2009 Futures game rosters

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/futures-game/2009/268439.html

Wow, the American team might win infinity to nothing.

I'm surprised Villalona is on the team again, wasn't he on it last year? I thought BA tried to spread players out from year to year.

Also, interesting trivia, 7 of my fantasy team's 8 minor league players will be in this game.

Now I ask you, is that tripe I wrote under the link better than just typing "FILLER FILLER FILLER, I HATE THE 75 WORD LIMIT?"

Good Stuff

But I’m not sure if your statement was necessarily trivia or more fyi.

Well if someone were to ask

“For 200 points, how many of Galt’s minor league players are in the futures game this year?”

You would know that the answer is “7”, which I think makes it count as trivia.

by Galt on Jun 25, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think then

you would say “for trivia’s sake.” FYI, I have 7/13 from my roster. haha. Why didn’t Rondon make it?

by asyouwish33 on Jun 25, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Few of my guys made it

4 pitchers (Kelly, Latos, Tillman, Parker) 2 Hitters (Villalona, Carter)

3 of my guys I was surprised didn’t make it: Rondon, Alderson, and Morrison. Morrison was hurt, but the American Team has little depth at 1B.

I’m excited to see: Flores, MadBum, Mejia, Wallace and Feliz.

Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

Also

feel free to hijack this thread and talk about whatever you want.

I’ll start. Twitter is stupid. I will never use it. I will never sign up for it. It serves no purpose and will eventually fade into Bolvian

There's a lot of good baseball content by following the right Twitter feeds

Plus it’s pretty easy to have direct interaction with scouting gurus and team beat reporters, and there’s a good chance they’ll respond to your questions or comments.

Tell that to the Iranians

Admittedly, those morons who follow celebrities on Twitter are complete and total… well, morons, but it’s good for getting information out of somewhere incredibly quickly with very little effort or technology.

multiple selections

Carlos Carrasco has been selected to the Futures Games three times.

Surprised Dom Brown (injured) or Mike Taylor aren’t on there….

Based on the system rankings

I think it’s a bit odd that Houston has two prospects participating and the Rangers just one.

Yeah

I would have loved to see Martin Perez on the world roster

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 25, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can't base these teams on organizational rankings, but on the players themselves.

Jason Castro has thus far earned his spot. The only guy who could protest is Posey, of course, but because of the limit of two-per-organization, Posey gets bumped by Bumgarner and Villalona.

You certainly have an argument for Martin Perez. But, can you really say Chia Jen-Lo hasn’t earned that spot this season? Can you honestly tell me Jen-Lo is less deserving than half of those International pitchers? I would also argue that Jen-Lo’s inclusion may have less to do with his affiliation with Astros and more to do with his native Taiwan? Perhaps, Major League Baseball is reaching out and trying to coax other Taiwanese players into jumping the Pacific pond and join an MLB organization.

by byronlhsdrmr on Jun 26, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just picked Houston

because they ranked so low for contrast, but I don’t really expect them to base this solely on rankings. I don’t see why they can’t just try to have exactly two players from every org. They’ll need reserves anyway if some players get called up or injured.

Pretty much everyone seemingly underrated the Astros draft last year. They may have “overdrafted” a little on a few guys but they managed to land 3-4 pretty nice looking prospects so far. I’m not saying the Astros system is middle of the pack in terms of organizational strength or depth but I think some of the jabs they took were a bit unfair in hindsight.

by jfish26101 on Jun 26, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, the jabs are just, I say that as an Astros fan...

The Astros probably will rank 30th again at the end of this season, possibly 28th and 29th, but the Tigers added a couple nice arms in Turner and Oliver. The D’backs were the other team I thought Houston could surpass, but they had a great draft, with lots of depth. The Cubs may also be a team that slips behind Houston, though.

Houston’s 2008 draft was great, though. Jason Castro and Jordan Lyles, the perceived overdrafts, have definitely brought legitimacy to Houston’s farm. Ross Seaton is another top arm, and Brad Dydalewicz, Jon Gaston and T.J. Steele could find themselves in Houston’s top 10, assuming Bud Norris graduates, and maybe Chris Johnson or Brian Bogusevic, although the 2008 draftees could certainly rank ahead of the latter two anyway.

However, Houston’s farm has very little depth. After the aforementioned names, there aren’t many players who project to be solid major leaguers. Those who do, other than those mentioned, and Chia Jen-Lo, have little upside. So, Houston does deserve the hard time many people give them. The 2006 and 2007 drafts were not good, at all, and although we are starting to see them turn the corner, the system as a whole is still a long way off.

I love Bobby Heck, I think he is one of the very best things the Astros have going for them, but this 2009 draft does not look spectacular. Obviously, most of them haven’t played pro ball yet, and those that have have what, three games under their belts, tops. Mier provides solid upside, as does Tanner Bushue, but Nash is very raw, and although Meyer is interesting, he doesn’t project well. The rest of the draft lacks upside, though I do like Enrique Hernandez a lot.

by byronlhsdrmr on Jun 26, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you agree the 2008 draft is better than analysts said, why are you so sure the 2009 draft “is not spectacular”? I’m not saying it is, just saying they seem to take the guys they like regardless of what the analysts say and I think that has it’s merits. Perhaps the Astros will rank near the bottom again (I never said they wouldn’t making a point of saying I don’t think they are middle of the pack) but it made improvements despite virtually every analyst giving them nothing but shit for their draft last year.

by jfish26101 on Jun 26, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And to add one small point

I just thought that it should be easier to find two players you want to include from the top ranked system than from the bottom ranked one.

How come no Buster Posey and Tim Alderson in there?

Any one team can only have two players

So for the Giants those two are MadBum and AnVil. Every team has to be represented.

Stockton’s last game was sunday the 21st; Weeks missed games on the 20th and the 21st. Perhaps it was only precautionary? We’ll see if he’s in the lineup tonight.

Weeks

Weeks is in the lineup tonight, and hit a HR in his first AB. If he did injure himself, I don’t think it was very serious.

Omissions

I’m a little surprised that Smoak isn’t on it, but I guess due to injury. Same with Michael Taylor.

Toronto?

Why is there no Blue Jays player listed?

by metafour on Jun 25, 2009 2:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Luis Perez? This game sucks…if you’re not a big market team you get stuck into sending some non-prospect just to fill the roster. Perez isn’t even a Top 10 prospect in the Jays system.

Wtf are you talking about

Mejia is on the team already.

by Fanon on Jun 25, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol

A. Chill the hell out.
B. Who else are you sending from the Mets? Davis? Havens? Flores was ranked high and still has the ARL going for him. He has been heating up as of late. Obviously they will give a NY team a 2nd prospect on the team. Most of the big markets have 2.
C. 3 SS on a team 1 2B isn’t a big deal whats so ever. Would you rather a 6th OF?

Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

by Metty5 on Jun 25, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not questioning his potential star power in the future

It just seems to lend credence to the New York hype machine. I mean, I think Wilmer is going to be a great player, but he’s really far away from the majors. While he’s definitely holding his own, he’s really not tearing up the league. If you wanted a Mets middle infielder who was super young for his league with a lot of untapped talent who’s not performing ridiculously well at the moment, Ruben Tejada would have been a better choice (who’s also been pretty hot of late).

And I really don’t buy into the Mets needing two guys in the game just because they’re a big market club.

by Fanon on Jun 25, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mets dont need it

But the game might. Having two players from big market teams probably sells more tickets. And the name of the game is the “Futures Game” so isn’t the point for players to be the ones who are “going to be a great player(s)”. And most are “really far away from the majors” hence the levels below AA.

I’m not arguing that Flores should be there, just that if they are going to pick two players from the major markets, Flores is just a good option with some name value as any other on the Mets.

Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

by Metty5 on Jun 25, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could be wrong

But if I remember correctly, there’s pretty much no one at the Futures Game. Ever. Though it does get decent TV ratings. I mean, it’s possible, but considering that your average fan really doesn’t know anything about prospects, particularly in the low minors, I don’t think it’s going to sell too many more tickets. I’m pretty sure that the folks who go see the Futures Game are all either fans who just want to see some baseball or prospect loving weenies.

What would make sense is if they stacked the team with prospects from St. Louis and the other teams from the plains.

by Fanon on Jun 25, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously the Mets deserve two prospects in the game.

the mets deserve two players as much as Starlin Castro and Manny Banuelos deserve to be there… They don’t deserve anything— but the big market team’s players put booties in the seats.

Don't forget

There a several glaring ommissions, but remember they were constrained by the fact that every team had to have at least 1 player on one of the 2 rosters.

In my mind the biggest slight was Castro over Posey as the 2nd catcher. Posey had much better numbers while playing in the same league as Castro – even while Posey was playing in a notorious pitcher’s park (San Jose) and Castro in a notorious hitter’s haven (Lancaster). Granted Castro is now playing in AA, but only for 13 games (and his numbers have suffered). Posey will be called up in the next week or 2 (word is that he’ll go straight to AAA and skip AA). Above and beyond that, how do you exclude Posey from the “Future Stars” game when he is on everybody’s list of the Top 10 prospects in the whole game?

by Fla-Giant on Jun 25, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Villalona and Bumgarner are both in the game...

the Giants cannot have more than two prospects. Thus, Posey becomes the odd man out and Castro plays. Besides I would prefer Castro to Flowers had Posey been added.

by byronlhsdrmr on Jun 26, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do these Rosters even matter?

I mean, Cliff Pennington (A’s) made the team last year. So did A’s farmhands – Henry Rodriguez, Trevor Cahill, and Bret Anderson – Is 2 the limit this season?

by Colorado Fan on Jun 26, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Penington had no business on the team.

"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

by Syphon on Jun 26, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Last year's American team had special rules because it was used to select the Olympic roster

There were a lot more AAAA players on that team— your basic Brandon Knight, Terry Tiffee types. Pennington’s younger than those guys, but he doesn’t appear to actually be able to hit, so he’s kind of in the same category.

very glad to see starlin make it

The 2 limit makes it tough, and I would’ve rather seen Jay Jackson get the nod, but I’m pleased that Starlin should get some recognition coming off a successful jump to High A and garnering the FSL ASG MVP.
