Steven Strasburg Update
I didn't see it mentioned in the minor league daily update so I figured I'd start up a new thread. In his first start in the NCAA regionals, he flat out dominated ACC champion Virginia, ranked #7 in the country. He allowed only 8 hits and 2 ER in 7 IP while walking none and striking out 15. He gave up a HR in the first and threw two wild pitches that helped Virginia score another run in the second. He got stuck with the loss as the Aztecs failed to score until the 8th and the bullpen let the game get out of reach in the bottom half of the inning. It'll probably be his last start until the Draft because their next game is against UC Irvine who's ranked #1 by many. Here's his final stats for the year :
109 IP, 65 H, 17 R, 16 ER, 19 BB, 195 K, 4 HR, 11 WP, 4 HBP
1.32 ERA, 0.771 WHIP, 1.57 BB/9IP, 16.1 K/9IP, 0.33 HR/9IP, 10.3 K:BB
If there was any doubt in anyone's mind that he should be the first pick in the draft, there shouldn't be anymore. There is nobody close to his talent level and his production backs it up. It'd be like passing on Justin Upton to draft Jay Bruce.

Yes, obvious #1 but the real question is how much money is washington willing to give?
Personally, anything over $6 or maybe $7 is beyond stupid. All it does is raise the asking price for every player…and is it a coincedence that bor-ASS represents about 4 guys in the top 10? He wants to squeeze the very last cent instead of making sure his client is signed and playing THIS year.
And for those crowing about his stellar numbers, remember, he is pitching against a group of players in which the number who don’t make it to the majors is higher than 99%.

okay but he has still put up better number than guys who have gone on to dominant the big leagues and obviously every other player in the draft. dont fault him for the competition he is facing.

Right, and numbers aside...
It isn’t like there are a bunch of pitchers with the same stuff as Strasburg and he is just getting more hype from scouts because he has better numbers. If all the college pitchers were in front of scouts throwing baseballs through a tire hanging from a tree, Strasburg would still be the hyped favorite since he sits upper 90’s and has a killer breaking pitch with good command to boot.

Were Strasburg to now get a $20 million guarantee, he’d have to be only a ~4-5 WAR player in his entire career to earn his money. The range of scenarios where he doesn’t earn that is fairly low (injury early in his career that ends his career is really the only one). I mean, he flat out dominated college ball this; yeah, few of the players he faces are even legitimate draft prospects much less major leagues, but we don’t discount minor league stats because most of the opposing batters aren’t major league quality.

Give him 50 million.
Last year’s #1 overall pick got a little over 6 million to sign. Strasburg is a once-a-decade type player, therefore he deserves the compensation of ten #1 overalls. Thus, him taking only 50 is pretty generous. See how awesome he is?
It’s all just math, baby.
(Yes, I stole that idea. It was the only funny thing in a fake interview I read.)

Really?
So then you should discount every high school player, right?

Only 8 hits?
Seems like a decent amount to me…

Virginia
Averaged 5 hits and 2 walks per game this year so they got about the same number of baserunners. Plus he held them to 2 runs vs. their average of 4 per game. Oh, and they averaged only 3.3 Ks per game. Or about 1/5 of the total times SS struck them out.

OT: No real good place to put this
and I don’t follow the college baseball all that closely, at least not enough to justify a thread
but UVA is such a fundamentally solid team. Watching them beat UC-Irvine, they are just flat out solid and Hultzen looks like a kid that will be highly valued in a couple years.
And how about 21 innings for Texas vs.Boston College?

Wild Pitches
that’s an odd number for someone whose walks are so low.
It makes me think that Strasburg doesn’t have the control that people say he does. Maybe the walks are so low because of intimidation factor?
Interesting to see how his command will pan out in his pro career.

Or maybe...
his Wild Pitchers are high as an intimidation factor. Maybe his catcher tells him to hit the mascot once in awhile to scare hitters.
