July 2nd international signee fanpost

As many of you know, on July 2nd, teams are able to go overseas to sign players at age 16 or older. Use this thread to discuss and post news on which teams sign who. Some top names include:

-Guillermo Pimentel -Miguel Sano -Jacob Beltre -Wagner Mateo -Gary Sanchez -Juan Urbina -Jurickson Profar -Leonardo Perdomo-Jose Vinicio-Santo Luis Aybar-Rosel Herrera-Jairo Kelly-Luis Sardinas-Humberto Valor.

There are many, many more players, and these are just a few. More on these guys can be found on Baseball America

Some players, like Kelly, have already been linked to teams. He's been linked to the Mets.

Sano, the pretty obvious top international prospect, is rumored to be either a Pirate or Cardinal

The Twins

Mateo and Sano

have both been linked to the Pirates.

IIRC, seven teams are linked to Sano

Pirates, Rays, Cubs, A’s, Jays, Yankees, Rangers, and Twins. Pirates have been the favorites for a while now.

Appears the Twins are a little skeptical of his age and MLB is looking into it. Wonder how this is going to turn out.

From what I've read bone graphs have been done on his and came back he's

somewhere between 16-17 so his age is pretty legit.

Pimental, Beltre, and Profar

have been strongly linked to the rangers and I would not be surprised if they inked all three. There was a rumor a while back about pimental shutting down his tryouts, but earlier today I saw a link on BA that he worked out for the mariners for what its worth.

I'd be surprised if they inked all three

but I wouldn’t be surprised if they got 2 of those 3.

yep, i agree

seems like 2 of 3 is very possible, and from the little info i’ve heard, it sounds like Pimental is the one who wont sign with us

Pimentel

Mariners Minors has reported that Pimentel has been working out a good deal at the M’s complex recently and BA was suggesting that they might steal him from the Rangers.

Mariners could be more willing to spend more

with how much Rangers will be paying extra for their 1st 2 picks.

What are the odds the Braves drafted Minor to save money for Sano?

Do you mean “high odds” as in “long odds”?

he meant very high long odds lol!

I really...........

want the Braves to go after Sano. He’s projected to move to 3B or RF and we definitely need a replacement for Chipper. But we all know as Braves fans that we are not going to sign any of the big name IFA.

by Jay212033 on Jun 19, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am not so sure

Feliz and Tehran were not cheap…The thought crossed my mind that many we are in on Sano.

To me, the Minor pick was so off the wall and untypical for us, I just keep thinking there HAS to be a reason for it.

by jsmall404 on Jun 19, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re:

Feliz was signed for 100,000 in 2005

Teheran was signed for 800,000 in 2007

The Minor pick plus the insurance money that they will recieve from Hudson’s contract had me thinking that we would sign a couple of the big name IFA, but I thought back to the off-season on how they would not spend the money to get that big bat that we desperately needed(Ibanez or Dunn) and realize that the Braves would not be making a big splash in the draft or the IFA market.

I got my info mostly from BA, BP, ESPN Deportes and a few trusted bloggers

Taiwan Baseball Blogspot is a great blog for Taiwanese info. Plus Eastwindup Chronicle, a blog from a couple of Korean scouts for the Cubs and Twins. Saber Scout was good place to check out last year. Kiley McDaniel from SS is now the international guy at BP.

EWC is a great site.

They’re often on the Pac Rim signings before anyone else.

Taiwan Baseball Blog has also been a regular read for years now. He always seems to know which teams are looking at players, and he usually has scouting video available of the bigger names.

Newberg says it was less than 800k

http://newberg.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/08/trading_for_a_starting_pitcher.html

Sourcing Jeff Wilson of the FWST:

Korean 18-year-old righthander Tae-Kyeong Ahn apparently signed for less than the $800,000 that Texas reportedly agreed to pay him recently. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram adds that Ahn might have to fulfill a two-year service requirement with the Korean army before reporting to the United States to pitch.

Anyway, it was probably around there somewhere.

My Korean buddies who are currently doing their service time (and thus essentially incommunicado) told me it was only 18 months now before they went in (as of about two years ago).

So they told you it was 18 months, but 24 months later they still aren’t able to communicate?

They joined about a year ago

This was just the last time I talked to them about it.

And now they’re not able to communicate.

Great Lists

Interestingly enough, the good preformance of the young South Korean team in the World Baseball Classic has seen an increase in signings of them( at least in my perception).

Cardinals have come to a preliminary agreement with Mateo at 3.1 Million

GM John Mozeliak traveled to his house to get the deal done. Just pending til the July 2nd signing date. SF could still sneak in and offer him up more, but as of now, it appears he’ll be signing with STL

I haven't come across

anymore info. I read some info about him published during the WBC which said that was the age released for him on the Cuban rosters. Other than that, that’s all I got. His signing team will have to verify age/identity to the satisfaction of the league however. In his case though, the pen is always an option if he is older but he would get suspended for a year. It would pay to tell the truth in his case; he’ll get 7 figures for sure even if he is 26 I bet.

His paperwork had to be verified for him to play in the WBC

So unless the folks who run that don’t try hard enough, he probably really is 21.

Couple signings

From BA

A’s Sign Venezuelan SS Solano

Posted Jul. 2, 2009 12:17 pm by Ben Badler
Filed under: International

The Athletics officially announced the signing of three July 2 signings from Venezuela, most notably shortstop Wilfredo Solano.

Scouts say Solano will probably move to third base, but his bat is his calling card, with a promising swing and power potential. The word coming out of Venezuela yesterday was that Solano was expected to sign for around $750,000, which would rank as the second-highest international bonus ever for the A’s behind the $4.25 million they gave Michael Ynoa last year July 2, though we have yet to receive confirmation on Solano’s bonus.

The A’s also signed third baseman William Jose “Junior” Martinez and outfielder Alfred Alejandro Sosa.
