Chris Coghlan: The Time is NOW

Wow, just one day ago, the people of this blog asked when is it going to be Chris Coghlan time.

That time is NOW!  Let's start 'calling up' other players too!  Perhaps we will have the same effect on all players.  Who is next?  Hanson?  Gamel?  What player do you think will be next?  Make your bets now.

Right now though, it's:

COGHLAN TIME

Behold MLB, Chris Coghlan, may his time be fruitful!

with a walk and a run scored. Of course, he did strike out in his other two at bats.

I hope they keep him in the #2 spot

Who cares

He has no shot at being a star. At best he’ll be Brian Roberts, and I emphasize AT BEST. The only real significance of this is that Dan Uggla can start packing his arbitration-eligible bags right now.

You're mostly right....

I don’t think he will be a “star” either. But who cares? Really? Who cares about a possible above average major league regular? Who cares about a 2B with plus defensive and who walks more than he strikes out while batting 290+? Sure he may not be a star…. but great teams don’t have 25 stars on them. They have a lot of just good, solid players, which is what Coghlan looks like he may be. It’s that kind of player who can make the difference between a championship and just an average team.

Or could your team not use a good defensive 2B who hits 300 with 10HR and steals 30 bases? Don’t succumb to the ESPN highlight reel believe that only homers win baseball games. Players like Coghlan are the ones that true fans can root for on their team.

agreed Box. I think Coghlan might be able to reach 15 HR even. His speed is pretty nice from most of the scouting reports, and versatility to play 3B too. I am from Detroit and root like hell for Inge. I see Coghlan as being one of those guys who isn’t a star, but easy to pull and become a fan fave. Not to mention less hiccups and heart attacks than Uggla gives out.

uh...

“He has no shot at being a star. At best he’ll be Brian Roberts…”

I find that nearly contradictory. I don’t see how you can knock a guy like Brian Roberts, as a 2nd baseman. He’s a top 5 guy with well above average speed and good plate discipline. That’s just my opinion though…

Fantasy baseball..

Just to let you know…we are not discussing Yahoo fantasy baseball where theres a star at every position…anyway…ANY MLB team would be happy to have a Brian Roberts type guy at 2B

by NYSOX on May 9, 2009 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Roberts was more valuable than Miguel Cabrera last year.

By WARP. 64th best player in all of baseball. That’s good.

at best He'll be Brian Roberts?

ahhh, last time I checked Brian Roberts is just about a perennial All- Star in a weak 2B American League.

Roberts is no slouch, If Coughlan is 90% of what Brian Roberts is 5-6 years from now I’d say thats a rather big success for Chris.

I think

you mean a strong 2B AL? Pedroia, Kinsler, Roberts, etc.

UH

If you don’t think Brian Roberts is a star, you don’t understand baseball. He is one of the top 10 best platrs in the American League and a true star. If Coghlan can approach Roberts’ play he’ll be a star himself.

Uh

Top 10 player in the AL? Even leaving out pitchers, I’m pretty sure he’s not in my top 10. Which of these 9 players do you cut to put him in your top 10 positional players in the AL. And just for clarification I’m not saying all these guys are better, but they all have arguments for being just as good.

Mauer
Rodriguez
Sizemore
Granderson
Cabrera
Teixeira
Longoria
Pedroia
Martinez
Kinsler
Upton (although he has sucked so far this year)
Youkilis
Hamilton
Pena
Markakis
Ad. Jones
Hill
Beltre

Sure

Well, I admit I didnt go through and count out how many players I consider better than Brian Roberts – lol. The fact that he is a bonafied star remains though.

Just as a quick, and effective, way to look at this the VORP rating on BP are good. In 2008 Roberts ranked as the 24th most valuable position player in the game last year and 10th among AL players. He was behind only A-Rod, Pedroia, Sizemore, Hamilton, Milton Bradley, Huff, Kinsler, and Carlos Quentin.

In 2007 he ranked 31st and 14th in the Al

Injured in 2006

In 2005 he ranked 13th and 8th in the AL

So far this year he is 67th so probably in the 30’s among AL players. He is only off to that as a START to this season however he remains more valuable IMO than many players off to hot starts this season – Napoli, Bartlett, Lind?, Hairston, Cameron, Scutaro, Callaspo, Freddy Sanchez – lol. Its early.

It may be stretch to put him in top ten in AL, although he has done it in 2005 and last season, but he is pretty solidly a consistent top 15 AL player and a true All-Star.

Those rankings include position value but not specific fielding value of the individual and I think Roberts is an above average fielder as well.

Really? …. I would be careful saying ‘no shot’.

10 games

I think I read that is their standard.

i hope he stays at 2nd base

i think this guy will be a star. hes an all around player.. can play multi positions, has speed, and hits the ball damn well. watch out hes coming! and lots of fans love rookies!! Look at Longoria! And they need to get rid of Uggla or put Uggla at 3rd and Coghlan at 2nd.
