Unfortunately
Matusz won’t be pitching tonight. According to Roch Kubato it’s not injury related but he’s expected to be skipped.

Daytona loses to Lakeland 2-1
Starlin Castro: 3/4, R, SB, E (24th). Season: .306/.338/.392. The errors are disappointing, but he’s young.
Andrew Cashner: 4ip, 1 h, 4 K’s. Hmm … this starting experiment is working much better than I thought. In 38 ip, only 1 HR, with 31 K’s, while giving up 29 h and 12 bb. Granted, still in High A, and only one outing where he pitched 5 innings.
Henry Williamson: 3ip, 3 h, 1 r, 1bb, 1 K. Raw arm from Pie deal has really done well this year. Dunno if he’s simply, say, Brian Schlitter, or a bit more.

Tennessee loses to Montgomery, 1-0
Electric Marcos Mateo had one of his best outings, going 6 ip, giving up 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks, notching 5 K’s. Strike throwing Marco Carrillo came on with 2 scoreless, giving up 2 h and 1 WP, getting 2 K’s. Darwin Barney and Tyler Colvin each went 1/4.

Buster Posey
I heard he might get promoted to AAA.
Any word on that?

Still waiting...
SF Chronicle (I think I have the paper right) is reporting that the Giants front office is discussing it, and that they don’t want to jump the AA catcher to AAA because his hitting skills are behind and it would be counter-productive. So they are discussing sending Posey there. It doesn’t make sense to me to keep him in High-A, so I am guessing that after the all-star break there, that they send him to AAA.
I think this was the rumor with Posey all along? Just wasn’t sure when it would happen.

are you sure
he’s not in High-A right now?

He is...
in High-A right now. I wasn’t real clear, the Giants have a guy named Jackson Williams in AA, who is a good fielder and bad hitter, so they would prefer he stay in AA to refine his hitting. They would have Posey jump from High-A to AAA.

Ah.
Don’t waste time worrying about Posey’s development. We’ve got Jackson Williams to think of!

He should be moved to triple almost immediately after the all star game(which is today I think). This was basically their plan all along as they’ve said they wanted to get him 300~ish PA in high A before moving him up.

Esmil Rogers
So, Rogers pitched another terrific game today in AA, going 8 IP with 7Ks, no walks, and only 1 run. Over the year, he’s pitched 87.1 IP, striking out 75 and walking only 17, for an FIP around 2.80, easily the best in the Texas League.
My question is this; do any of you know how good his stuff is? John wrote a week or so ago that though he touched 96, his fastball is normally in the 88-92 area with an improving curveball and change. BA, on the other hand, wrote that his fastball was in the 92-94 area with movement, and his curveball was plus (they were less impressed by his changeup). The difference between these two reports seems to be between a potentially okay pitcher and a potentially excellent one. Do any of you have a sense which is more accurate?

Haven't seen him
But my sense generally about inconsistent velocity reports is that both are probably accurate. There are likely nights he sits 88-92, and then other night he regularly throws 92+.

3B Danny Valencia
Does anybody know if TONIGHT will be his AAA debut for the Rochester Red Wings?
I am pretty pumped for him, he has to be ready mentally. I just hope he isn’t even a little bit overmatched pysically and Performs at least average-wise… because he’s already practically 25 I think.
Thanks…. RHP Anthony Swarzak will be on the mound.

Jackson Williams
He was a supp. pick in the 07 Draft-He was an overdraft and has always been a good catch & throw guy but a poor hitter.

Mejia may have hit 100 MPH tonight in his start
Binghamton gun said 102 MPH, but it is off by one or two according to Teixiera the Trenton Yankees AA pitcher.

I tried
to get him on the community list earlier. A little surprised he didn’t make top 100. I brought him up as a tester when we were at 28 and someone said he wasn’t top 50 (I think he ended up 55 on BA or BP’s list). He almost got on in the 90s. I suppose folks wanted to see him repeat his success. He certainly has.
I guess I won’t start a “they called me MAD” buncha threads about Taylor. :)

taylor
i drafted him in my 30 team sim league, but i still have no idea what he’s gonna look like when he gets to MLB. he’s hitting .335 right now as a 6’6" 250 lb. 23 year old in AA, and i’ve just got no idea how he can do that being as big as he is. i mean, pujols can hit .330, but he’s 3 inches and 25 lbs less than taylor, and he’s also the best hitter in baseball.
i don’t think taylor is that, but i can’t say he isn’t right now. i’m just kinda baffled right now, and going along for the ride.

he doesn't have to stay at .335
but Derrek Lee and Dave Winfield did ok at that size, perhaps a little slimmer, but kids put away more maypo these days. Each of them had peak seasons in the .330-.340 range and more than one above .300.
I brought him up at 28 and sauid he doesn’t belong on yet but maybe due a tester and someone else said no, he isn’t top 50 material. He got some votes and almost got on in the 90s and you and I discussed him in a comunity thread around that time. I think. Eeven the Phils fans wanted to see more. In the event, I believe he finally got on in the 120s.
He didn’t light up hawaii last fall. That may have helped him in the list if he had.

I just went back and looked. Taylor would have won the poll slot at 91 on the community list but it closed before he got some extra votes. You actually said that if he hit .330 in AA he’d be the starting leftfielder in Philadelphia by June.
Of course he we are in June, ibanez on dl, and still no Taylor, but he IS hitting above .330.
Where does he rank for next year? The Phils have Brown right behind him. I haven’t thought much about next year’s ranking, but off the top of my head Tylor belongs in a top 10 conversation.

taylor's ranking next year, and the little thing about him starting in LF by june
physically, michael taylor has just as much upside as michael stanton. if taylor were hitting .290/.360/.500 in AA right now, he’d probably rank in the top 40. anytime i talk about him, i just keep coming back to the fact that he’s hitting .335, and i just cannot reconcile how he’s doing it. as i said below, i want to scream from the rooftops that this guy is the next best hitter in baseball, but i just do not understand how he’s holding his average so high, and this is for a year and a half, over 3 different levels now.
as for him starting in LF by june, take a look at who’s there right now- it’s john mayberry jr. mayberry isn’t a better hitter, nor is he a better player, he just happened to be higher up in the queue. if that trade hadn’t been made and the phillies still had golson, yeah, i’d have to think taylor would have gotten the call. but that’s really not the more important call to make. he’s just looking like a beast right now.

um, Taylor is clearly not the "next best hitter in baseball"
That obviously goes to Jason “Ichiro II” Donald, wouldn’t you say?
by mrkupe on Jun 24, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don’t know what happened to him this season, and he’s on the DL right now, so he’s an easy target, but you probably shouldn’t dance on his grave just yet.
and if you’re gonna get on me for my support of jason donald, you should probably start nagging me about jordan schafer, dexter fowler, fernando martinez, and a ton of other guys that i advocated for during that process. donald has hit at every level, every year, and jumping off the bandwagon at this point, because of two bad months is not something i’m gonna do.

if you were talking to a phils fan about michael taylor, it was probably me you were talking to.
i’m still in the camp that wants to see more. i really do have no idea what he’s gonna look like, i just keep telling myself that he can’t be as good as he looks. having seen him play last year in lakewood, and having observed his statistical progress in the calender year since, i just want to completely mark out and say he’s gonna be the next best hitter in baseball. i know that it’s way too early and i know that he’s got a lot more to prove, but he’s already done so much more than i’d have thought he’d be capable of, and his physical upside is just so great that i really do just want to go out and scream from the rooftops that this guy is great.

yes
you did say you wanted to see more, but you raved about his upside, but there was another philly fan in the thread (philyfriar) who said he loved the upisde, wanted to see more in double A before he thought he was top 100 material. I think he has shown that in spades.
He may not be .400+ wOBA in thye majors good, as he has done now 2 years running, but I think there’a good chance of him being a good .375 guy once he gets his feet wet.
I was arguing him over samardzija when he got on at 70 or so. I may have sold samardzija short, but not as muchas the Cubs. What’s up with that? They buried him over a few innings in spring and in the majors this year? he isn’t doing too bad in AAA. They couldn’t use another arm?
