6/1 MILB Thread
As the calendar turns to June, here are some starting pitchers to keep an eye on as the day and night progress:
Radhames Liz, Kyle Kendrick, Omar Poveda AAA debut, Jon Niese (3-2-1-0-3 in progress), Will Inman, Ricky Nolasco AAA (who would have seen him in AAA after the season he had last year?), Zach Stewart, Evan Anundsen, Jeremy Bleich, Jenrry Mejia, Dexter Carter, Randall Delgado, Matt Moore, Ross Seaton, Alexader Perez (in progress, 1st), Wilfredo Boscan.
And maybe some others with several TBDs.
Post away.

fantasy question
I’d rather not make a full new post about it —
would you rather have
Strasburg or picks 5, 7 (in the upcoming draft) and a top 50 hitting prospect (morrison, anvil, etc)
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...
by Metty5 on Jun 1, 2009 12:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
depends
on how the other two roster spots would be filled if you have Stras. If they are decent prospects, then I would take Stras, but if they are major league roster flotsam, I’d prefer Morrison and two other players. Less risky, and the pitcher you could get at 5 or 7 should still be an outstanding prospect. But I love Morrison, so that’s a big reason to take that side of the coin in my opinion.

5 and 7
its just like the First Year Player draft. So I could take Matzek and Green, or Gibson and Crow etc. etc.

right
I would rather have Morrison, Crow and Green, as an example, then just Strasburg. I’d rather fill three spots with potential All-stars then go with the one guy. (I’m not calling Crow and Green potential all-stars, rather that at those picks you are hoping they turn out to be very good).

I'd rather have Strasburg
He’s as close as they come to MLB ready, and if you are interested in dealing him I think you could fetch a higher price tag of MLB talent (with less risk associated) then trading him for other prospects that have less certainty.
Just my two cents.

I guess I'm gonna look at it like...
Strasburg Ceiling 6 WAR player
3 other top prospects will be in that ball park or higher

Jake McGee minor setback
Left-handed pitcher Jake McGee’s return from Tommy John surgery has been pushed back a month due to forearm tightness.
McGee said in spring training that his rehab schedule ran through the end of May. Now, it runs through June 26.

Memphis beats I-Cubs 6-2
Only 3 games on the docket today for the Cubs (unless you want to count DSL).
Mitch Atkins – 4 ip, 10 h, 6 runs, 2 K’s.
James Russell – 3 shutout, 4 hits, 1 bb, 1 K
Jeff Stevens – 1 ip, E.
Steve Clevenger – 1/4, E.
Sam Fuld – 3/5.
Nate Spears – 2/5, 1 R.
Doug Deeds – 2/5.
2cents: Atkins was the Cubs “6th starter” entering the year, but he’s struggled a bit. Still a possible end of the rotation/middle relief guy down the line. James Russell was just bumped to Iowa. He struggled as a starter in Tennessee, has settled down in the pen. Some thought he was a pen arm to begin with (out of the draft that is), and he may be a guy to watch if the Cubs need a lefty. Spears had a solid year last year in AA, but had struggled in AAA up until recently.

Other Notes So Far
Robinson Chirinos is continuing his insane hot streak with two more HRs today. He’s old for the FSL, but between the two grand slams yesterday and today’s HRs, he’s making a case for a promotion in a hurry.
Searle had a decent outing, going 5.2 scoreless, giving up 9 hits and striking out 1.
Starlin Castro has another walk, but not much else.
Hung Wen Chen got slapped around in Tennessee with the Smokies down 8-1 right now.
Tony Thomas’ slump continues with an 0/3 at the moment.
Colvin has a double and a walk in his first start for Tennessee.
Bonus baby 3B Joel Altagracia had a double, a stolen base, and an error for DSL Cubs 2. SS Carlos Henry is still hitless.
Decidedly eh day.

I'm an Idiot
But can you explain to me what I am looking at? I’m way behind…
by Dfarth on Jun 1, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's looking down at the plate.
at the horizontal axis is home plate, while the top of the graph is about 10 feet in front of the pitchers mound.
what’s impressive about this graph is the angle at which the fastballs are coming. he’s 6’7" and he peaks at 95 MPH. at the angle at which he’s throwing these FBs, he should be unhittable against LHBs.
though, i would say that if he wants to have prolonged success, he needs to start throwing his changeup and slider a lot more often.

I'm not sure either...
But comparing this chart to the one posted in yesterday’s minor league post, it appears that Miller’s stuff doesn’t have much break, so it looks straight. The other chart had clear curves, some sharper than others, but all were more pronounced than anything here.
I don’t know, but it seemed that all these pitches were on a pretty predictable path, unlike the other day where there were pronounced breaks.

hmm
are we sure this guy has anything left to learn in the minors, other than how to hit mediocre hitting?

I’m sure he will be up again and hopefully given a chance to succeed once the Indians fire their whole staff for incompetence.

Carlos Gonzalez
Call me impatient, cause he only has 1ab so far tonight. But it’s a 3R HR (10), just raking in AAA. I know the Rockies don’t don’t look like contenders much, but how long cn you keep him down with the big club is struggling to hit.

Rustic, Holt, Mejia, and maybe Calero should see some time AA.

You think Calero?
I struggle to see how his command would allow such a promotion..
by METSMETSMETS on Jun 2, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Calero
He’s put up decent numbers and he has decent stuff for a lefty.
I put prefaced his name with a maybe earlier, because he is a step below some of the other guys on the St. Lucie staff but I still have high hopes for him.

Yonder Alonso
goes 3-4 in debut in AA
It wont be long ’til people are talking about him just like they are Justin Smoak. He weathered a somewhat slow start in the rainy, early season in the FSL to hit oveer .260 in May and leaves the league 3rd in RBI and 5th in OPS
by casejud on Jun 2, 2009 4:28 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I've always seen
him on par w/ Smoak as far as hitters go – don’t think I’m alone there either.

BA
a lot (if not all) of the BA writers say Smoak is the better bat there
by miraclemets on Jun 2, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
also
most people on this site say this as well. i admit it is hard to argue against it like id like to (Alonso is a favorite of mine) with Smoak doing well in AA and Alonso struggling a tab early in A+
there were a few mitigating cercumstances though
- sample size: guys just have hot and cold starts
- it was an especially rainy early season in the FSL
- The Texas League is ideal for hitting
- The FSL isnt a great league for hitting anyways
In either case Im happy to see Yonder in AA to really see how they stack up. I think its splitting hairs as to whose better really. I think both are going to be real good big league hitters

Anundsen and Carter
Evan Anundsen – 7ip, 3h, 0er, 1bb, 11k
Dexter Carter – 7ip, 7h, 3er, 3bb, 7k
Pretty good performances by these two, especially Anundsen. Maybe his no-hitter wasnt a fluke.
Any thoughts on these 2?

It happened
I believe, when both were in the SAL in 2007. I read an article on it comparing the 2.
