biggest movers + or -

Looking to get your opinions on the 5 biggers movers up or down since we did the community list.  Doesn't have to be guys that were on the list, but could be fun to compare.

For guys that have seen stocks rise, I'll go with 2 guys I've been pushing since the start

Brett Lawrie (113 community list)

Sean West (147 community list)

I'll also give props to 2 guys who were not on  many lists to start the season

Clayton Richard (although, he, like West, may not be a prospect at the end of the year.)

Brad Lincoln (anyone hear about how his stuff is, BTW)

The last guy who's stock is rising in a different catagory is Mike Stanton.  This dude may be the best prospect in baseball at the end of the year.  Desmond Jennings also falls in this category.

As for falling,   Skipworth seems to be struggling, as well as Niese, Marte, Elbert and Ceda (injury?)

SO who are your top 5?  Extra credit for guys who came out of nowhere.

Jennings

Could be considered a top 10 at this point. The guy is fire!

by BigBadBossman on Jun 1, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

for sure

Dominic Brown is probably top 15 for me.

they’re of the same ilk. I think Brown has more power potential though. Jennings aka DEEZY has the wheelz.

Michael Taylor

is a big riser to me.

For me

among the names not mentioned:

rising:
Montero
Wallace
Villalona
Holland

Dropped:
Alvarez

For me

Wallace has outperformed some the other names above him on the list while doing it at higher levels, imo.

by MightyMoose on Jun 1, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i guess

but he hasn’t been THAT good. he was good (not great) on AA, mediocre at best so far in AAA. i wouldn’t move him from where he began the year, IMO.

Defense

I think Wallace has only made 2 or 3 errors at 3rd base this season. Being able to keep his potential .300, 25 HR bat at 3rd base increases his value greatly.

Why Holland?

How much higher can he go? He made #40 in BA’s list, and was higher in the community list

AnVil with an absolute bomb last night

Avg. is up to, I think, .313… HR #8 and his OPS is at .832. Not bad for an 18 year old in A+.

Elbert

How is his stock falling? He has been pretty damn good when he’s started. Most of his struggles have came when the Dodgers have used him as a reliever.

As a starter in AA: 7GS 36.1IP 1.98ERA 1.24WHIP 44K 14BB 3HR

The only negative is that he’s only averaging around 5 innings per start.

For the Mets, Fernando Martinez and Josh Thole.

Vitters

I forget where the community list put him, but he’s got to be rising a bit. Jay Jackson has probably gone from off the boards to being on the board somewhere in the latter half of the top 100.

I like Vitters and he is doing well but...

Should there be concern with only 5 walks and 177 at bats?

by rookie319s on Jun 1, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's been discussed a lot

amongst Cubs fans, amongst minor league fans. My 2 cents is that, I’m not worried … yet. I admit, it’s disconcerting to see, but this isn’t a guy that doesn’t have an understanding of the zone. By all accounts, while he’s aggressive, which no one denies, he isn’t a wild hacker, for lack of a better term right now. He doesn’t strike out much. Short of it is, the reports from Boise and this year suggest a player that is mauling pitching that just isn’t up to snuff yet.

I think, while Vitters has moved up now in rankings as of now, we’ll get a clearer picture of the quality of his talent when he kicks it up to another level, probably Daytona/FSL.

From Players Currently On The List

I’ll add players currently off the list in a later post.

Feliz down, was at 9, probably now at 20 or so.
Alvarez down, was at 13 probably now in 20-30 range.
Hanson up, was at 23 (pre AFL), now easily top 5.
Angel Villalona up, overrated at the time on our list due to the SFG bias, now agrees with his spot at 25.
Max Ram down, overrated on list at 30 due to the Rangers bias, when I thought he should be around 75 at highest, now is there or lower.
Jarrod Parker up, was at 31 now top 15
Michael Stanton up, was at 33 now top 3.
Jesus Montero up, was at 34 now top 10.
Carlos Santana up, was at 39 now top 10
Fernando Martinez up, was at 40 now top 15 but soon to graduate
Logan Morrison down, was at 38 but now down due to injury
Freddie Freeman up, was at 46, I thought was underrated, now 20-30
Carlos Triunfel down, was at 51 but now down due to injury

Ugh, lots of work and I’m lazy, I’ll simplify this from here on, but I’ll answer any personal questions about my rankings.

Arietta Up
Main Down
Flores Down
Jennings WAY Up
Aumont Down
Salome Down
McGee Down
Martin Perez WAY Up, 15-30 range
Simmons overrated and down
Skipworth Down
Daryl Jones Way Up, 30-50 range
Ethan Martin WAY up, probably 30-40 now
Lawrie Way up, probably 50-60
Michael Taylor and Dominic Brown both top 30, Along with Drabek
Latos Way Up
Rondon Way Up.

Rondon???

I do not get why he is Way Up.. he is an improved prospect but is he even in top 100 consideration at this point.. a very good start to the season and 20/21 in AA is well obviously good but still a ton of questions in my book.
I guess from (at least for me personally) totaly off the radar to on the radar is a big jump but get impression you are thinking he is a top 100 guy.

I really don't understand how he didn't make those lists coming into this year

But now especially, he’s a 21 year old with excellent stuff who has excelled at every level he’s seen. He strikes batters out, he has strong control – what, precisely, is the problem?

Flores & Marte

I know they’ve struggled in the Sally League so far but keep in mind they’re 17.

Were they really expected to perform well right now?

Flores is holding his own against competition way older. I don’t think you can knock him down for his performance right now.

Mets

I wouldn’t be too rough on Flores, but he was over rated.

Actual quote from BA prospect handbook:

“He’ll open open 2009 at low Class A Savannah as a 17-year old, and with the way the Mets challenge their top prospects, he could find himself as high as Double-A by his 18th birthday in August.”

Obviously he’s not going to be in AA by August. When expectations are set that high, yes they need to be lowered a bit when he doesn’t meet them.

My take on Mets:

B+ Mejia – up, way up. FB 92-96 touching 97-98, plus pitch, very good command. CU 87-88, above average, good command, movement. CB 79-80 – above average, improved but still spotty command.
B+ Martinez – He was already highly ranked, so not up too much. He’s doing what he was supposed to.
B+ Holt – up. The development of his secondary pitches moves him into top 100. CU average, curve shows plus potential, but inconsistent command
B Flores – down a bit, but still tremendous hitting potential. Really belongs at 3B or 1B.
B- Reese Havens – won’t move up yet, but I really like him, he was very impressive earlier in the season.
B- Ruben Tejada – has moved up to this spot. Great skills for young age, but previously doubts about his eventual ceiling kept him lower. His offensive surge over the last 6 weeks at AA suggests more upside than expected. Not superstar tools though, ceiling may still be more like Ryan Theriot.
B- Jefry Marte – not really much a change here. But this ranking is pretty aggressive, almost entirely on potential. Some will have him down based on really poor defense. Could he end up at 1B?
C+ Jon Niese – Down. He was over rated in the top 100. Now he’s more around 150. Still, not as bad as his performance either, the Mets apparently had him make some adjustments in ST and he’s been struggling with new release points. He’ll get it sorted out.
C+ Kirk Nieuwenhuis – Up. The tools and performance so far are beginning to even suggest Hunter Pence type potential. But he’ll need to keep performing over a larger sample and raise the average some to earn a ranking worthy of that projection.
C+ Ike Davis – up a bit, considering how poorly he hit last year. Numbers are good so far, 3rd in FSL in XBH. But projection looks pretty average for 1B. Enough untapped power still there though to rank ahead of Thole.
C+ Josh Thole – Up. Nice numbers in AA, but with his lack of power still projects to maybe a .740-.760 OPS in MLB, with average at best defense. Still looks like a good platoon guy (yes I know he hits lefties – I just think he’ll split time with a better defender).
C+ Dillon Gee – about the same, maybe up a bit. Holding his own in AAA despite aggressive promotion after only 4 games in AA. Ranks amongst league leaders (mostly good prospects) in swinging strikes and strikeouts swinging, despite CU only plus pitch.

Cody Johnson should be up.

Lars just has not looked good this year at all. Not sure if anyone saw the comment in KG’s latest chat, but one scout referred to Lars as “stiff and unathletic – the kind of guy that turns 40 when he is 26.” Just one guy’s opinion, but definitely not flattering at all.

On the plus side for Sox fans, Casey Kelly has looked tremendous. If Ethan Martin deserves to be in the top 40, then Kelly deserves to be at least that high as well. The kid has been outstanding thus far.

Agree overall, but...

I think it’s a little early to call Dee Gordon top 50. I definitely think he’s moved way up, but that can be true without making him top 50. At the very least, he needs to maintain this progress all year to be top 50, in my opinion.

Agreed

I was going where I expect them to be by the end of the year. Baseball America was recently quoted as saying his upside was similar to Jimmy Rollins!!!

Question

how is Dee Gordon a Top 50 and Ruben Tejada is not when Tejada is 1 year and 5 months younger and playing 2 levels higher with similar stats (minus the steal amounts but similar success rate) and he plays great defense? I just don’t comprehend how that works out.

Huge Giants fan, love this guy, but he’s really started to struggle in AA. K’s are too high, power hasn’t really shown itself. I am also a Bruin so I’m a total homer, but I think it’s gonna take a little more time with this guy. Rooting hard for him tho.

Thomas Neal is raking in SJ. He’s hitting for good power and average and also taking walks. He still strikes out some and has limited OF range, but he is having a breakout campaign so far.

of course, I’m totally biased, though I’d like to see what other people think about him.

neal was a person who I predicted to have a breakout year. physically people say he is just as imposing as villalona and has light tower power. He also can take a walk and is still only 20. With what he’s doing so far (.320 BA, .410 OBP, .962 OPS, 8 hrs) I think he can easily be justified as a top 100 pick and is possibly the Giants top OF prospect (over kieschnik and rafael rodriguez).

Neal and Kieschnick

Been down to a few games at Muni this year. Both have looked very impressive. Neal particularly, as the power looked very real. He homered opposite field, which in San Jose is no easy task. Rooting hard for both of them, would love to see what they do at the next level.

fernando martinez

F-mart was mentioned earlier in this thread. i wasn’t particularly in favor of his call-up, still, he seems to be holding his own with the big club, and would put him in an overall top 10 if there was a do-over. Aside from excellent DWL numbers and very good (excellent, considering ARL) AAA numbers, he went hitless in his first 3 major league games. But in his last 6 games (including one of those 3, but the 3rd game was just an out he made as a pinch hitter) he’s at .300/.364/.450. with 2 walks and 1 K. extremely small sample size and ‘not counting’ his first two games can always turn into one of those ‘on nights with a full moon facing a LHer, so-and-so is a stud’ arbitrary things. Still, bottom-line is over a 5-game stretch he’s handling major league pitching and doesn’t seem overwhelmed. That’s just a tidbit, but an impressive tidbit.

What about...

And where do these guys rank?
Troy Patton, Casey Kelly, Jennry Mejia, Derek Norris.
Where would you slot some of the new draft guys,:
Matzek, Zach Wheeler, Jacob Turner, Ackley, and Leake?

Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson

by gore51 on Jun 7, 2009 11:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmm

Patton – Fringe Top 100 probably . . .really knows how to pitch but didn’t have enough stuff to fool guys in AAA or the majors when he was with Houston, his current peripherals in AA suggest more of the same on the way. Still a potential ML starter in the back of the rotation though. Kelly (assuming he’s a RHP) is probably in the 40-55 range off the top of my head. Great athlete, nice repertoire, wonder a little about how high his ceiling is. Mejia = pure helium . . .he’s got to be a top 40 prospect at this point, doesn’t he? Solid peripherals, great fastball, very young. He’s not Deolis Guerra certainly! Norris . . .don’t have a good handle on right now, so won’t answer just yet.

I’ll predict Ackley ends up inside the top 20 for a lot of people who like numbers, BA maybe a little lower but inside the top 30. Leake will be divisive, could see people having him anywhere from top 45 to fringe top 100. The preps . . .pick your poison really. I’d have it in the order of Matzek/Turner/Wheeler at this point, I think, with the first two being at least top 55 or so and then Wheeler significantly lower than that but probably within the top 100 still.

-MaxRam down: was overrated here, but there is definitely something to the thought that the WBC and Venezuela’s handling of him and blatant lying to the Rangers have hurt him out of the gate
-Beltre down: still getting by on age and toolshed reputation. Not walking, not hitting, not hitting for power, K’ing a lot.
-Martin Perez way up: He is ridiculous
-Boscan UP: he may never be a huge favorite of prospect lovers b.c. he doesn’t have the jaw dropping stuff, but the kid is flat out pitching his butt off.
-Smoak will be up: hurt right now, but was showing why he was a steal and he will be right around the top of the lists heading into 2010 when he could very well open the season on the big league roster
-Feliz same: Still working on the walks, but has not been as bad as some people would have you believe
-Borbon same or down: better walk rates, no power
-Beavan same: Velocity is slowly coming back, still has great GB rates and BB rates and doing it in the Cal League
-Holland will graduate: Shown brilliant flashes, needs to refine offspeed stuff, will be big part of pen and/or rotation down the stretch
-Teagarden will graduate: stuck behind Salty, he has shown his defensive reputation is deserved and has started to hit after a really slow start, adjusting to not playing everyday

Some possibilities:
-Kasey Kiker: still walking too many, but not getting hit and solid K rate. Showing his skills after getting out of the pitching death sentence that is the Cal League
-Wilmer Font: Walks? Yes. Ks? Yes. Age? 19. Potential? Wow.
-Most of the rest of the Pitching Staff at Hickory as well

What's Jaff Decker got to do to get some love?

He missed the first month of the season, so he’s just now showing up among qualified league leaders. He tops in the Midwest League in OBP and OPS and is way down in third for SLG and he’s a few months younger than Vitters. I know the positional difference matters, but he’s now played 90 professional games and has been on base in half of his total plate appearances while posting a IsoP >200. Those are pretty crazy numbers!

And speaking of Padres guys getting no love

With tonight’s start in AA, Mat Latos has now given up three runs in 48 innings across two levels this year in his first healthy performance as a pro. 49K/11BB, a well-above avg if not plus fastball, emerging slider, big frame… seems like someone whose name should have at least come up in this conversation.

From Ask BA... Pre Gibson Forearm injury
I counted 14 draftees from the 2008 draft class on BA’s Top 100 Prospects list this spring. If they saw any pro playing time in 2008, their playing time was negligible and their stats were fairly irrelevant. So for the most part, what we had seen from them on Top 100 Day was about the same as what we had seen on Draft Day. While most of us know that the 2008 class was above and beyond anything we’ll see in the near future, how many 2009 draftees do you think would have a shot at making the Top 100 right now if they were eligible?

      Nathan Ferria
      Richmond, R.I.

Nathan makes a good point. With most of the top talents in the draft waiting until the Aug. 15 deadline to sign, they usually don’t get a chance to do much in their first pro summer. Thus when we’re evaluating them as prospects, it’s mostly based on what they did as amateurs.

Last year’s draft was unusually strong in terms of position players, making this year’s thin crop of hitters look thin by comparison. But as I wrote in a recent column Premium, there’s talent in every draft. This one may not produce 10 players who claim one of the first 40 spots in the next Top 100 like the 2008 draft did, but it should produce close to the same number of Top 100 Prospects.

San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg is already the favorite to rank No. 1 on next year’s Top 100. Assuming they sign, there are two more college players (North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Missouri righthander Kyle Gibson), two independent league righthanders (Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers) and five high schoolers (outfielder Donavan Tate, lefthanders Tyler Matzek and Matthew Purke and righthanders Jacob Turner and Zack Wheeler) who are all but locks to make the list.

That’s 10 draftees from 2009, and I was trying to be conservative. North Carolina righthander Alex White, Texas high school righty Shelby Miller and Southern California shortstop Grant Green also have a good chance to make the list. There also will be a couple of lower first-rounders or sandwich picks—maybe Florida prep third baseman Bobby Borchering—who have strong debuts that will put them in position to crack the Top 100.
