Ollie on the DL, Niese to get start

I don't know what to think of this move.  Niese hasn't had a brilliant start to his AAA career.  I know a bit has bit written about extreme bad luck so far (someone posted that his FIP is something like 3.65) and the start is going to be against the Pirates of all teams.... but it really does seem like setting up a young pitcher for failure.

In my perfect world, Niese doesn't even SNIFF the bigs until after the all star break.  His command isn't good enough, IMO, to survive on his weak fastball in the bigs yet.

My preference

I’d rather see Redding, personally.

Redding

I’m assuming Redding isn’t ready yet. I’d guess Niese makes one and only one start and then he and Redding switch places.

Yeah

I think he’s expected to have a few more starts. Its another reason to go with Niese, since this will more than likely be a 1-2 start stint, they won’t have to expose anyone to waivers when Redding and his guaranteed contract are ready, Niese just gets optioned back to Triple-A until he and Ollie eventually outpitch Redding and Livan ::fingers crossed, knock on wood::.

Redding pitched last night

So he’s not available for Friday. Figueroa pitched Tuesday so same deal. I really don’t mind it. Niese has been better than his ERA indicates. 15.5 LD% and .412 BABIP? Something’s amiss here. He’s also got a solid K and GB rate, and if you look at two of his “bad” starts, he actually went through the lineup once perfectly and then got knocked around a bit by a combination of bad defense and bad luck at least as much as bad pitching.

Also

Apparently the Pirates have struggled a bit against LHP, so there’s that too.

What?

Not actually being the next Sandy Koufax isn’t a legit medical concern?

Niese

will be fine. He’s command is average and he doesn’t allow a lot of HR. I was impressed with his stuff outside of his start against the Brewers who mash lefties. With a good D and a little more velocity, Niese can be pretty legit. Especially against the Pirates before July.
