Dynasty League: Vin Mazzaro vs Sean West

For context, this is a 10 team dynasty league (40 man rosters including the minors, but only MLB-level players are available in-season) with the standard 5x5 categories for pitching.  Weight future performance more heavily than this year since my pitching staff won't be depending on either for anything but the occasional spot start.  For reference, the last guy on my staff right now is the injured Ervin Santana but others are carrying folks like Ted Lilly, Joe Saunders, Kevin Millwood, Brad Penny so that's around the absolute minimum level of competency needed going forward.

Vin

I’ve got more confidence that he’ll be able to stick in the rotation long term. I like West, though, but I could see him yo-yoing it a bit.

I’m surprised there are so few comments with people explaining their reasoning… maybe this is a candidate for a Prospect Smackdown from John?

I voted West

I think Mazzaro is a very safe bet to stick in a rotation longer, but whether he’s in the 2/3 range or 4/5 range is still up in the air. West might end up a light’s out reliever if he doesn’t last as a starter, so I think he could have more overall fantasy value long term.

Interesting

I hadn’t thought of it that way… does West have closer-stuff?

He did before his injury

I haven’t heard anything to the contrary since he’s come back healthy, so I assume the stuff is still there. Closing was kind of the fallback spot for him if he couldn’t stick as a starter, from what I recall reading on BP a few years back.

Mazzaro

I watched both of them pitch against the Giants within the past two weeks or so…

West actually no hit the Giants for 5 or 6 innings (which isn’t that much to brag about) and Mazzaro no hit them through 4 (which is hardly anything to brag about)…

Just going off of watching their performances I would take Mazzaro…His stuff looks a lot more electric. He has good control and his fastball was really heavy. I was really impressed with the kid. West’s stuff just wasn’t as impressive to me.
