trade chip is kinda peaked. as good as he looks, he’s not gonna net cliff lee in a 1 for 1 deal, or even a 1 for 1+3 marginal prospects type deal. right now, it doesn’t look like that’d be anywhere near CLE’s asking price, since they’re looking for taylor, drabek, and happ as the starting point.

human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

by variablesdont on Jun 29, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

given his profile

it’s going to be tough for him to crack the top 15 prospects overall – top 10 to 15 hitters maybe…

His statistical performance rates with Gamel and LaPorta last year .. given neither of them cracked the top 20 on BA prospect list it’s hard to see Taylor going higher than that.

Plus a lot of people would still put him 3rd in his own organization behind Dominic Brown and Kyle Drabek…. Phillies still not recognized for, and just may the best at, generating home grown championship level talent.

by SLK on Jun 29, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Taylor is a better all around player than both

Taylor has some speed and can play defense with a legit position. Something the other two can’t say.

by Bravesin07 on Jun 29, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uhh what?

Well, 1. Dominic Brown definitely wins a race between taylor and brown, and Kyle Drabek is a pitcher, so defense is hardly relevant. Not seeing your point…

Scratch that

I am seeing your point; I think. You are comparing Taylor to Gamel/LaPorta, not Brown/Drabek I assume…correct?

interesting

milb lists him at 2b, and the last game he played at second last I checked, whichw as yesterday…but I checked a few games before and they were all shortstop, and that’s all I had heard before. Not that I have paid much attention to him, looks like i should.

No, Im in Rhode Island

He’s playing for Portland, Maine. I make it out to Pawtucket, so Ill see him next year. Maine is a bit far for me.

He’s just very streaky. Lets struggles get to him. Still quite young… not concerned at all.

Cubs

Iowa lost to Round Rock, 3-2.

Esmailin Caridad: 5.2 ip, 5 h, 3 r (1 unearned), 4 bb, 7 K’s. He got a lot of Cubs fans talking in the winter, and his K rate has gone up this year, but the “strike thrower” sports a bb rate that many did not expect.

Tennessee beat Huntsville – 7-2.

Casey Coleman: 6.2 ip, 7 h, 2 r, 2 bb, 6 K’s, WP. 15th rounder last year, the “legacy” kid has had a surprisingly solid season after being aggressively pushed to AA. He’s got a good sinker, decent curve and change, and reportedly has toyed with a slider of sorts. If a breaking pitch really develops, he could be that much better.

Alessandro Maestri – 2.1 ip, 1 bb, 1k. The Italian is very similar to Michael Wuertz, including the occasional command issues. But a decent enough fastball paired with plus slider gives him a shot to be a solid middle reliever, IMO.

Daytona beat Jupiter 3-1.

Tony Campana: 2/4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB.
Brandon Guyer: 3/4, 1 RBI, 1 SB. Toolsy kid was pushed from Peoria to Tennessee, where he struggled. He’s been doing well in Daytona in the early goings.
Dan McDaniel: 6 ip, 5 h, 1 unearned, 1 bb, 4 K’s, HBP. Big righty got off strong after being jumped to Daytona, then stumbled big time in June.

More Cubs Happenings

Aside from the previous reports of Cashner to AA and Carpenter to High A…

1B Ryan Keedy Released
3B Josh Vitters to Daytona
2B Nathan Samson to Tennessee
SS Darwin Barney to Iowa
1B John Contreras to Daytona

Contreras

I wonder how much he’ll be behind the plate.

by toonsterwu on Jun 30, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vitters...

finally. He was too talented for the MWL, which I worried was going to stunt his growth – particularly learning to take a walk now and then. Nice to see him move to a place where he might be challenged.

jarrod parker

6 ip 2ks 2bbs 1er 4hits

where would u rank him among pitching prospects
i would think bumgarner , matusz, strasburg are all def ahead of him. then maybe feliz, tillman, and parker in the next tier. parker doesnt have dominant stuff or stats/

by jarjets89 on Jun 29, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Parker is elite

Parker’s upside is just as good as Matusz’s imo, if not better.

Caleb Gindl: 4-4 with a homer and two doubles

Eric Arnett went two innings with a 2/0/2/ K/BB/H and allowed an unearned run.

Jake Odorizzi went six (!) innings with a 4/1/5 K/BB/H and two runs, both earned.

Lorenzo Cain began his rehab from a knee injury in the AZL, going 1-2 with a double and a walk.

It was a great selection of awesome.

Tigers

Alex Avilla: 2-6, 2K (He may be the most legitimate position prospect in our system)
Cale Iorg: 3-6, 2K
Wilkin Ramirez: 1-3, BB, K, R, RBI
Scott Sizemore: 3-5, R, 2 2B, RBI

Luis Marte (back at AA): 3 ER, 6H, 3HR, 4K, BB

Che-Hsuan Lin

I’m curious if anyone has any thoughts/seen him play. I really like the kid a lot, and I’m hopeful he can push his way up the ladder. Obviously, a lot of OF talent in the Red Sox organization. He went 2/5 for Salem today, with a run, HR, RBI, and SB. After a horrendous April, where his K/BB was at an ugly 19/5, he seems to have really settled in. The K/BB after April has been an excellent 24/32. He’s 16/21 on SB’s for the year. Only 20, not turning 21 until later this year, he’s probably not done developing physically. Doesn’t seem likely to develop plus position power, but he might see some more pop develop. He had a solid June line of .298/.407/.426. I’m guessing he’ll be in Salem all year, although if he continues to produce, maybe a late AA look is possible. Doesn’t seem to be anything statistically in the last 2 months that would be cause for caution.

Anyhow, anyone seen how he’s been swinging or have any general thoughts?

by toonsterwu on Jun 30, 2009 1:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I haven't seen him, but I like him

Adjusted for park and luck on MLS, his line is .315/.409/.407.

It was a great selection of awesome.

I said it and I knew it he wasn’t ready for AA I LOVED him in High A Ft. Myers but i didn’t like the promotion too much at AA New Britian and he has pretty much stunk it up there so far.

Meh.

If you don’t use ERA to evaluate pitchers, Gutierrez has looked like a guy aching to be hit no matter what level he’s at.

any jays fans out there have a sense for their game plan with this fine young hurler?

should at least get to compete for a rotation spot next year, but with Marcum and McGowan coming back, who knows.

by saltybiscuits on Jun 30, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's going to be pretty tough to break into that rotation.

Halladay, Richmond, Romero, Cecil, Marcum, McGowan, Litsch

The Jays are going to have all kinds of pitching depth when/if these guys are all healthy next year.

That said, Zep is looking fantastic.

by PissedMick on Jun 30, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i've heard very bad things about mcgowan's recovery.

and marcum seems to be a while away, as well. both are coming off of major arm injuries, and as good as they looked previously, there’s no telling what they’ll look like when they get back.
