I'm in love with him right now...
I drafted him in one of my three fantasy leagues this year. He is my “third” starter after Johan and Lincecum lol.

^^^Good job

Thanks.
What’s funny is that I had Scott Kazmir as my #4 starter. I have since dropped him, but that would have made an awesome Top 4 if he could have done what he is capable of. I was the 9th pick in the 10 team league, so I grabbed Johan #9 overall and snagged Lincecum with #12 overall. I got Greinke in the 9th round and Kazmir in the 10th. Typical 5×5 roto league, and of the 50 possible pitching points, I have 41.5 of them. Only category I am hurting in with pitching is WHIP, where I only have 6 points.

we have the same top 3
my 4th is Felix Hernandez. Then Ubaldo.
We play a modified stats, inc. format, points league, and I froze santana and lincecum. Greinke was a 4th rounder.

akward timing on this thread
Way to pick the day of a start in which he raised his ERA by giving up a run in 9 innings.

Dude's unreal
I don’t think he’s a huge fan of letting his teammates pitch
Also, he did record the win today against Detroit.

Intellectually I know that he's going to eventually give up homers and runs
But watching his games, I sometimes wonder.

Is there a need for all those CG's...
What’s the point? Some of those werent even close IIRC.
by alskor on May 27, 2009 2:10 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i think tonight's margin (5) was actually the largest
that i can remember anyways.
doesn’t really concern me though. should it? i dunno know. he’s still hitting 96 in the 9th inning of these games and command isn’t suffering one bit. and the pitch counts aren’t ridiculous either (as opposed to Lincecum throwing near 140 last year), i think he went 115 tonight which was a season high.

CG's
He could of possibly came out after the 8th tonight, but the rest the pitch count hasn’t been high so why not let him get a CG? His highest before had been 111 twice I believe, so going 116 as long as it doesn’t constantly happen, I’m not too worried. Most of the year he has been just in the 90’s to low 100’s, not taking a big toll on him IMO>

I dont think its a big deal or anything
Im just saying… it seems whenever a pitcher goes on a run like this the manager tries to see how hard he can lean on him. If it were me I would be much more conservative with him.
As to the games being close, On Apr 24th they beat Detroit 6-1 and he pitched a CG. Only 108 pitches. Last game out, same opponent, same score, CG. 116 pitches. Neither is a big deal, but still… seems like either would have been a decent time to give him a little breather.
by alskor on May 27, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't disagree with your point
I’m just not sure it’s a real big deal because he’s doing it on relatively low pitch counts. If Trey was running him out there for 125 or 130 pitches in 5-run games, then I’d be 100% with you. But 108 pitches or 116 pitches occasionally should be fine.
Also, it’s possible Greinke is giving the bullpen needed rest by going out that one extra inning. Soria is hurt anyway right now, isn’t he? Might just be a case of them saving the bullpen for games its really needed. (I pulled that paragraph out of my ass. Total speculation. Facts could disprove the hypothesis)
by thejd44 on May 27, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah Soria is out for a little while longer
that might even be part of the reason trey is leaning on Zack a little more right now. he hasn’t found another really reliable reliever yet, and he can’t fall back on Soria shutting the door if the game were to get close.

I don't know...
I’m inclined to agree with alskor, but I’m a neophyte in this area. Sentimentally, I find it highly enjoyable to watch Greinke go start to finish. However, I wonder if pragmatically speaking it’s advisable. Is there any empirical data that supports the notion that after a certain amount of pitches in a given year, a pitcher’s performance starts to suffer?
by FastBennyF on May 27, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would agree...
if the pitch counts were high or the Royals had a better pen. But Farnie has blown enough games for them that leaving Greinke in to finish the game and still stay under 117 pitches in every start seems like a smart idea. I am sure Greinke appreciates it, the fans love it, and it makes things easier on the coach. Right now, I see no one in the AL who will truly compete against Greinke for the Cy Young. Halladay may be the best bet, but with Halladay’s best attribute being how deep he goes into games, Greinke racking up the CGs will keep that argument moot.

You got me. I totally forgot about him, and he is one of my favorite current pitchers. Drafted him out of college in my dynasty league and I just read the article at Fangraphs that was posted a couple days ago. As Bill Cosby said “Nothing good can ever be blogged after midnight.” … or something like that lol.

Apparently I'm blind.
I guess I could have looked at his career number, but I swore both this years and his career numbers were really similar. I looked it up yesterday (probably before he pitched), but he didn’t throw enough pitches to make it jump that much. Guess I was wrong.
But still, 107 is reasonable for just about any start, but very reasonable for a pitcher that’s averaging 7.5 innings a game.

So Lets See
Top 5 pitchers in baseball. It’s gotten really close.
Johan, Greinke, Verlander, Lincecum, Billingsley?
Looking at my league’s player rater they’re five of the top six, with Halladay being in there. Who would have thought that Wandy would be number seven.

cough cough
Halladay, large omission. Others to consider include
Haren?
Wandy? [is terrific the past combined year]
Cain? (just because 1. he’s close to Lincecum this year, and 2. I’m a homer.
King Felix?
Also, I don’t think Billingsley should be up there, the 30 BB haven’t hurt him too much so far, but I can’t see that trend continuing.

Yeah, Halladay is a HUGE omission
Can you imagine the numbers Halladay would put up in the AL Central (Greinke) or NL West (Lincecum)? I’m not discrediting either guy, but Halladay is absolutely phenomenal

Refutation
I suppose I was thinking differently. I was thinking more along the lines of over the next few years. Yes, I’ll put Halladay up there now, at #5, with Billingsley #6. Honestly, I see Billingsley being top 3 Cy Young perenially. A 200 Inning 200 KO 3 ERA monster. Also, Verlander should definitely be top 5. He had an absolutely dreadful defense and luck the first few starts of this season, plus he regained his velocity from last season. I noticed a trend in which his velocity actually went UP as the game went on and never tapered off. He’s been absolutely amazing.
And about your suggestions, there’s definitely a huge dropoff after this top six.

and I agree then for the next few years. But if that is the case, then King Feliz/Cain definitely belong on the list (or at least in talks)

Bills
Let’s see him cut that walk rate damn near in half before we start talking about him as a perennial Cy contender. I like to compare Billingsley’s numbers with Jorge De La Rosa’s. It’s surprising how close they are in K/9, BB/9, GB%, and velocity. And De La Rosa’s left-handed.
I’d love to see the two trade home parks and see how the opinions on them change.

Billingsley Redux
Billingsley is also only 24, turning 25 later this season, and drastically improving every year. His FIP is just about the same as his ERA around 2.82. De La Rosa also has not had much success. Even in Colorado, this year and last year have been the first years of him doing anything in the majors, and he sucked in other places too.

Billingsley's FIP
is so low because he’s having insane luck on HR/F. FIP doesn’t even look at that. That’s why Bills’ xFIP is 3.85, while De La Rosa’s is 3.99. Also, there’s no definitive difference in the development stage a 24/25-year-old pitcher is in compared to a 27-year-old pitcher. Pitchers don’t develop the same way hitters do.
This is not to say Billingsley is a bad pitcher. He’s a very good pitcher. The point is the two pitchers are quite similar, except for one has a top-prospect background and is in pitcher heaven, while the other is a “failed” prospect playing in a pitcher’s nightmare. Bills is probably not as good as most people think he is, while De La Rosa is better than his reputation.
by PissedMick on May 28, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Doesn’t Billz home park have something to do with his low HR/FB rate? BTW, I think CB is a much better fantasy pitcher than DLR because you don’t lose half his starts because of his home park. I have both on my roster but will only start DLR on the road.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
by WayneCampbell08 on May 29, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If we're talking strictly about fantasy...
then of course those things matter. I believe the discussion was about whether Billingsley was a Cy-level player, and how he compared as a pitcher to Jorge De La Rosa. Having a good home park doesn’t make a pitcher better even if his numbers get a boost.
But no, Bills’ home park is not responsible for a 1% HR/F. That’s just ridiculous.
by PissedMick on May 29, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm
Looks like he doesn’t give up many HRs in general. 06-5.4%, 07-7.4%, 08-5.4%
His career average is 5.5% so that’s only about 4 1/2 HR which isn’t THAT far from the single home run. Er, Koyie Hill just homered and there have only been 2-3 other fly balls in the game so now his average is up to 2.2%. Maybe he’s one of the exceptions to that 10% rule …
His hits allowed is down this year, but the BABIP & LD% is within his career norms. Damn, looks like Joe left him in one inning too long.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
by WayneCampbell08 on May 29, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right.
It’s more likely he’s a historically unique player than a guy who’s had good luck in a pitcher’s park. I stand corrected.
