Peavy traded to the White Sox for pitching prospects?

Pending Peavy's approval, MLBTradeRumors.com and Rotoworld.com report.  It looks like the return for Peavy involves Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, and two more pitching prospects.  At the moment it looks like Gordon Beckham is not part of the deal.

I don't really get why the White Sox would do this, especially as their top pitchers from last year have been struggling and it seemed pretty clear that they were in rebuilding mode.  Well it's still not a done deal, Peavy has expressed a strong preference for playing in the NL, and former teammate Scott Linebrink said there's a 50-50 chance he accepts.

This news is going to wreak havoc in AL-only fantasy leagues.  Please feel free to post any updates on the Peavy situation.

In my league

The guy who drafted Clayton Richard as a minor leaguer would receive Peavy if the deal is as reported. The Poreda owner would get a comp pick in our draft, since he hasnt pitched in the majors.

Rather than argue about which prospect is better we only give returns from the NL for players who have appeared in an MLB game.

thats exactly why they are doing it lol..rebuilding in chicago dosent go over real well.

plus, what are they giving up?? richard is a 5th SP, and many people think Poreda is a bull pen arm. the white sox dont have a prospect i can think ofthat makes this a bad deal for them.

There aren't four players in the Sox organization I want if I'm San Diego

unless Beckham is one of them.

I’d take Danks, Quentin, Poreda, and Flowers, but no way Quentin or Danks are included.

Can anybody name two White Sox prospects who, in addition to Richard and Poreda, would make this a good deal for San Diego? I can’t find those guys.

Peavy will likely veto this anyway.

I personally don't see how it could be 4 pitching prospects

I doubt they want guys like Egbert or Broadway… The White Sox do have Brandon Allen who is intriguing but not a fit for San Diego… I feel like Beckham would almost have to be one the guys dealt.

They have a couple guys who are intriguing for sure

But compare the Haren deal to this proposal, or even the Santana deal (the scenario there is a bit more comparable) and the Padres are getting hosed. Hell, at this point it’s looking like the A’s got more out of trading Swisher to the Sox than the Padres will if they move Peavy there.

by thejd44 on May 21, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a problem yet

I didnt mean it was a great fit, just meant if Im San Diego he’s somebody I probably ask for/consider.

Dan Hudson and Dexter Carter

are two guys who, if included, could swing this toward the ranks of a decent deal. They’re certainly better than guys like Egbert or Broadway.

Who else could it be? There are no other interesting pitching prospects for the White Sox, if even Hudson and Carter are.

If someone had posted this trade proposal on an internet message board

They would be laughed out of the room. I cannot believe the Padres would make such a silly deal.

Rumored Cubs deals

We’re those deals weak too? They were Vitters-less IIRC.

he wants his 22 mil option picked up

re:

I know you meant that as a negative, but honestly, I don’t think it’s nearly the negative you are hoping for.

That said, I wanted to take a moment here to say that, while I’m not a Peavy fan, I’m not a huge fan of the Petco critique of Peavy. He’s had dominant away seasons before. The 2 poor away years were 2006 and 2008, and they were poor in context to what expectations were for in regards to Peavy. If memory serves me correct right now, I believe Peavy had injuries both of those years, beyond your regular game or two off for nicks and stuff. Could be wrong, but I’m not a big fan of critiquing him as Petco influenced when he has had years where he’s been dominant on the road.

even though i expect peavy to veto

what a lousy trade agrees to be padres

4 pitchers i’m assuming at least poreda/broadway/richardl…there is really no urgency to trade peavy especially since he’s been struggling

heck, i dont think that offer is better than what A’s got for blanton. cardenas, outman, spencer

Stuggling his way to...

leading the leagues in IP, Ks, and throwing a complete game three hitter last time out. I don’t know what the Sox are thinking not much of an upgrade over Bartolo Colon

Blanton's salary isn't even close to Peavy's

In today’s economy, teams trading long-term big salaries are not going to be able to demand as much in return.

Plus Blanton didn't have a no trade clause, limiting the trade destinations

I don’t get why people don’t understand this fact. Peavy has a no trade clause. He can effectively narrow down the list of destinations to a tiny subset of teams (he says NL teams in the midwest). Thus, the tiny subset of teams he would allow a trade to can offer FAR less than what would be offered in a free market.

Look at the current economy (both nationwide and in San Diego) and look at the the current competitive state of the Padres. The Padres average attendance so far this year is 24,655. In 2008 it was 29,970. In 2007 it was 34,445. 10,000 fewer people are coming to games compared to two years ago. They’ve had to lower the average ticket price at Petco to $20.01 this year, down 27% from last year (as per bizofbaseball.com). That’s looking at a gross ticket revenue loss approaching $22 million dollars compared to 2 years ago. That’s also not accounting for differences in concessions sales, merchandising, and advertising/corporate sponsorship revenue.

The Padres are 9.5 games back in arguably the weakest division in baseball, and they are sporting a -44 run differential to date (only the Nats and Orioles are worse). It’s safe to say that the Padres will not contend this year, and given that most of their minor league talent with the potential to be impact players are at High-A or lower levels, they’re probably not going to contend anytime soon based on what’s currently in their organization. I don’t see their attendance spiking upward soon, with or without Peavy.

I think that if Peavy would’ve consented to the deal, getting Poreda, Richard, two more low upside arms, and saving tens of millions of dollars to pump into player development and/or multiple new free agent contracts at today’s deflated prices and/or just allowing the organization to stay afloat would be a pretty smart decision. If Peavy strains his shoulder tonight, they’re stuck.

I heard it was

Poreda and Richard plus two PTBNL’s, which could possibly be Beckham and the other Danks (I think they’d have to be PTBNL’s because they were drafted last year). I still think Peavy veto’s this deal.

Great point. I haven’t heard the deal other than Poreda but if it is PTBNL, Beckham is most certainly in the deal. The Padres aren’t able to acquire him until after one year after he is drafted.

That Peavy has declined the deal.

Great.

Would have ended up as the worst trade in franchise history. Well second worst after Ozzie Smith for Garry Templeton.

Thank you Jake Peavy

from White Sox fans. He would be the 3rd best pitcher on the Sox behind Buehrle and Danks and not at all worth that exhorbitant contract – not to mention the 4 players included as well.

Again, thank you so much , Jake. I can sleep better now.

by NLaloosh on May 21, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

oh come on

3rd best? Really? Look, his ERA is a bit high, sure, but c’mon no one really judges on ERA anymore. That 10 K rate is awesome. The walk rate in the 2’s is solid. Opponents only hitting .221 off him. I’ll leave fip, xfip and all that aside – just based on that, I’d say, even if we account for a league difference, that Peavy would still be at least the 2nd best arm, and imo, the best arm on that staff. If anyone has struggled a bit this year, it’s Danks. Buehrle’s had some luck this year, but he’s his usual self I guess, and depending on how you view that, it’s either a good or an eh thing.

Whether or not he’s worth the money – I’ll leave that alone, as you have to factor in health and so forth. But … talent wise, this year? I’ll take Peavy over those 2, and I’m not even a Peavy fan. The bashing on Peavy gets a bit ridiculous. Is he the best pitcher in the game? No, but he’s not this medicore middle of the road pitcher that many want to make it sound like. As noted above, he’s had solid seasons away, and iirc, the years he struggled away were injury years.

by toonsterwu on May 21, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Get real

Maybe you like Buehrle’s “consistency” better, sure, but Danks?

Peavy is overrated in a sense. His home park helps him a lot. Still, he’s pretty damn good regardless. You never have to worry about a Gavin Floyd-style meldown (5 ip, 11h, 8 earnies) with Peavy on the hill.

John Danks? The guy with the 3.32 ERA (4.14 FIP) striking out 8.6 per 9 in 195 IP last year? That John Danks?

Danks is a better pitcher than Beuhrle… not sure what youre talking about there… but I agree Peavy is better than both. Still, in the AL, in Chicago, Im not sold that Peavy would be all that much better than Danks.

by alskor on May 22, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

The mets

really would be the perfect landing spot for him – pitcher’s park, in the NL, winning team, and he’d actually be the number 2 guy.

Deal makes too much sense for the mets for Minaya to even make a pitch, though.
