Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jemile Weeks....What do you think?

He was the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft. By most projections he was considered  to be chosen in the 20's, a fringe 1st rd type. Then late draft, he became a high riser due to the lack of quality up the middle position players. But no one expected him to go as high as 12 and was considered an overdraft. If you ask most A's fans they preffered wallace or hicks. But A's were hesitant on Wallace defensive value and loooked at Hick's as a pitcher. Fast forward to the offseason and recently, Wallace /Hicks became top 50 prospects, Weeks took 10 months of rest/rehab from a hip flexor injury. So the pick of weeks was looking very questionable.

He was activated in late may and sent to the cal league. He has started his season with a 17 game hit streak and 5hr over that span of games. It is only a sample size of 70 ab's but there's already thoughts of being aggressive with a promotion to AA by mid seson. Especially when other picks like alonso, castro, wallace, g. beckham, smoak, etc have been doing well. High end projections of Weeks ive read could be a top of the order energizer orlando hudson, brian roberts, jimmy rollins (2b version) type. Of course low end, another pennington, quintanilla type A's fans are used to. With cardenas tearing up AA and probably the best 2b prospect in milb, how  will they handle Weeks future position? So looking back at 08 draft updates was the area of the Weeks pick justified, would he go any lower if there was a re do?

Cardenas

Hasn’t he been playing third lately?

I like Weeks, and he impressed me in the handful of games I saw last year on ESPN. I think he could be a pretty good second baseman.

In person he’s a really small guy, maybe 5’9"ish tops, but has quick hands and some pop. From the few games I saw of him, he needs to work a little bit on the strikezone judgement, but definitely projects as a top of the order sparkplug.

Even though you hijacked another poster's title and just put Weeks in there

At least the body of the post is different from what the other guy posted. You’re improving.

I think Weeks is going to be better than people think, just because there’s some backlash from him being a reach pick.

Melissa Lockard has some good things to say

In her draft chats, she said that in the Stockton games she’s watched since he arrived there, he’s been visibly the best player on the field both offensively and (at least relative to the rest of the team) defensively. Part of this is because Stockton is not a very good team, but it also means he’s showing well in comparison to other teams’ prospects in the league.

I hope

That he proves less injury-prone than his brother.

Another interpretation

Ricky Weeks was an extremely productive star at Miami and should have been more highly thought of than he was. It was also an very rare collection of hitters in that draft. It just shows you that the group think on him was WRONG.

Lots of people looked at his size and just assumed he wouldnt have any pop. Well, he does, he takes walks, he stings liners and I would very much question whether Cardenas is a better 2b propspect than him- Id take Weeks in a second.

In fact, Id say that Weeks will prob play 2b for the A’s next season and roll with it.

BTW, Cliff Penninton and Omar Quitanilla in the best 70 abs of thier lives couldnt do what Weeks has done so far.

Mark Ellis is still signed through next season...

His shoulder is sort of a ticking time bomb, I’ll admit, but it’s a little premature to be writing him off already.

Isn't that his option year?

Or does he have another year left in his contract?

Rickie Weeks played his college ball at Southern U, not Miami-Florida.

I think he meant Jemile

At least, that’s my guess from the contents/context of his post.

With Adrian moving to 3rd

It’s only a matter of time until Weeks gets promoted. This guy is a really good prospect. Brian Roberts upside? I hope so.

Man, a 1-2 of Weeks-Cardenas will be so awesome in a year or two.
