Phillies Rotation Situation

Brett Myers is seeking out a second opinion on his hip, which forced him to exit his last start, and will, more than likely, force him to miss at least one surgery. The initial diagnosis seemed to indicate that surgery would be required to repair his labrum, which would obviously cost him a bulk of the remainder of the season, if not all of it. With the Phillies most currently hyped (maybe?) pitching prospects, Drabek and Knapp, both in A ball, how do you think they would replace Myers in the rotation? Feel free to discuss trade possibilities as well.

If they were smart...

they’d talk to Pedro Martinez and Odalis Perez. Either one of them would likely give better production than the pitchers listed above, maybe with the exception of Carrasco.

Carrasco

is 0-6 with a 5.40 ERA in AAA … if he was in the majors it would be even worse im pretty sure both of them could do better than that

Carrasco

Also sports a 58:15 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 55 innings, and has been the victim of some bad luck on balls in play (.374 BABIP). I’d tend to think that his 3.36 FIP is probably a better indicator of his value this year than his won-loss record. And with the time it would take Pedro or Perez to get MLB ready at this point, I doubt very much that they would be an improvement over Carrasco in the short term.

That being said, I’m in favor of handing the ball to Bastardo, who’s simply pitching better right now, or even Vance Worley (3.22 FIP, 53.5% GB in Double-A). Carrasco needs some seasoning before he’s mentally ready for the majors IMO.

i would inquire w/ oakland again

on josh outman or dana eveland + a reliever like wuertz/casilla/gray/springer/blevins etc
2 needs filled in 1 deal and it wouldnt cost a top prospect

josh outman the guy the phillies traded for joe blanton…. highly doubt they would trade for him back less than a year later

Trade

If they want to compete this year, the only option is trade. They have the arms to do it. I’m surprised I haven’t heard any Peavy to the Phillies talk. Penny I guess would be an option that wouldn’t cost much.

If they don’t want to compete this year, then they use filler for a month and then bring up Carrasco or any other rookie pitcher they want.

+1

I don’t know about the “want to compete” aspect, but I’d suggest Peavy too. The have, IMO, better arms then the Chi Sox. Money could be an issue because I’m fairly certain that the Phils didn’t want to add any more payroll than what they have already increased.

If I’m the Padres I would ask for Drabek, Bastardo, and Ryan Madson.

Would Peavy really want to go to Philly and pitch in that little stadium? Considering all the deals he’s already nixed, I kinda think this one would get turned down as well.

absolutely

with Philly being a big media market and the small stadium that will really hurt his stats, plus philly not being the greatest family city in the world i doubt he would accept a trade there… he seems to want a nice quiet city with a pitchers park that his family will be able to settle down in

by Pelferized on May 30, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

That'd be an excellent trade for Philadelphia

Though I’m not sure why the Pads would want Madson, and the deal is a bit underwhelming, since I’m not sold on Bastardo.

In fairness, it’s not much different than the offer from the ChiSox they accepted. I thought that offer was pretty weak too.

Correct me if I'm wrong

But aren’t Howard, Hamels, and Victorino, possibly others, still subject to arbitration? So the Phils adding more than $15 million a year in salary is kind of doubtful?

by Fanon on May 30, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Howard

Signed a 4-year contract this offseason, which only bought out his arbitration years.

Hmm

Maybe a package involving either Dom Brown or Mike Taylor would be a better fit.

Penny

I would trade for Penny. He’s been solid for the Sox, mostly QS’s with one or two bad outings. What would it take to get him?

by The Colonel on May 29, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

There was an article from Gordon Edes that talked about Penny for Jason Donald. Seems like a steal, to me, for the Red Sox, but what do I know.

Side Note

What do people think of JA Happ’s potential?

Now raise your goblet of rock. It's a toast to those who rock!

by Dewey Finn on May 29, 2009 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Solid #4/5 starter.

He throws strikes, and he’s lefthanded with a deceptive delivery. His slider is fringe-average, so he’ll have his bad outings, but as a cost-controlled back-end starter for a few years, you could do a lot worse.

by PhillyFriar on May 30, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

In admittedly tiny sample sizes, his FIP in the majors has been 4, and his FIP in almost a full season last year in AAA was in the mid 3s. I see no reason why Happ can’t consistently show an ERA around 4 in the majors – in Blanton’s entire career, he’s only twice had an ERA below that, and only once had an FIP below 4, and he’s not considered a #4/5 starter. I think Happ has the potential to be better than him.

I voted for Bastardo

Please

Give Chan Ho 15 or so starts.

Happ +1

You would definitely have to give him a look first. Carrasco’s struggled this year and I think if he had a bad first experience in the show, he’s a guy that could be ruined as he really doesn’t respond well to failure. Either Happ or Carrasco though, unless Ryan Madson wants to give it a shot, but I don’t think they would need a trade (until Jamie Moyer’s arm falls off, which shouldn’t be long).

Already In Rotation Currently.

A noob or n00b is someone that lacks intellegance or common sense, most people think that noob is a word used only in the online gaming world, but in reality it is becoming an ever popular word with teenage society.

a noob could be simply a level 100 running round shouting ‘’WTF DO I GO!?’’ or someone calling someone else a noob and then getting hit with a brick, anyone can call anyone a noob, but normally they are noobs themselves

Bastardo

Has gotten the call. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on a very, very short leash, though. The Phillies have a lot of other options in house if this is the route they choose to go.
