Stassi
Just read a quote from him, claims he didn’t demand an exorbinant amount of $, expected to go go much earlier, doesn’t know what’s going on, then also said that since he was not asking for a lot, that if teams didn’t meet it he’s serious about going to college.
translation: He asked for too much and convinced teams he’s serious about it- so no one is gonna take a flier on him until they reach a pick they are willing to lose if he doesn’t sign…
depends
there’s a chance he fielded a lot of calls last night asking again exactly what the $$$ amount was. if it’s reasonable, there’s a good chance he could be popped within the first 15 picks today.

Stassi
With a full-ride scholarship to UCLA on the table, the Stassis wanted “top 20 money” to pull the Honkers standout away from the Pac-10 school and into the pros, said Max’s father and coach, Jim Stassi.
“We have a figure in our head what UCLA is worth,” he said. "And when those clubs called, we said we are not going to make a deal at slot to get it done.
“He would have gone in the (compensation round) if we had settled for slot.”
I think the Red Sox grab him in the fourth if he’s not gone already. There’s been too much smoke there for there to be no fire.
My guess
His number is 1 million..
That is a scary number for a HS kid with an injury history who is thus questionable to stay at catcher.

reasonable
well the problem is that what he thinks is “reasonable”
I suspect that most teams do not think “top 20” money is reasonable.
Ever notice that every year more than 10 prospective draftees THINK they are top 10 material- it’s not possible of course- some of those who think they are top 10 material- well that belief won’t be shared by those who draft them.
I think there is a good chance that the team that drafts Stassi won’t be the team (if any) willing to meet his price, but rather it will be merely a team that’s willing to lose the pick if they can’t talk Stassi down.
My guess- unless the Sox draft him with their next pick- he doesn’t sign period, no matter what round he’s eventually drafted in.
Royals took Chris Dwyer
They seem to mean business. Nice to see they’re not going for easy signs.

Guys that are sliding
Brian Goodwin
Brooks Raley
Austin Maddox
Kendal Volz

Goodwin sliding is the odd one.
I don’t think he makes it past Boston or NYY

Not really....
UNC commitment and advised by Boras. Apparently wants more than teams think he’s worth, so he’s likely off to Chapel Hill.
Bailey to the Rays
My Chest just said Ka-Pow! Bailey to the Rays.
I guess that is what Pittsburgh is saving money for
Hopefully they can sign Von Rosenberg. Now if only they still had Van Benschoten :)
I love that pick for the Bucs.

TB Day 2
Wow… Bailey in the 4th AND Malm in the 5th?? That’s outrageous if they can sign both. Don’t know anything about their 6th rounder, juco righty Devin Fuller, or 7th rounder, juco CF Cody Rogers.
Despite the name
“Kevin James” in the 9th might be a steal, too. Apparently he’s the most draftable prospect in the state of Wisconsin:

Apparently he had a great workout at the PG showcase:

Red Sox had a really good day
Provided they sign a lot of these guys that fell.

Pittsburgh is looking pretty good
I think there was a little concern in taking Sanchez so early considering their history, but they are showing they had a plan with that pick. If they can sign most of these HS arms they will have the makings of a pretty good draft.
Completely agree.
Neal had to do something with those later picks if he picked Sanchez 4th, but these arms, if they sign, make it all worthwhile.

not sure
I see them signing Billy Cain in the 8th.

O's Draft
Looks to be abysmal so far, but nice value in the 9th with Rice righty Ryan Berry.
I still Like The Rangers draft....

The Pirates continue to kick the crap out of Day 2
They look very smart for the Sanchez pick now, I think. He was a reach, yeah, but that pick was a crapshoot, anyway, and Sanchez was fairly safe. They’ve more than made up for it by now, haven’t they?
I don't know
I would have much rather taken a better player at #4, and still made great picks later. I realize there may be a money difference, but then again, I’d rather have an “A” and 2-3 B/C players than just 4-5 B/C players.
Thing is...
Fact of the matter is that the “A” guys in this draft, aside from Ackley, were all pitchers, and there is an inherent risk in that. I don’t look down on an organization for refusing to pay huge bonuses on arms that very well may blow out and be worthless in 2 years.
Hitters are more likely to fulfill their potential simply because of the extra injury risk of pitching, and honestly, I can understand (although perhaps not fully agree with) an argument from the Bucs that Sanchez was one of the best position guys after Ackley. Certainly, his ability and near-MLB readiness put him in the same league value-wise as some of the higher-upside high schoolers available this year (I’d consider them all in the B/C range).
This was a year where the millions saved on Sanchez’s bonus really could be better used, and of the guys that the Bucs will have available to sign (a lot of upside high school arms), there is a chance that the Pirates could have added a handful of MLB arms in the later rounds.
Mets Organizational Depth?
Hey guys, my cousin was just drafted by a team I know little about… Mets? Joey August is my cousin, outfielder from Stanford.
Not a fan of its depth
A few good outfield prospects. I haven’t been a fan of a Mets draft for years (no offense to your cousin), so he can probably hang around long enough to be traded for an overpriced MLB pitcher prone to choking in September.
Not to many OFs who can carry the 'prospect' status
F-Mart, Nick Evans, Cesar Puello, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Javier Rodriguez, and fellow Standford alumn from last years draft Sean Ratliff. Congrats to your cousin btw.
RHP Daniel Webb...
…drafted by the Blue Jays in the 18th round.
If you remember Webb he was a top HS pitcher in last year’s draft (top 50 overall prospect) who had a strong commitment to Kentucky which dropped him to the 12th round….he didn’t end up signing and then failed to qualify at Kentucky and was forced into going to JUCO. He had a pretty shitty year in JUCO but the talent is still there, should be interesting to see if the Jays can get him signed but I’d assume he’s going to be a tough sign.
Cubs
I’m okay with the draft so far. I didn’t like the Jackson pick, didn’t hate it. It was okay. LeMahieu I sorta expected, but lukewarm on that unless more pop starts showing. The Kirk pick I liked. People can say overdraft, but lefty power arms have value. I liked a lot of the day 2 gambles, ranging from Raley to Erickson and so forth. What I especially liked were some gambles on upside. This draft wouldn’t work for every system, but for a Cubs organization that is in a win now mode and has a bunch of decent guys, but few high level chips, I don’t mind the upside gambles, particularly with some positional assets as the Cubs pitching from AA down to XST looks better than most probably realize (not at the 2003 levels, but it’s closer than been acknowledged). With the shape of the organization, I’d rather “miss” big than go with, say, a decent, but safer guy.
A bit disappointed that we didn’t pick up more power bats that feel better, but after the early rounds, the quality of the power bats drops.
Austin Maddox
Did anyone draft him, I cant find where he went on the MLB draft database
"And we'll see you tomoorrow night!" Jack Buck
Nope. Gotta figure the Gators are glad to hear that. Can’t imagine anyone will offer enough on day three to get him to bypass Florida.
