6/22 MILB Thread
Here are some starting pitchers to track throughout the day and night
Tom Gorzelanny, Homer Bailey, Scott Kazmir Triple A rehab start, Clay Buchholz, Jake Arrieta, Dan Cortes, Trevor Reckling.
As usual, there may be others as teams begin to list starters but that's the bulk of them. Barren schedule today with the Pacific Coast League, the Eastern League, the Carolina League, the Midwest League, and the South Atlantic League off. Barely worth a thread.

Oliver Perez is starting as well, and John Maine started earlier in the day.
Maine went 4 good innings. Perez has not.

Glad to see
I really like this kid and thought he might have something more serious.

Jay Jackson
Beat Jeremy Hellickson and Montgomery 2-0.
Jackson: 5 ip, 1 h, 5 K’s. On the season, he is now 4-3, 2.95 ERA, 61 ip, 51 h, 21 bb, 59 K’s. The aggressive move to AA has worked in this case, and I think he’s establishing himself as one of the top arms in the minors and a possible top 50 prospect. He got off to a slow start but has dominated since April.
Daytona played Lakeland twice, winning 10-2 and 5-4.
Starlin Castro (FSL ASG MVP): 3-5, 3 R, 1 3B, E (23). Season: .298/.330/.385. Only 19, one of the bright spots for the Cubs this year. Good shot to stick at short by most accounts, though he has to iron out the defensive consistency a bit. Tim Wilken compared him to Tony Fernandez last year when he was in Arizona.
Brandon Guyer: 5-8, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI. Struggled in AA (some bad luck), but he was somewhat pushed there.
Jake Opitz: 4-7, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 SB. I really was intrigued by his bat last draft. Played 3rd.
Jovan Rosa: 3-8, 3 RBI, CS. Here’s hoping he has a strong 2nd half, and that he improves his K/BB. Disappointing first half, but showed signs of life late. .314 average in last 10 games, on 35 AB’s.

re: Jackson
I know he was one of John’s pre-season sleeper favorites but I thought he was more of a middle of the rotation upside kind of guy. Could he develop into a #2 starter at the MLB level?
by Ion293 on Jun 23, 2009 2:00 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't see why he couldn't be a
potential “#2” provided the changeup continues improving. The velocity could inch a bit higher, and his control has the potential to get sharper. A long way to go, but I don’t see why that can’t happen. That said, I’ve never been great at understanding how people differentiate between a potential “#2” and a potential mid-rotation guy.
by toonsterwu on Jun 23, 2009 8:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i mean
he has to 2 plus pitches, with the potential for a 3rd solid one. He doesn’t, by most accounts, have serious mechanical/delivery flaws, and he has the potential to inch his velocity a bit higher as he’s still young to full time pitching. solid off-field guy (granted, nothing to do with being a potential TOR), who is succeeding at AA. I thought he was the Cubs 3rd best prospect entering the year, with a worst case scenario of being a late inning pen arm or a possible TOR guy.

uh oh
He hit his first Double-A homerun on Sunday. And his second on Monday. Watch out. They come in bunches for this guy.

Interested in opinions on this guy. He came over in the Putz trade.

he kinda looks like gerardo parra
that pretty much means that he’ll go as far as his defense takes him.
human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Dan Cortes
6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
Walks have been a huge problem for Cortes this year. Have to wonder if he’s hiding an injury or has had a mechanical breakdown. Anybody heard anything…?

Trevor Reckling
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 BB, 3 K
Strange line.
by alskor on Jun 23, 2009 3:45 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
3 of his last 4 starts had 5+ walks
Hopefully there isn’t an injury lurking.

Anyone
following Romine closely?
The guy looks good.

Indeed
he’s been overshadowed by Montero, but he’s much better defensively, and the bat isn’t shabby either. Now if he could just learn to take a walk…

Yes... that would be nice
but he’s still pretty promising. I dont think he has any chance at all of being a star… but he looks like he has a very good chance to be average-ish – which is a great thing to have young, cheap and team controlled. With his solid all around but unspectacular skill set and tools, the odds look pretty good that he will be at the minimum a useful MLB player/career quality back up catcher.

He started the year as cold as can be
I dont know his April numbers, but just from checking in occassionally Im pretty sure when may rolled around he was under .200 with no power.
