Hypothetical Geoff Blum trade proposal
There is no basis of reports or rumors for this topic. It is merely something I was pondering after seeing the Geoff Blum highlight on Baseball Tonight last night. I started thinking of possible trade destinations for Blum, who is in a contract year. Houston is unlikely to be a contender this year. There will probably be plenty of inquiries about Blum on the trade market, if there haven't been already.
So, here is a trade proposal, and I'd like to get folks' opinions on it. Geoff Blum to the Blue Jays for minor-leaguer Kevin Ahrens.
(I tend to get carried away with over responding to people's replies, so if you are open for a conversation and a response from me, please include a "#" in your response title.)

Geoff Blum
Switch hitter, no power, below average hitting skills, only average on base skills, not much speed, below average middle infield defense, seems to be an above average third baseman. Too many small samples to grasp his defense effectively.
Why would the Blue Jays want him and / or trade a former #1 draft pick for him?

I think Blum would be a valuable add for Toronto. Best-case scenario, Blum is versatile and could be a good left-handed option off the bench. Worst-case scenario, something happens to Scott Rolen, and the Jays are competing for the division with Jose Bautista as their everyday third baseman against the Red Sox and Yankees. There was a time I thought Ahrens could be a contender for the 2012 AL Rookie of the Year. Not so sure anymore.
I'm not one for questioning depth.
But this is pretty meaningless. Blum might be a switch hitter and, thus, a lefty, but he’s still not a good hitter. You don’t go get a lefty bat just for the sake of having a lefty bat. The lefty bat needs to at least do something and… primarily against right handed pitchers. Blum doesn’t.
Right now he’d basically be a defensive super sub for the corner infield and, in an emergency, the middle infield. But do the Blue Jays really need another no hit, somewhat decent glove position player? Even for depth?
In my opinion, if you’re really that worried about Rolen going down, then you go get someone when you need to. At this point, Blum is the epitome of superfluous.

The thing with Rolen is he is so prone to injury. If he gets hurt today, fine. Go out and get someone. What happens if something goes wrong Sept. 1 though? If you’re the Blue Jays, and you’re in contention, you’ve got to see Rolen’s history of injury as an Achilles heal.
If that were to happen
I wouldn’t feel any more comfortable with Geoff Blum than I would with John McDonald.
Once you get below .700
You’re pretty much screwed either way. They both suck.
How about?
Stephen Drew for Clay Buccholz.
I heard someone suggest this the other day and it actually makes some sense…
Sox wouldn't do it
I don’t think they’d trade Clay for anyone except a guy like Hanley
So they acquire Beckett for Hanley
Then trade Buchholz for Hanley.
The Sox are mysterious!

no value
Why would anyone trade for Geoff Blum? Geoff Blum has no value, the only reason he is getting AB’s is because Houston is terrible. If you wanted to trade him for some never will be prospect I could see it, but a former 1st rounder?
If Bavasi was still employed I could see him making that trade, I mean Asdrubal Cabrera for Perez was worst than Ahrens for Blum would be, but I don’t think there are any GMs right now that are so bad as to do that deal
Why you gotta bust my balls like that?
Bavasi’s gone. Let it die. Give me closure! =(
As for Blum, it’s not that he has ‘no’ value, just not much. His defense at third base seems to be slick enough to warrant a piss poor bat, but it’s really hard to make that conclusion with the small sample size of his defense at third. My gut says he’s above average there, though.
Still, the Jays have Scott Rolen, one of the better defensive third basemen. The hell would they need Geoff Blum for?

Really?
Is third base defense ever good enough to make up for a bat like Blum’s?
Already is.
Blum’s been worth over half a win so far this season.

Ryan Meaux
Four years ago when he was traded for the stretch run, Geoff Blum was worth Ryan Meaux. At the time, Meaux was a 26 year old LOOGY in AA.
The only thing that’s changed since that time is that Blum’s gotten four years older.
The only thing that’s changed since that time is
Blum’s gotten four years older … and has gotten a World Series ring.
Excellent Point
Blum is a Proven Winner. Ahrens might not be enough. Probably should add Arencibia to balance things out.
What do you want?
The guy’s a defensive replacement a third base who can’t hit. He’s not worthless, but there aren’t many teams he could possibly fit on.
He’s a backup 3B with starter experience who can handle right-handed pitching, and the Jays don’t have many options in either of those departments.
Career .700 OPS against righties.
Just stop.

2002
You might have gotten someone to bite on a trade in 2002, that is the only year where he showed any kind of value.
