Post away.

Couldn't find any other noteworthy pitchers and am pretty much just typing this to appease the annoying 75 word limit.

Any chance

That this makes it more likely that Matusz will get moved to Double-A? It’s way overdue…

Looked over his numbers, there impressive ..
until i realized he was 23 years old in A+

by dplunjer on Jun 12, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

disagree

He is 23, but he was drafted pretty raw out of college (also played FB). His power is legit, I saw him play for a full season with Burlington® in ’06…he was held back by sore hammies throughout, but still got to see BP and his games at the end of the summer. His power stood out and is pretty impressive IMO. If he gets a late-season promotion to AA, AA/AAA at 24, AAA/MLB at 25 is a little older, but not hopelessly so.

wow

that is impressive. has he turned the corner in having faith in his stuff, thats a halladay esque line

by smoooooth on Jun 13, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

i think that is part of it

he didn’t seem to be nibbling as much and was just throwing his sinker with confidence instead. has showed an improved curveball as well this year which gives him a slower pitch since he doesn’t have a great changeup.

If only

some of this could rub off on Homer Bailey

by smoooooth on Jun 13, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Johermyn Chavez

2-4, 2B. He’s repeating the MWL after a brutal season last year and is making great strides. .279/.339/.502 (.223 IsoP is excellent for the league) with 9 HRs and greatly improved walk and strikeout rates. He has been projected to possibly develop plus power, and since he’s only 20 years old this could be evidence of him making good on his tools.

Between Chavez, Moises Sierra and Eric Thames, the Jays have a nice collection of interesting below-the-radar OF prospects.

John Smoltz

FB: 85-88
SL: 79-81
CH: ridiculous amount of variance, anywhere from 71-80
CURVE: 71-75

Smoltz went almost exclusively fastball and slider in the first four innings with an occasional CU. Then, he broke out a somewhat loopy curveball in the fifth inning just for Brad Eldred. The slider’s still an out pitch. He would have only given up two runs if it weren’t for the fact that Jon Van Every and Paul McNaulty decided both to not call a fly ball into the gap that essentially cost the PawSox the game.

On the other side, Garrett Mock looked good for really the first time this season and J.D. Martin is a freak, I have no idea why he is not in the show right now. He’s much better than Stammen

Fastball

Only 85-88? That doesn’t sound too good. I agree about the slider though, he’s just going to have to rely more on it now.

CB

That is why i love Smoltz! A curve ‘just for Eldred’ Did Brad swing three times in one pitch like bugs bunny was on the mound? Hilarious!!!

by gghulsebus on Jun 13, 2009 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Spinnin

himself into the dirt like a drill with the dirt flyin. As far as the velocity, Smoltz is more that capable handling pitching with that fastball. He’s got the movement to get the job done, the control will be the issue, can he come in hittin his spots or is it gonna take some innings to get into the groove.

Jemile Weeks

Grandslam tonight

4th hr in 50+ ab’s, surprising power.

interesting choice in a few months

Do they keep him in stockton all season just to get ab’s…..he did miss 10 months w/ injury
Send him to AA in a month or so since right now cardenas has been playing 3b.So there seems to be a spot open
If and when Grant Green ever signs, pair him with Weeks in Stockton this summer.

homer

Will the Reds just do him a favor and trade him already? It’s obvious they could care less about the kid as he never gets a fair chance.

by hybrid on Jun 13, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

then he'll get promoted....

give up 6 runs in 4IP and be demoted again. Unfortunately, at this point I think he’s more of an AAAA pitcher than quality MLB pitcher. Yes I know he’s young, but he keeps getting shelled every time he’s called up.

Not human.

He’s just lulling the opposition into a false sense of complacency. That’s what makes him an ace.
