Please rank these Prospects
Hi
I'm in a Dynasty Keeper League -H2H- and have a shot at one of the following players:
(edit)
-Nick Weglarz
-J Tazawa
-S Elbert
-A Swarzak
-E Martin
-M Perez
-Jason Knapp
How would you rank these prospects...in terms of who you'd want to stash.
Thanks a lot. Thanks a lot. Thanks a lot. For me
I think I’d go Weglarz/Elbert/Tazawa/Swarzak. I tend to think Swarzak will have flashes, but settle into a mid-end of the rotation arm, the type of guy you can find. I gotta admit I’m just not too certain on Tazawa. I really like Elbert, but Weglarz seems safer to me to settle into LF at Progressive Field in the near future and be a solid starter, versus Elbert being a solid rotation arm in the near future.

In my opinion
So your Dynasty league is AL/NL and those are the best 4 options you have for a prospect keeper to pick up? I assume the bench/farm spots on the rosters are very deep.
1. Weglarz
2. Elbert
3. Tazawa
4. Swarzak
I wouldn’t waste a roster spot on Swarzak or Tazawa yet. Elbert might get the 2nd half call on a good ballclub which would merit a roster spot. Weglarz has the most potential out of the bunch in my opinon. You don’t have a Martin Perez or Ethan Martin or Jason Knapp out there as a really young keeper to look at by chance?

thanks
thanks for the replies..I really do appreciate them.
This is both NL/AL—both leagues.
Knapp , M Perez and E Martin is on the wire.
Adding them to the mix, how would the rankings be with:
-Nick Weglarz
-J Tazawa
-S Elbert
-A Swarzak
-E Martin
-M Perez
-Jason Knapp

No problem
I’m in several dynasty/keeper leagues and understand where you’re at with the players. Those 3 were just the first 3 to come to mind for me to gauge the depth of players still available. I think it all really depends on how fast you need someone giving you stats. If you can afford to wait a few years I personally prefer Ethan Martin over the rest of the guys there. However, you will find some really smart people on here that can probably make the case for the other guys as well. My last thought on ranking those particular players is:
1. Ethan Martin
2. Martin Perez
3. Jason Knapp
4. Weglarz
5. Elbert
6. Tazawa
7. Swarzak
As far as who could contribute the fastest for your team I would lean towards Elbert. Of course, Swarzak has been up already so you just need to figure out if you want to go for help this year (Swarzak or possibly Elbert) or sitting on someone for a few years for greater gains down the road (Knapp and Martin are both 19 I believe). Hope this helps!

-E Martin (Stud)
-M Perez (Secondary stuff took a leap forward this year)
-Jason Knapp (super high ceiling, awesome fastball, questionable secondary offerings)
-S Elbert (injury risk w/shoulder, might not be a starter)
-J Tazawa (solid, stuff better than advertised, knows how to pitch)
-Nick Weglarz (HRs and BBs… but nothing else… not sure why people are rating him so high. He can hit, but might end up at 1B and had a shitty April & May. At his best, he will be a 1 category player who is a strong negative in SB and AVG).
-A Swarzak (Doesnt really shine anywhere, pretty good stuff, off field issues)
Yeah, if you can only take one, it has to be Ethan Martin, and its not even close. After that, the next 4 pitchers are all very dissimilar and all have different things that recommend them. Its a really interesting collection of guys with different strengths and weaknesses… really a personal preference thing. I might take Knapp because his velocity and fastball are just sexy as hell. Perez and Knapp are kind of a toss up for me and I really like them both. Flip flop em if you like – I did ten times or so. Elbert I have my questions about, but I could absolutely understand someone ranking him second on this list. Tazawa is really good, but IRL he is behind lots of good pitchers… could end up in the pen rather easily, which isnt ideal for fantasy purposes. Weglarz has to absolutely rake in the majors to justify his selection… I think he will hit, but he’s not exactly a slam dunk. He provides no speed at all, so its all HRs. He’s a one category player, and its a question mark how much exactly he will help in that one category. Oh yeah, he’s been awful this year until very recently. Swarzak? Nice arm, but unimpressive the last few years and a lot closer to run of the mill than the rest of these guys. Ethan Martin is your man, no question.

Seriously, I cant for the life of me understand why people are recommending Weglarz here.
Lets say your league uses the most common, traditional 5X5. So the offensive categories are AVG, R, HR, RBI, SB. Where is Weglarz going to help? Not AVG. His contact skills arent all that great. He strikes out a ton and will probably hit for an umipressive (league average or below) batting AVG. Rs and RBI? Sure. Youre wagering an awful lot on how the Tribe decides to use him. He’s not a lock to hit anywhere in the order. Early in his career he could very well hit 6-7-8. If he does, he’s probably a negative in those categories. SB? Absolutely nothing there.
So, basically, youre banking on him hitting lots of HRs – enough to make up for being a drag in other categories. AND this is best case scenario! This is assuming he hits his projections/ceiling.
If you use OBP instead of AVG I like him a bit more, but Id still take those pitchers above him. They all have a chance of being stars at their position. Weglarz has basically no chance of that, although he is a good bet to be a solid source of power in MLB.
Id stay away from Weglarz. Youre most likely going to get a Michael Cuddyer kind of OFer… but you could easily end up with a guy who plays exactly like Juan Rivera (HR help, negative everywhere else). That type of player (either one) is never that desirable an option in your OF. In a mixed league, this type of player is easily replaceable. Weglarz isnt terrible, but he’s nothing special. A safe bet to end up with an average fantasy OFer. Take a chance on one of the arms being special first.

for real?
his wOBA in May was .438 with an ISOP of .295
in June he’s been even better at .465 wOBA and .311 ISOP including a 20.8 BB% and 18.8 K% .
his bat screams “star potential” to me.
he is also 21 and in AAA. very good ARL. If he continues on this tear, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Cleveland OF in August/Sept at age 21.
yes his April was bad. but that was the aberration. his OBP has been steady every year. his SLG and ISOP was surpressed last year in the Carolina league, but he maintained his OBP and even improved his BB% over his first year. and his BB% has improved again this year by several % points.
he actually reminds me of Votto, except he’s slightly younger for his leagues, and he hits for better power.
Votto in AA hit for .228 ISOP, 13.3 BB%, .405 wOBA at age 22
Weglarz so far is .237 ISOP, 16.8 BB%, .387 wOBA at age 21 …. and its not higher than Votto because of his april

Yes, for real
As a FANTASY ASSET, its hard to imagine him being that great.
I said I do believe in his bat. I like Weglarz a lot, but even if he hits his ceiling he’s not going to be some kind of fantasy monster, especially in a mixed league.
I find it hard to believe theyre going to fast track him to the majors after his struggles this season, and with his being fairly raw (Canadian) AND his not being a good defender… AND with the Tribe probably not contending and there being no incentive to start AND he’s not even on the 40 man. Why would they call him up this year??
Regardless, no way I take him over Ethan Martin. Lets say they both hit their ceiling… best case Martin would definitely be more valuable than best case Weglarz.

He'll be better in fantasy than IRL because defense won't count
Cleveland is weird… i don’t know if they will, but I said I “wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the call in Sept” … why not? assuming they are out of contention, and have this kid tearing up the minors… he’ll get a cup of coffee this year at least.
what would you say his ceiling his? if he hits his ceiling he will be very valuable. I just compared him to Joey Votto. both Canadian LH bats with batting eye, and power. both under-rated.
as for him over Martin, I’d take Weglarz, but I could see the argument for the upside of Martin. no way I even consider the others tho. It’s Martin or Weglarz, and I’d go Weglarz 8 out of 10 times.

I like the Votto comp
I really like Weglarz. In fantasy, though, he’s not going to be a super option. In fantasy a lesser player who steals more bases is a preferable option. Weglarz is essentially a one category guy. You dont built a fantasy team around guys like that. Id rather take the pitchers with a chance of being front line starters.
by alskor on Jun 27, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well i'm glad you like him
but a few posts above, you told the guy “I’d stay away from Weglarz”
and I’d disagree with the “one category guy” part. guys who hit for power and are great with OBP generally score plenty of runs and rack up RBIs. Adam Dunn always scores 100 or close to it.

It's the Indians
I can’t see Weglarz not spending at least two more years in the minors, and that’s even if he starts mashing.
by mrkupe on Jun 27, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
starts?
he IS mashing. is there some Weglarz snubbing on this site?

sorry
I meant with regard to his batting average.

look at his month-by-month numbers
subtract his April… I don’t know what was wrong with him [everyone goes through slumps], but his bat is the real deal. I think he’ll be closer to Votto than Bruce/Dunn.
also, 1-4 with a 3-run jack tonight. he IS MASHING right now
by daveh33 on Jun 27, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
closer to Votto in avg / overall bat
just to be clear. though of course, average was strongly implied with the Bruce/Dunn reference

Disagree with this assessment
I think you are way underselling Swarzak . . .he’s not spectacular, but he’s already at the major league level and should at least be a passable major league starter, and given the high risk nature of this crop that’s a big plus for me.
I also think you might be overselling Ethan Martin at this point. He’s a nice power arm and I’ll go on record as really pushing the guy hard before last year’s draft, but his numbers other than the Ks are not all that great for the Midwest League. I find Martin Perez to be much more impressive – better numbers across the board in a more difficult league, raw stuff is comparable from the left side, better repertoire, ARL is better looking if you’re a fan of such things, Ethan Martin’s only real plus over Perez is that he is bigger, and that’s not enough to shift it for me.
He definitely can’t take Tazawa, because at this point Tazawa projects to be something like Boston’s No. 9 starter. Not to say that he couldn’t be a success as that is based more on the depth in Boston, but that’s adding another element of risk to the equation – he has to rely on Tazawa continuing to pitch well, continuing to stay healthy, AND getting a spot. Maybe Boston will look kindly on the idea of adding a left-handed pitcher to their rotation?
I’ll assume that if he wants a position player rather than a pitcher, he’ll take Weglarz, and I don’t see a reason to compare him to the other six guys.
From there, Perez and Swarzak are 1-2 depending on whether he wants a more immediate contribution or upside. Martin is third. I worry about how Knapp will translate to higher levels of competition, although he is very young and has a lot of development time ahead of him, so he’s fourth. Elbert and then Tazawa to finish.

Yes, but we're comparing him against some pretty damn good prospects here
Swarzak is interesting… I used to like him a lot. He’s just not in a class with Ethan Martin.
Same goes for Weglarz. Id like to have all these guys on my fantasy team. I just think some of them are ahead of others. None of them are bad.
I think Martin has a bit more of a stuff advantage over Perez than youre giving him credit for. Perez sits low 90’s last I heard. I love Perez, but if we’re talking ceiling its going to Martin.
